Fairy tales sparked a wave of controversy(争论) when they were first introduced into England in the early nineteenth century: they were not immediately welcomed as they had been in Germany and France. Fairy tales were considered too entertaining for children, because children

s literature was

expected to be didactic(教诲的) and moral—not entertaining.

As the notions about children changed during the century, however, so did ideas about literature for children. Fairy tales gradually became more accepted, and eventually a branch of wholly entertaining childrenflourish.

Critics have shown that even as fantasy gained acceptance as literature for children, it was considered unacceptable for adults to enjoy the genre. Critics remark that with very few exceptions fairy tales were written for children, featuring children as heroes.

Critics have remarked that many popular authors used fairy tales to comment on the Industrial Revolution, to create ideal alternatives to unsatisfactory conditions of the real world, and to contrast Christianity with the materialism of English society. These authors wanted to restore enjoyment and recreation, inspire compassion for the working class, and offer an escape from reality by reversing the known and accepted rules of the real world.

Victorian fantasy literature began as a way to combine education and entertainment for children, but by the end of the century it had developed into a way to challenge a child

s

s literature began to

imagination and offer a reprieve(缓解) from the everyday world

of English life. In their quest to capture the world of childhood innocence as paradise, works by fairy tale authors led to the study of the imagination, and served as a precursor to twentieth-century science fiction.

The traditional tent cities at festivals such as Glastonbury may never be the same again. In a victory of green business that is certain to appeal to environmentally-aware music-lovers, a design student is to receive financial support to produce ecofriendly tents made of cardboard that can be recycled after the bands and the crowds have gone home.

Major festivals such as Glastonbury throw away some 10,000

abandoned tents at the end of events each year. For his final year project at the University of the West of England, James Dunlop came up with a material that can be recycled. And to cope with the British summer, the cardboard has been made waterproof.

Taking inspiration from a Japanese architect, who has used cardboard to make big buildings including churches, Mr Dunlop used cardboard material for his tents, which he called Myhabs. The design won an award at the annual New Designers Exhibition after Mr Dunlop graduated from his product design degree and he decided to try to turn it into a business. To raise money for the idea, he toured the citycompanies which

found new business and found a supporter in the finance group Mint. He introduced his idea to four of Mint

s directors and

s private

won their support. Mint has committed around £500,000 to Myhabs and taken a share of 30 percent in Mr Dunlop

s business.

The first Myhabs should be tested at festivals this summer, before being marketed fully next year.

Mr Dunlop said that the design, which accommodates two people, could have other uses, such as for disaster relief and housing for the London Olympics.

For music events, the cardboard houses will be ordered online and put up at the sites by the Myhabs team before the festivalgoers arrive and removed by the company afterwards. They can be personalized and the company will offer reductions on the expense if people agree to sell exterior(外部的) advertising space.

The biggest festivals attract tens of thousands of participants, with Glastonbury having some 150,000 each year. Altogether there are around 100 annual music festivals where people camp in the UK. The events are becoming increasingly environmentally conscious.

free loan from Mint s administration

C. in partnership with a finance group D. with the help of a Japanese architect

B. most performances at British festivals are given in the open air

C. the cardboard tents produced by Mr Dunlop can be usertailored

D. cardboard tents can be easily put up and removed by users 9. The passage is mainly concerned with . A. an attempt at developing recyclable tents B. some efforts at making full use of cardboards C. an unusual success of a graduation project

Ⅳ. 1. fix/keep your eyes on 2. appealing to3. On arriving 4. distributed to5. No doubt

Ⅴ. 1. 解析: 选A。take revenge 复仇。

3. 解析: 选A。 故选A。

lead to导致;make up编造,化妆;turn back回来。

cast about for sth.

7. 解析: 选A。 set out 出发,动身,陈述,宣布;set off 开始,使爆炸,引起或激发;set about 开始做某事;set on 攻击,怂恿。

Ⅵ. 1. 解析: 选B。根据文章第一段最后的“Fairy tales gradually became more accepted, and eventually a branch of wholly entertaining childrenB项正确。

3. 解析: 选D。根据文章第三段的“These authors wanted to restore enjoyment and recreation, inspire compassion for the working class, and offer an escape from reality by reversing the known and accepted rules of the real world”可知,应选D项。 4. 解析: 选B。根据文章最后一段的“..., but by the end of the

s literature began to flourish”可知

century it had developed into a way to challenge a childimagination ...”

friendly

A项获得Mint的无息贷款,显然错;Mr Dunlop寻求的是the City

s private

9.解析:选A。
