―Oh!‖ my grandmother would say. ―Look at the time! There just aren’t enough hours in the day.‖ And then she would begin another chore (日常事务). My grandmother was a busy woman. She lived on a farm and had eight children. She was busy from dawn until dusk but she was always well-organized. She could accomplish (完成) in a day what most people couldn’t in a week.
Make friends with time.
My grandmother knew that time was important and that it shouldn’t be wasted. She knew that you shouldn’t put off until tomorrow the things you should do today. She knew that if you didn’t learn how to make friends with time, it would become your enemy.
Time is an arrow. Time is like an arrow: it begins in the past, travels through the present and it aims directly at the future. When we are young we don’t think much about that. If anything, we think time stands still or moves too slowly: ―Will the bell ever ring? Will this boring class ever end?‖ Of course, time does speed up when we’re trying to finish an exam: ― Five minutes left?! But I still have ten questions to answer!‖
Key to success.
Managing your time is an important part of being successful. And many business people think that being able to use their time well is the key to their success.
1
My grandmother wasn’t a business woman but she was just as successful in managing her time. In the fall she would plant flowers that would grow in the spring. In the summer she would preserve food that would be eaten in the winter. And during those long winter nights on the farm she would make sure her children worked hard at their studies. She was always busy.
1.What is the author’s grandmother like according to the whole passage EXCEPT______. A. well-organized B. successful in managing time C. stubborn D. busy
2. If you want to succeed in your study, you should______ according to thepassage. A. not make friends with time B. make sure you have time to sleep and eat C. manage your time well
D. put off until tomorrow the things you should do today

What does the author want to tell? A. Don’t let the grass grow under your feet. B. His grandmother is a successful woman. C. Why is time like an arrow. D. How to make good use of time.

On September 2, Nyad, at age 64, made history by becoming the first person to swim from Cuba to Florida without using a shark cage. It took her nearly 53 hours to complete the 103-mile swim.
―You’re never too old to chase your dream,‖ Nyad said shortly after finishing the journey. This was Nyad’s fifth attempt (尝试) to complete the swim across the Florida Strait between America and the Caribbean islands. She first tried in 1978, and then made three more attempts in 2011 and 2012. What finally helped her succeed? She had trained for years, lifting weights and sometimes swimming for days at a time. But even more important than that, experts say, was her mind.
―I think it was her belief in herself that she could do this,‖ Kathryn Olson, CEO of the Women’s Sports Foundation, told reporters.
But Nyad didn’t do it alone. She had a team of experts who helped her along the way. Other swimmers had made the trip before, swimming inside shark cages, which protected them as they moved through the waters of the Florida Strait. But Nyad did not want to use a cage. So to help protect her from sea creatures, Nyad wore a full-body ―jellyfish suit‖ and a protective mask. She had equipment that produced a faint electrical field around her to keep sharks away.
Still, Nyad faced many challenges. She fought against high winds. And she drank a lot of seawater, which caused her to vomit (呕吐) all the time.
For Nyad, it was all worth it to realize a lifelong dream.
―The journey was dangerous, but it has brought lots of satisfaction,‖ she wrote on her blog. ―I am so proud of my team, and… I am also very proud of myself.‖

A. A jellyfish suit! B. A long journey! C. A historic swim! D. A lifelong dream!

We try to give our children so much but sometimes forget to give them the greatest gift, the ability to feel grateful (感激的). Without that, we can never give them enough. Gratitude(感激) can be expressed for anything---the sight of beautiful clouds, our warm home, or a nice meal.
Many of our own parents tried to make us feel grateful by pointing out the hungry children in some far-off land. This often resulted in us offering to send those children the unpleasant clothes or ugly tennis shoes. Just have a look around us, we know how this happened. All around are material things that they (and we) are led to believe we must have—that we have a right to have.
The most important is simply being an example of being grateful for the things in our own lives. In my work as a school psychologist, a mother with a 9-year-old came to see me for help. We worked out a way to teach him to feel gratitude---but not to say how fortunate he was. She started by talking about what had gone on in her day that she was grateful for: a friend who praised her work or the quiet evening without too much washing. Then she asked him if anything good happened in his day. He got the idea, shared a few things, and it soon became a habit.
So along with all the things on the wish lists, we can add another one: gratitude. It might even help to start by letting our kids know that, regardless of(不管) their appearance, their scores, or their abilities, they are a source (来源) of gratitude in our lives.
12. According to the author, gratitude______. A. may come from everyday life B. should come first on the wish lists
5
C. is more important than kids’ scores D. must be taught by teachers in school 13. Paragraph 2 is mainly about_______. A. the situation of children in poor areas B. the skill of choosing and sending gifts C. the difference between right and wrong D. the reason for children’s feeling ungrateful
14. The story of the 9-year-old boy is mainly to show that_____. A. parents should teach their children to forget bad things in life B. parents should set an example to children to feel grateful C. parents should tell their children how lucky they are D. parents should praise their children quite often 15. In which part of a website can we probably find the text? A. News. B. Jobs. C. Family. D. Arts. 第二节(共5小题;每小题2分,满分10分)
