Bullying is surprisingly common among humans — happening not only on school playgrounds but also, in the workplace and even, among so-called friends. However, hearing that it may happen in the animal world is a little surprising, especially considering that bullies are none

other than the friendliest of all marine mammals-dolphins!

That according to a scientist Peter Wallerstein and director of El Segundo’s Marine Animal Rescue program can be the only reasonable explanation for a lonely dolphin that has been swimming around in circles in Southern California’s Bolsa Wetlands since Thursday, April 26th, 2012.

When they first found the marine mammal alone, the staff from Marine Animal Rescue program thought that it was just a dolphin which fall behind and tried to drive it off into the Pacific Ocean. However, as soon as it tried to swim away, it was greeted by two violent dolphins that began trashing violently in the water, forcing the 250-pound animal called “Bolsa Chica Bob” to come back into the wetlands.

Dennis Kelly, chairman of the Marine Science Department of Orange Coast College, disagrees. The dolphin expert who has been working with these wonderful animals for 34 years, believes that while dolphins sometimes get impatient and smack(拍打) each other with their tails, they do not bully one of their own.

He thinks that this aggressive behavior is similar to a time out and therefore, a short-term punishment for a dolphin that was probably not paying attention and falling behind, when the rest of the animals were trying to leave.

Whatever it is, the good news is that the bullied or punished dolphin is safe. There is plenty of fish to eat and its health seems fine. While experts are constantly keeping an eye on it, they are hoping that it will finally find the courage to venture out and join the rest of its group. They will however, plan on a rescue task if it becomes necessary. 21. From the first paragraph we can infer . A. there were few examples of bullying among animals B. humans seldom bully animals in the oceans C. dolphins are friendly to humans very much D. bullying happens in no other than playgrounds 22. What does the underlined word “that” refer to? A. Schools are where bullying usually happens. B. Bullying happens in the animal world C. Friends can sometimes bully each other

D. Dolphins are the friendliest of all marine mammals 23. What might be the most suitable title for the passage?

A. Do Animals Bully Each Other Too? B. Are Animals Punished for Their Behavior? C. Is a Dolphin Brave Enough to Go Back? D. Will People Be Kind to Animals?

Move over Harry Potter, summer is coming and it’s at this time of year that the real wizards come out to play.

Well, not wizards to be exact, but druids(德鲁伊教司), June 21 marks the beginning of Midsummer’s Day, a once important time in the old calendar, It is thought to be the longest day of the year. Many of the celebrations are focused around one point: Stonehenge(巨石阵)in Salisbury, England.

Stonehenge is believed to be an old sun dial(日晷), showing seasonal events according to pattern of the stones. On this special day each year, the public are allowed to stay the night at the monument and, for one day only, are allowed to go right up to the stones. It has become a bit of a family event.

If you’re one of the lucky few that can get in the space during this time, it is possible to see

some long forgotten parts of Celtic culture being revived. Druids—now part of a dead practice, are trying to be revived by modern members of the public. They hope to be present at Stonehenge on Midsummer’s Day, when the earth’s axis(轴)is pointing at the sun. From this they can gain an insight into the traditions of the first druids that may have been part of the monument’s construction.

The original druids were a group of wise men that knew the secrets of nature and “magic”. Today they call themselves Neo-Druids, and try to open the mysteries that their predecessors hid so well.

So on June 21, no matter what the weather is, people will be out to celebrate the coming of the sun and watch the traditional celebrations.

24. Which is NOT the reason why Harry Potter is mentioned at the beginning? A. To attract readers’ attention. B. To show real wizards.

C. To lead in the topic of the passage. D. To add a funny tone to the passage.

25. Exactly speaking, it’s that come(s) out to play on Midsummer’s Day. A. Harry Potter B. wizards C. druids D. the public

26. The underlined word ”revived” in the fourth paragraph probably means . A. brought…back to life B. looked for

C. created D. set free

27.Nowadays people come to Stonehenge on Midsummer’s Day to . A. observe its patterns and learn seasonal events

B. celebrate Midsummer’s Day and watch the traditional celebrations. C. stay the night at the monument

D. get the druids’ secrets of nature and magic

Visit the beach on a hot afternoon and you may not realize it, but someone—or rather something—is watching from above. If you stand in the right place, the silent watcher’s unseen spotlight will pass right over you, like the spotlight over you, like the spotlight of a police airplane flying overhead.

Scientists these days are worried about sea level. As Earth warms, the surface of the ocean is rising upward. This rise is happening partly because salt water increase a tiny bit as it warms.“Warmer water exactly is taller”, explains Josh Willis.

Sea level also is rising because warm temperatures have caused glaciers in Antarctica, Greenland and other usually cold places to melt more quickly. Glaciers are essentially rivers of ice, and their melting adds freshwater to the ocean. Antarctica and Greenland are together losing about 350 cubic kilometers of ice per year—enough meltwater to fill up 80,000 baseball stadiums. Spread over the world’s oceans, that meltwater alone raises sea level about 1 millimeter or so each year.

Scientists have long known that sea level changes over time. Paul Hearty, a geologist, has found stones covered in shells some 30 meters above sea level . Those high and dry shellfishes are several million years old. They serve as evidence that sea level was once much higher.

Sea level has risen and fallen with the ice ages, over hundreds of thousands of years. During past ice ages, oceans were lower because more water was tied up in glaciers on land. But between ice ages, sea level sometimes rose higher than it is today, as melting glaciers sweated their water into the ocean.

