Schools of robotic fish could be sent into the Thames to produce a 3D pollution map of the river. Researchers at the University of Essex in Colchester are working on the robotic fish as part of a £2.5million EU-funded project to find new ways of monitoring water waste.

Each fish will be about 50cm long, 15cm high and 12cm wide. They will be packed with pollution sensors(传感器)that can electronically \

Scientists have developed “swarm(群)intelligence techniques” which allow the fish to work as

a team without humans.

The robotic fish will communicate with each other using wi-fi as they seek out areas of

pollution. They work out where they are with inbuilt GPS systems and artificial intelligence software

will enable them to move without the need for a human operator: they will only warn staff if areas of pollution are found.

A fish that finds pollution sends the data of the location to others.

“Each school will contain five fish, and they will constantly monitor for pollutants,” said Dr.

Dongbing Gu, who is leading the research.

“When they find something, they will send a message to the rest of the school, who will then

gather in the area to take readings.”

The fish move their bodies up and down like waves—driven by motors—and use fins and a tail

to change direction. It is hoped they will travel at speeds of up to half a metre per second.

Working models could be available within 18 months. Different sensors will be fitted to hunt for different pollutants(污染物). The data could be used to build a “real time” 3D map of areas of

The fish will initially be used in ports to monitor leaks from large ships, but Dr Gu said the

same system could be used in the Thames. Researchers hope the robotic fish will be able to spend up to 24 hours in the water before needing to be recharged. 56. The purpose of the robotic fish project is to __________.

A. find out whether inbuilt GPS systems are useful B. find new ways to monitor water waste

C. prove that robotic fish can be sent into the Thames D. test the speed of the robotic fish

57. Robotic fish can find harmful pollutants by using __________.

A. GPS systems B. a 3D pollution map C. pollution sensors D. fins and a tail

58. According to the passage, which of the following statements is true? A. The robotic fish have been used in ports as well as in the Thames. B. It takes 24 hours for robotic fish to be recharged. C. The robotic fish can work as a team without humans.

Product arrived quickly. The description said there was a tear on the cover of the book. I was pleased that it was just a small tear and otherwise the book was in very good condition. This seller was honest and did not try to overplay the condition in order to make a sale.

Some good information Feb 06, 2010

This book does have some good information, but it does not talk at all about eating organic food, grass fed beef, free-range eggs, etc. The poisonous pesticides (杀虫剂) and artificial hormones (激素)

in our society have a huge effect on our health and some illnesses probably wouldn’t even exist if it weren’t for them.

This book is perfect for any questions you have about using food to help your body. We all know chicken soup helps colds, but did you know? This book will tell you exactly what’s special about

each food and what part of the body or disease it helps. Combat any health problems you have with this common sense food guide.

60. Who is the advertisement mainly intended for?

A. People who learn to treat patients.

B. People who publish books on health.

C. People who cook food for certain patients. D. People who try to improve their health. 61. Which of the following statements about the book is WRONG?

Environmentalists said our planet was doomed to die. Now one man says they are wrong. \物 种)are being driven to die out at record rates, and the rivers are so poisonous that fish are floating on

the surface , dead.

But there's a growing belief that what everyone takes for granted is wrong : things are actually

getting better. A new book is about to overturn our most basic assumptions about the world’s environment. Rivers , seas, rain and the atmosphere are all getting cleaner. The total amount of forests in the world is not declining. The Skeptical Environmentalist by Bjorn Lomborg ? professor of statistics at the University of Aarhus in Denmark, is an attack on the misleading claims of environmental groups, and the “bad news” culture that makes people believe everything is getting worse.

Now the attacks are increasingly coming from left-wing environmentalists such as Lomborg, a

former member of Greenpeace. The accusation is that, although the environment is improving, green groups — with profits of hundreds of millions of pounds a year — are using scare tactics (谋略)to

gain donations. Lomborg's book doesn't deny global warming—probably the biggest environmental

threat—butdestroys almost every other environmental claim with many official statistics.

The Worldwatch Institute claims that \

But Lomborg says that is simply rubbish. Since the dawn of agriculture the world has lost about 20 per cent of its forest cover, but in recent decades the forest area's depleting has come to a stop. land area , since the 1940s. Forests in countries such as the US,UK and Canada have actually been expanding over the past 40 years. Despite all the warnings the Amazon rainforest has only shrunk(缩 小) by about 15 per cent.

