“That was quite an interesting conversation you were having last night,” my roommate, Natasha, said as she handed me my morning coffee. What conversaion? Had I forgotten the event in a case of drunken amnesia(失忆)? Natasha’s naughty grin told me that, if I had, my memory would be embarrassing. It turns out that the conversation was with my pillow and I had forgotten it not because I was drunk, but because I was asleep. My name is “Molly and I am a sleep talker. Roommates and significant others beware.

taoti.tl100.com 你的首选资源互助社区

I’m not alone. According to a 2004 poll by the National Sleep Foundation, approximately 5 percent of adults and more than10 percent of children converse in their sleep on a regular basis. Many more have occasional series of sleep talking, or somniloquy(说梦话). The study showed no correleation(关联) between sleep talking and gender, but did suggest that the habit may run in families.

Data on the subject is elusive, however, since most people who do talk in their sleep don’t remember it afterward. They only realize that they are somniloquists if people around them alert them to the fact. So if you live alone, you may be a sleep talker and not even know it.

Sleep talking is usually nothing more than a harmless phenomenon with no greater consequence than distrubing your partner’s shut-eye. No one is exactly sure what causes somniloquy, but experts believe it to be an evolutionary response to stress. Stress can cause an interruption in sleep patterns and lead to REM sleep behavior disorder(RBD), symptoms of which are sleep talking, night terrors, sleep walking, and sleep eating.

If your sleep talking is not associated with anything like bad dreams or unexplained weight gain, it is probably nothing. But if you experience any of these, you may want to consider reducing your levels of stress and seeking advice of a sleep specialist.

41. When Natasha talked with Molly about her conversation, she wanted to _________. A. complain that Molly doesn’t keep her promise

B. make a joke with Molly

C. remind Molly of the fact that Molly was a sleep talker D. help Molly to overcome her difficulty

42. What’s the main cause of somniloquy according to experts?

A. Alcohol B. Stress C. Gender D. Weight 43. Which of the following is NOT true according to the passage? A. Sleep talking is a common phenomenon in Molly’s nation.

B. According to the study, sleep talking doesn’t have anything with the gender. C. If you don’t suffer from weight gain, you can ignore sleep talking.

D. Anyone who has roommates or is an important person should care about sleep talking. 44. What’s the best title of the passage?

A. A Forgettable Conversation B. A Bad Dream, Sleep Talking C. A Sleep Problem D. An Introduction to Sleep Talking

Astronauts’ meals have come a long way from the freeze-dried powders and semi-liquid pastes(膏状食品) of decades ago. Now US scientists want to grow vegetables in mini-greenhouses on the moon.

Scientists say they are looking forward to a time when residents of future lunar or even Martian outposts(前哨) will be able to dine on fresh vegetables. Paragon Space Development Corporation has announced what it called the first step toward growing flowers and eventually food on the moon.

Paragon, which has cooperated with NASA in previous experiments on the Space Shuttle and the Internaional Space Station, calls it s “Lunar Oasis(月球绿洲)”.

There are basically two ways for Senior 3 students to go over their lessons. One is that the lessons are taught unit after unit according to the textbook. In this way, the students can lay a solid

foundation for their study, thus improving their ability. Another way is to do lots of exercises. Through exercises the students not only gain the knowledge but also learn how to solve the problem.

Personally, I prefer my classes to be taught through exercises, which offers me a chance to develop my ability. I think it is not knowledge but the ability that really matters in Senior 3.
