What a Little Love Means to a Little One
For too many, the damage begins early in life. Four out of 10
infants(婴儿)born in the United States do not form a strong
bond(关系)with either parent, and they will pay for that the rest
of their lives.
New research from Princeton University confirms what other researchers have already found: The number of babies born into families that are too poorly equipped to give them a fair chance of having a successful life is extremely big.
That finding is supported by many other research projects, including a study from the University of Rochester showing that nearly one-third of U.S. parents don't know what to expect from their newborns, or how to help them grow and learn and get along with others. Babies, as others have pointed out, don't come with an owner's manual.
The basic problem, according to the Princeton study, is 40 percent of infants in the U.S. live in fear or distrust of their parents, and that will turn into aggressiveness(侵犯), defiance(挑衅)and hyperactivity(多动)as they grow into adults.
Of that number, 25 percent don't bond with their parents because the parents aren't responding to their needs. And a tragic 15 percent find their parents so troubling that they will avoid them whenever possible.
高中考试试卷
That will not necessarily result in a lifetime of violence, but it will make living a successful life much more difficult.
“They can overcome it,” sociologist Sophie Moullin of Princeton, lead author of that study, said in a telephone interview. “It's not a make or break situation, but they might find it harder to control their be havior.”
Moullin, along with coauthors from Columbia University and the University of Bristol in England, analyzed more than 100 research projects, to reach their conclusions.
Many factors contribute to the problem, including poverty, ignorance(无知), and stress among parents who are so busy with their own problems that a new child is sometimes more than they can handle.
Yet strong bonds, the researchers say, are amazingly simple to achieve.

Heal the wounds
This is an excerpt(节选) of US President Barack
Obama’s speech following the school shooting in Newtown,
Connecticut on Dec 14.
…. The majority of those who died today were children.
They were beautiful little kids between the ages of 5 and 10
years old. They had their entire lives ahead of them—
birthdays, graduations, weddings, kids of their own. Among the fallen were also teachers—men and women who devoted their lives to helping our children fulfill(实现)their dreams.
So our hearts are broken today—for the parents and grandparents, sisters and brothers of these little children, and for the families of the adults who were lost. Our hearts are broken for the parents of the survivors as well, for as blessed as they are to have their children home tonight, they know that their chil dren’s innocence has been torn away from them too early, and there are no words that will ease their pain.
As a country, we have been through this too many times. Whether it’s an elementary school in Newtown, or a shopping mall in Oregon, or a temple in Wisconsin, or a movie theater in Aurora, or a street corner in Chicago—these neighborhoods are our neighborhoods, and these children are our children. And we’re going to have to come together and take meaningful action to prevent more tragedies(悲剧)like this from happening, regardless of the politics. This evening, Michelle and I will do what I know every parent in America will do, which is hug our children a little tighter and we’ll tell them that we love them, and we’ll remind each other how deeply we love o ne another. But there are families in Connecticut who cannot do that tonight. And they need all of us right now. In the hard days to come, that community needs us to be at our best as Americans. And I will do everything in my power as President to help.
Because while nothing can fill the space of a lost child or loved one, all of us can extend a hand to those in need—to remind them that we are there for them, that we are praying for them, that the love they felt for those they lost endures(延续)not just in their memories but also in ours….

Living abroad to study can certainly be an interesting experience but is that alone a good enough reason for spending years far away from home? To make the experience truly worthwhile, there has to be a goal behind the decision to study abroad. This may be a wish to perfect language skills in a foreign language environment, or a clever move in your career development. You must also consider the costs, not just of living and studying abroad, but of applying. Most universities now charge application fees for international students.
If after considering these points you are sure that you want to apply to study abroad, your next step is to choose the right program of studies. Research your choices and select carefully. You must do your homework well. Most universities have information online but you can also email and ask them to send you more details. You can find a lot of information on school ranking from education websites. But read carefully. Different universities emphasize different strengths. Don’t just think about the university’s reputation (名声); look for the most suitable for your goals.
Next, you must deal with a large pile of paperwork. This involves filling in application form,
高中考试试卷
preparing your school records, and getting reference letters. Reading the instructions and requirements of the universities carefully is of great importance. Sadly, many fine applicants get kicked out in the first round, simply because they don’t follow the application procedure properly.
Money is another important consideration. Some scholarships are provided by governments, others by schools and colleges. This information, again, can be found on the Internet. If you find a scholarship that is suitable for you, follow the application procedure carefully; the earlier you apply, the better your chance of getting it.
59. According to the article, studying abroad is truly worthwhile because ______.
A. it is an interesting experience
B. it is fun to travel around the world
C. it is an opportunity to develop your career
D. all your friends are doing so
60. A school ranking list tells you ______.
A. how much the courses cost
B. the names of all the professors
C. how good the school is compared to others
D. where the school is located
61. What are the three basic steps when you apply?
A. Buy an airplane ticket, read the instructions and requirements, and study.
B. Prepare reference letters, prepare school records, and fill in the application form.
C. Prepare school records, do paperwork, and work hard.
D. Write a reference letter, do paperwork, and study.
62. The underlined phrase “get kicked out in the first round” in Paragraph 3 means ______.
A. fail to get to the next round
B. lose money in the first round
C. get accepted in the next round
D. get kicked by a professor