According to UN figures, the area of forests has remained almost steady, at about 30 per cent of total

Nor are all our species dying out. Some campaigners claim that 50 per cent of all species will

have died out within 50 years. But other studies show only 0. 08 per cent of species are dying out each year. Conservation efforts have been successful. Whales are no longer threatened and the bald eagle is off the endangered list.

Environmental groups claim that many of the improvements are the results of the success of their campaigns. Stephen Tindale, director of Greenpeace UK,said : “There are important examples , such as acid rain and ozone, where things weren't as bad as predicted, and that*s because

behaviour changed.”

63.In his book, The Skeptical Environmentalist, what is Lomborg's main argument?

A.Our planet is in bad shape.

B.The world's environment is improving.

C.The total amount of forests in the world is not declining. D.Conservation efforts have been successful.

64What is Lomborg's main accusation of environmentalists? A.They scared people into making donations.

B.They overturned our basic assumptions about the world's environment. C.They changed their behavior toward the environment. D.They only told people bad news about the environment.

A. reducing B. limiting C. expanding D. accelerating

No budget for your vacation? Try home exchanges – swapping houses with strangers. Agree to use each other’s cars, and you can save dollars on car rentals (租赁费), too.

Home exchanges are not new. At least one group, Intervac, has been facilitating such an

arrangement since 1953. But trading online is gaining popularity these days, with several sites in operation, including HomeExchanges. Founded in 1992, with some 28,000 listings, this company bills itself as the world’s largest home exchange club, reporting that membership has increased 30%

this year.

The annual fee is usually less than US$100. Members can access thousands of listings for

apartments, villas, suburban homes and farms around the world. Initial contact is made via e-mail, with subsequent communication usually by phone. Before a match is made, potential swappers tend to discuss a lot.

However, the concept may sound risky to some people. What about theft? Damage? These are

reasonable causes for concern, but equally unlikely. As one swapper puts it, “Nobody is going to fly across the ocean or drive 600 miles to come steal your TV. Besides, at the same time they’re staying in your home, you are staying in their home.”

Exchange sites recommend that swappers discuss such matters ahead of time. They may fill out

an agreement spelling out who shoulders which responsibilities if a problem arises. It does not matter if the agreement would hold up in court, but it does give the exchangers a little satisfaction.

Generally, the biggest complaint among home exchangers has to do with different standards of

cleanliness. Swappers are supposed to make sure their home is in order before they depart, but one person’s idea of “clean” may be more forgiving than another’s. Some owners say if they come back to a less-than-sparkling kitchen, it may be inconvenient but would not sour them on future exchanges.

67.What is the second paragraph mainly about?

A.How to exchange homes.

B.How home exchange is becoming popular. C.The biggest home exchange agency Intervac. D.A contrast between Intervac and HomeExchanges.

68.Which of the following is closest in meaning to “bills” in the second paragraph?

A.advertises

B.dedicates

C.replaces D.participates

69.How do home exchangers normally begin their communication?

A.By phone.

C.Via a matchmaker.

B.By e-mail.

D.Via a face-to-face meeting.

70.What is recommended in the passage to deal with theft and damage concerns?

A.One can file a lawsuit in court. B.Both parties can trade online.

C.Both parties can sign an agreement beforehand. D.One can damage the home of the other party in return.

Parents can help their seventh and eighth grade students stand out in and out of their English

classroom by introducing them to newspapers. Newspapers not only offer information on current events, but they can also be used to test your child's knowledge of grammar, vocabulary, and more.

Who, What, Where, When, Why, and How

Have your child read the first couple of paragraphs of a news story. Ask them to write down all

of the important facts, such as who, what, where, when, why and how. This helps parents to see if their children comprehend the basic facts and information they read.

Grammar

Parents can monitor a child's understanding of grammatical parts of speech (词性) without a

grammar textbook. Ask your child to read a paragraph in an article and then list a specific number of nouns, verbs, adjectives, adverbs, pronouns, prepositions and the like, which serves more of a test of their grammatical knowledge. Encourage them to list each of these parts of speech in a paragraph. Then, reread the paragraph to see if they missed anything.

Persuasion

Ask your child to select an advertisement from the newspaper. Have them investigate how

specific words or phrases influence their feelings about a particular product. Then, encourage them to create an advertisement of their own for an item they do not like. Tell them not to show their true feelings and try to make people want to buy this unwanted item. After that, ask them to list the persuasive techniques used in their ad.

