Mr. Black travelled to Paris on business by air. When he got onto the plane, he looked for a window seat because he would love window seats like others. A moment later, he found there was only one window seat. A fat man was sitting next to it. To his surprise, the fat man didn’t take it. Mr. Black right away went towards it. However, he saw a notice on the seat, which said “This seat is preserved (预留) for proper load (负荷) balance. Thank you.” Mr. Black had never seen such a notice in a plane before, but he thought the plane must be

carrying specially heavy things, so he walked on and found one more empty seat, not beside a window, to sit in.

Several passengers tried to sit in the window seat beside the fat man, but they read the notice and went away. When the plane was almost full, a very beautiful girl hurried in. The fat man quickly took the notice off the seat and in this way he succeeded in having the company(陪伴) of the girl during the whole trip.

Mrs John B. Dodd first thought of the idea of a “father’s day” in 1909. She wanted a special day to honour her father, William Smart. William Smart, a Civil War veteran (退伍军人), whose wife (Mrs. Dodd’s mother) died in childbirth with their sixth child. Mr. Smart was left to raise the newborn and his other five children by himself on a farm in eastern Washington. As Mrs. Dodd grew up, she realized the strength and selflessness her father had shown in raising his children as a single parent.

The first Father’s Day was celebrated on June 19, 1910 in Spokane, Washington. At the same time, in various towns and cities across America other people were beginning to celebrated a “father’s day”. In 1924, President Calvin Coolidge supported the idea of a national Father’s Day. Finally in 1966 President Lyndon Johnson decided on declaring the third Sunday of June as Father’s Day.

Now Father’s Day has become a day of all men who act as a father figure. Stepfathers, uncles, grandfathers and adult male friends are all to be honoured on Father’s Day.