The big challenge for scientists has been how to measure changes to sea level throughout the past 50 to 100 years. Bruce Douglas, a retired scientist spent years working on this. During the 1980s and 1990s he measured sea level rise by studying records from tide gauges. Harbor operators have relied on these devices for more than 200 years to watch the water level in coastal areas in order to warn ships of running aground. But the gauges measured the level of the world’s oceans, which cover 360 million square kilometers, in only 20 or 30 places! 28.The second paragraph implies that .

A. water level is lower if it is frozen B. salt water is easier to become warm C. the surface of the ocean is reducing D. the ocean is becoming smaller in size. 29. From the third paragraph we know that . A. Antarctica has the largest amount of ice in the world B. the melting of glaciers causes sea-level to rise

C. ice from Greenland raises sea level about 1 millimeter. D.80,000 baseball stadiums are flooded by sea water. 30. During the ice ages oceans were lower because . A. more water was frozen into ice in the sea. B. glaciers provided more water into the ocean

C. more water was left on land as ice D. water couldn’t flow easily in cold weather. 31. Why did harbor operator record tide gauges?

A. To learn more about the changes of tides. B. To prevent the coastal areas being flooded.

C. To measure the level of the world’s oceans. D. To warn ships not to run aground.

President Obama will travel to Denmark to support Chicago’s bid for the 2016 Summer Olympics, projecting the highest-ever White House profile in appealing for the international event.

Valerie Jarrett, a senior adviser to the president, told the Associated Press Monday morning that Obama will leave Thursday and join his wife, Michelle, in Copenhagen, where they’ll make the pitch to the International Olympic Committee. Obama would be the first US president to actually appeal in person to the IOC for an Olympic event.

The IOC is meeting in Copenhagen to select a host city for the 2016 Summer Games. Chicago faces tough competition from Rio de Janeiro, Madrid and Tokyo.

The White House later formally announced the trip, saying that Obama and his wife “will both make presentations to the IOC during Friday’s meeting. They will discuss why Chicago is best to host the 2016 Summer Games, and how the United States is eager to bring the world together to celebrate the ideals of the Olympic movement.” The IOC is scheduled to decide the site on Friday.

Obama, who represented Illinois in the US Senate after serving in the Illinois Legislature, is a longtime supporter of Chicago’s bid. Michelle Obama is a native of the city and he considers it his

adopted hometown. Obama recently sent letters to selected IOC members promising a “spectacular Olympic experience for one and all.”

“President Obama and First Lady Michelle Obama symbolize the hope, opportunity and inspiration that makes Chicago great, and we are honored to have two of our city’s most accomplished residents leading our delegation in Copenhagen,” Mayor Richard M. Daley said in a statement. “Who is better to share with members of the IOC the commitment and enthusiasm Chicago for the Olympic and Paralympic Movement than the President and First Lady.”

But with heads of state representing Rio and Madrid already scheduled to attend the IOC meeting Friday, Chicago’s bid organizers had hoped Obama would make an in-person appeal.

Obama is also mobilizing his administration on behalf of Chicago’s bid. Senior adviser Jarrett, Education Secretary Arne Duncan and Transportation Secretary Ray LaHood, will also be joining the president and first lady in Copenhagen. All are from Illinois.

32. We can know that in order to succeed in bidding for a Summer Olympics .

A. Obama’s the only US president who’s appealed to the IOC directly B. Obama will travel to Copenhagen together with his wife

C. Obama will travel to Copenhagen together with Valerie Jarrett.

D. Obama will speak with his wife on the previous day to decide the city 33. The passage might NOT be adapted from .

A. sports news B. Olympic news C. a magazine D. a newspaper 34. What can be inferred from the passage?

A.No lead of state made a pitch for the bid for the Olympic Games before B. At least 3 leads of state will make a pitch for the bid for the 2016 Olympics C. The leads of state will attend the IOC meeting Friday with their wives.

D. The leads of state will make a pitch for their bidding city for the 2016 Olympics. 35.Which might be the title of the passage?

A. Obama Make Pitch for the 2016 Olympics Personally B. President Obama and First Lady Michelle

C. The IOC Decides the 2016 Olympic City on Friday D. How Chicago Bids for the 2016 Olympic Games. 第二节(共5小题;每小题2分,满分10 分)

We live in a sweet world. The average American kid consumes more than 20 teaspoons of sugar per day, and adults eat 50% more sugar today than they did in the 1970s. 36 But did we know it could be posionous.A team of researchers at the University of Utah used mice to conduct a study on the negative effects of sugar. 37 Sugar is found not only in sweets and candies, but also in many household items like pasta and crackers(面食和饼干).

38 Findings from this study reveal negative effects that are not as detectable as weight gain or heart problems. Sugar can contribute to long-term changes in the body that can affect developments and even shorten lives.

39 Some of the sugar we consume comes from foods we might expect—candy, soda, and cookies. But much of the sugar that we eat is hidden. Food companies add large amounts of sugar to items we may not classify as sweets. To help cut down on extra sugar consumption, nutrition experts suggest looking at the ingredients(配料) on food packages. Ingredients that end in sugar, such as sucrose and fructose(蔗糖和果糖), are sugars. 40 Cutting sugar out of the American diet altogether may be difficult. But making the effort to control our nation’s sugar cravings will provide for a truly sweeter future.