Facts vs Opinions

Select an editorial for your middle schooler to read. Have your child divide a piece of paper into

two columns, one marked fact, and the other marked opinion. Have your student decide which column it fits under. This will help your child better understand facts versus opinions. Another related exercise is responding to an editorial. Encourage your child to write letters to the editor or responses to editorials or other articles. Before your child sends his or her letter, check the opinion section to see what requirements there are.

Headlines and Synonyms (同义词)

Ask your middle schooler to rewrite a couple of headlines using the synonyms of the original

words. Compare the headlines. Do the original versions or the rewrites sound better? This is a great exercise to help students learn synonyms and expand their vocabulary.

If you find your seventh or eighth grade child is struggling with these newspaper activities, it may be an indicator that they have fallen behind in their reading skills. These activities were designed with a seventh or eighth grader in mind; therefore, while they are educational, they should be more of reinforcement (增强) instead of a major reading challenge.

One possible version:

A good habit, a successful life

A habit is something that you do often or regularly almost without thinking, especially something

that is hard to stop doing.

Good habits of learning, such as previewing what you will study, listening to teachers attentively

in class, completing given assignments by yourself and reviewing what you’ve learned in time, will help you acquire more knowledge and improve your skills. Meanwhile, good habits of living will make you develop soundly, both physically and mentally. Therefore you must attach importance to healthy food, constant exercise, reasonable schedules and eyesight protection.

Good habits contribute to our success. Once a good habit is formed, it will give us power to

control ourselves. While we are making efforts to form good habits, we should try to kick bad habits. Though bad habits are hard to get rid of, yet we all know where there is a will, there is a way. If we insist on behaving ourselves(表现得体,有礼貌) properly, we are sure to remove them.

Do remember good habits will give us a successful life.

M: I quite agree with you. They are terrible. They are a complete waste of time, but my wife

disagrees with me.

W: Actually, what bothers me is the violence. There are far too many detective shows.

M: I couldn’t agree with you more. There aren’t enough educational programs, and even the

news shows are not well done.

W: You are absolutely right. They are too brief. They don’t tell you anything. M: Besides, I think the host of the news shows is conventional and lacks personality. W: Exactly! So I still depend on Channel 6 for news. 听第 8 段材料,回答第 12 至 14 题。

W: Pardon me, officer. M: Yes?

W: We’re looking for the big department store around here. M: I’m afraid you’re headed in the wrong direction.

W: But we were told that it was somewhere here in the downtown area. M: Yes, it is, but I meant you’re walking the wrong way. W: Oh, I see. Could we trouble you for directions to get there?

M: It’s no trouble. Just walk back the same way you came for about a block, then turn right and

stay on that street until you come to the next crossroads.

W: That’s the corner of Main Street and Forest Street, isn’t it? M: That’s right.

W: Down a block to Main Street then right another block to Forest Street. Thanks very much. M: Don’t mention it.

M: Hi, Jenny. Why have you come to school so early?

W: I want to get a front row seat and review one more time before the test because I failed a

course last term. Why are you here so early, too, Jack?

M: I get out of my car here at this time every day. You seem to be nervous about your lessons.

Have you finished your review?

W: I’ve only been studying night and day for the last week. If I don’t get high marks this time, I

won’t get the support of my government. What about you?

M: I’m not nervous at all. This subject is really just a review for me. I’ve been learning it for

two years.

W: That’s lucky for you. But I’m still worried about my test. M: Well, cheer up. Hope for good luck. W: Thanks.

Hello, everyone! My name is Bruce Hall. I’m happy to be your English teacher.

First of all, I’d like to tell you something about myself. I was born in Paris. When I grew up, I

wanted to make money. The winter of Paris is cold, but I didn’t want to spend money on warm clothes. So I went to a warm place—Egypt, and led camels for tourists under the pyramids. After some time, I went to study at California State University, with the money I had earned in Egypt. Later, I went to Salt Lake City and became a high school teacher.

It is five years ago since I came to China as a teacher of English. I have taught a wide range of

students, such as kindergarten classes, primary school children, teenagers, university students and adults. My classes are designed specially to meet the needs of each student whether they want to prepare for various exams, study business English, or generally learn to speak English.

I love to talk about western culture, customs, traditions, lifestyle and education system. I’m an

honest, friendly and reliable person, and I love to get to know new people and I’m ready to accept new challenges as they come to me. So if you have any difficulty in learning English, please don’t hesitate to come to me. You may either call me at 85668992 or email me at bruce@hotmail.com.