The Tories would allow children to go to school for ten hours a day and on Saturday mornings to improve the performance of poorer pupils and help working parents. Schools spokesman Michael Gove declared plans yesterday to give disadvantaged children more classroom time to help them catch up. Longer school days could also be popular with parents who struggle to fit 3pm school finishing times around work, he said.
Mr. Gove gave out the success of a U.S. plan where teenagers from poor backgrounds attend school from 7.30 am to 5pm. “I believe that ha ving children in school for longer, particularly if

they come from disadvantaged backgrounds can help them to achieve more in academy, ” he told the annual conference of the Association of Teachers and Lecturers in Manchester. He pointed out that it was up to schools alone to decide whether to open longer, or at weekends. But he was greeted with laughter from delegates (代表)when he said the plan would really work only with the active support of teachers.
ATL general secretary, Dr Mary Bousted, said, “The last thing we need to be doing at the present time is increasing teachers’ working hours. Teachers already work the mo st unpaid overtime of any public sector profession. If we want Saturday schools then we need more teachers doing the extra hours, not the same teachers working longer and becoming tired.”
Meanwhile Mr Gove's idea is likely to alarm those concerned about the erosion(侵蚀)of family time. Margaret Morrissey, founder of the lobby group Parents Outloud, said, “What we should be doing is supporting these children within the school week.”
63. What’s the main idea of Paragraph 1?
A. The Tories required all students to stay longer at school.
B. Some parents didn’t support the arrangement.
C. A new plan was used to help the disabled children.
D. A plan was to meet some students’ and parents’ needs.
64. The successful example given by Mr. Gove suggests that having children in school for longer, can improve their___________.
A. studies
B. health
C. confidence
D. communication
65. According to the passage, which of the following is true?
A. Each school in that area has to open longer or work at weekends.
B. Pare nts who can’t pick up their children on time support the action.
C. According to Gove, the teachers there agree to longer school days.
D. The new plan will undoubtedly help poorer pupils catch up with others.

Friendship—Seven Tips on How to Make Friends
Friendship is a very important human relationship and everyone needs good friends. Friendship offers companionship, improves an individual self-worth and promotes good health. However making new friends comes easy for some people but for many of us the process is difficult and requires courage. Below are some helpful tips on how to make and keep friends.
Associate with others. The first step to making friends is associating with other people. Health clubs, places of worship and charities are some places where you can meet new people and build friendship. But attending these places is not enough. You will need to make yourself known by becoming an active member.
Be cheerful. A smile on the face is a sure way to attract new friends. No one wants to keep company with someone who constantly looks upset.
Start a conversation. Starting a conversation is the second most important step in making new friends. Do not wait to be spoken to;you can always start the conversation. Being able to make small talk is a very useful skill in relating with other people regardless of the environment or circumstance.
Stay in touch. For a friendship to grow you need to stay in touch. There are several ways of staying in touch with your friends and these include SMS, phone calls and online social networking sites.
Do things together. Choosing friends with common interest is important in establishing friendship as these interests would always bring you and your friend together and hanging out will always be a pleasant experience. The less you have in common with your friend the more likely the friendship will not grow.
Let it grow. It is a good thing to stay in touch but try not to choke your new friend with calls, messages or visits as this would likely wear him or her out and eventually they may not want to be your friend anymore. The best friendships are the ones that grow naturally.
Enjoy your friendship. The best way to enjoy your new friends is to allow them to be themselves. Try not to be critical (挑剔的) of them and try not to change them from who they are to what you want them to be.

make the best of the time for independent study, which can improve our ability to learn by ourselves. Finally, we are encouraged to finish homework alone.
At the same time, good habits of living are also good for our life. Healthy eating along with regular exercise is probably the only way to become fit. What is more, a good amount of sleep every night is also important for our health, for it makes us feel energetic and well prepared for the day to come.
Good habits have a positive effect on our life. Once a good habit is formed, it will give us power to control ourselves and get rid of bad habits. If we insist on behaving ourselves properly, we are sure to live a successful life.

W: I told him that I didn't know. He seemed very busy, as managers always are. Are you OK?
M: I'm sorry I didn't call you this morning. I've had a cold since Saturday. I haven't eaten much these days, and it has made me feel really weak. But I'll probably be there tomorrow.

W: All right. We'll go on a business trip next week. And don't worry. You should go see a doctor, Steve.
M: Thanks, but I'm getting better now.
W: Take care, then. Bye.
M: Byebye, Sue.
Text 9
M: Hey, Lucy, I have a question I'd like to ask you.
W: Yes, go ahead.
M: Well, don't laugh... But, I met this really nice woman through an online music group. I need some advice. You see, Claudia.
W: OK. So it's Claudia.
M: Yeah, yeah. She invited me to spend two weeks in Germany. She is planning on introducing me to her parents. What should you do when you greet someone for the first time in Germany?
W: Well, it depends upon your relationship with the person, now speaking of your girlfriend Claudia.
M: Hey, I didn't say she was my girlfriend.
W: Oh, OK, OK. Now if you are meeting someone for the first time, like Claudia's parents, you should make sure you arrive on time.
M: OK, so arrive on time. Err, what about common greetings?
W: Well, Germans often shake hands and they use the person's family name unless they are really close friends.
M: OK, what about with Claudia?
W: Err, you can call her Claudia, shake hands, and why don't you take her some flowers?
Text 10
Most Americans enjoy eating fast food. Five years ago, I liked eating fast food, too. I weighed 170 pounds then. One day, I read a report about Alice Waters, and I decided to change how I eat. Alice Waters opened her French restaurant in Berkeley, California when she was 27 years old. Today it is considered one of the finest restaurants not only in the US but also around the world. Unlike other restaurants, her restaurant encourages people to eat healthy food. She buys

fresh fruits and vegetables from local farms and prepares them in a healthy way. Alice Waters even started a movem ent called “slow food”, to try and encourage people to prepare food in the more traditional, slow manner—and avoid fast food.
Her story greatly inspired me and I realized that eating healthily is very important. Since then, I've tried my best to avoid fast food. Now I seldom eat out, and when I do go out, I order only healthy food. Now I weigh just 130 pounds.
