Trees are very useful to men in three important ways: they supply them with wood and other products; they give them shade; and they help to prevent drought and floods.

Unluckily, in many parts of the world, people have not realized that the third of these services is the most important. In their eagerness (热心) to make money from trees, some people have cut trees down in larger numbers, only to find that without them they have lost the best friends they had. And besides, they are usually too careless to plant and look after new trees, so the forests slowly disappear. This does not only mean that men will have fewer trees. The result are even more serious: for where there are trees, their roots break up soil---allowing the rain to sink in---and also bind (固定) the soil, preventing it from being washed away easily; but where there are no trees, the rain falls on hard ground and flows away, causing floods and carrying away the rich top-soil. When all the top-soil is gone, nothing stays but worthless desert. 51. The most important service of trees to men is . A. they help them to make money

In the Late 1860’s, Industry in America grew rapidly. More factories meant more jobs. But working conditions were dangerous. Employees(雇工) were forced to work as much as 16 hours a day in hot, dirty rooms. Children often worked alongside(并排) adults. Wages were usually very low.

Workers tried to improve conditions by forming unions. One of the first important unions was the Knights of Labor, formed in 1869. Blacks and women were welcomed as members. The Knights of Labor wanted an eight-hour workday, higher wages and better working conditions. The union called for an end to the employment of children under 14.

Together with other unions, the Knights of Labor tried to make changes through collective bargaining. Union leaders would meet with employers and talk. When collective(集体的) bargaining(协商) failed, the unions resorted to strikes. When some strikes that the unions held turned against them, many members left the Knights of Labor, and by 1890 the union died out.

But other unions survived. The AF of L, American Federation of Labor, was formed in 1881. It continued to push for the goals set by the Knights of Labor. However, most federal laws protecting workers and outlawing child labor were not passed until the 1930’s.
