Want a journey that is really more interesting than the destination? Then you might want to fly to one of these airports.

The runway where planes have been known to drop off a cliff

Taking off at the Matekane airstrip(飞机跑道) in Lesotho, South Africa, is a frightening experience, as the plane soars over an about 600-meter cliff face after taking off.

Matekane’s runway sits 2286 metres up on a mountain gully(沟渠), so it takes nerves of steel to both land and take off. If a plane doesn’t manage to pick up enough speed on the 400 metre-long airstrip, it falls off the cliff before it takes flight. The ice runway

Have you ever imagined if the runway were made of ice!

That’s a reality for anyone flying into Doris Lake Aerodrome—a privately owned ice runway located on Doris Lake in Nunavut, Canada. The small airport is open from January to April and it mainly operates for gold mining. The failed runway

The French tried to build a concrete airstrip at their Dumont D’Urville research

station in the Antarctic more than two decades ago.

But they failed when the area was badly damaged by a storm, just months before its completion.

Work was stopped because attempts to rebuild the airstrip would have negatively affected local wildlife, but small aircraft still use the long snow-free area to land.

The inner—city water airstrip

Vancouver’s seaplane terminal in Canada is home to the world’s largest all-seaplane airline.

Flying down at high speed and then landing on water is exciting enough for most passengers, but what really makes this particular port so special is its location. It’s located in the middle of downtown Vancouver, among the city’s tallest skyscrapers.

1. What is special about the Matekane airstrip? A. It is constructed on ice.

B. It is open for one month every April. C. It was built for scientific research. D. It is on the edge of a cliff.

2. Where is the inner-city water airstrip located?

A. In Canada. B. In France. C. In South Africa. D. In the Antarctic. 3. Due to the environmental protection factor, _________was never completed. A. the runway on Doris Lake.

B. the runway at the Dumont D’Urville research station. C. the airstrip in the middle of downtown Vancouver. D. the Matekane airstrip in Lesotho. B

In my Australian backyard live many wild magpies(喜鹊) who are 100% free to come and go as they please. Despite the amazing bonds I have formed with them, none of them have been hand-raised by me; their real parents have brought them up in the wild.

2

I believe I have one of the most entertaining backyards in Australia. I posted a lot of interesting videos on the Internet. Some of you may be familiar with the videos of the magpie hanging upside down off a towel, with a concerned onlooker standing beside him wondering what his friend is doing.

Battling severe social anxiety most of my life, I don’t often get out of my house much due to this. I prefer to keep to myself and spend time with birds rather than people. I don’t go out to parties or social events; in fact, I avoid all human interaction if possible! Even walking to the letterbox some days can be a nightmare, for fear of the chance that I may come across some strangers and have to speak to them. But I have found a positive way out of my situation. I am lucky enough to spend most of my time with the magpies in my backyard, and in return, I am able to form special relationships with every one of them. The magpies have been my best friends and light at the end of the tunnel.

When I look into the eyes of magpies I see beautiful souls and intelligent beings that have individual personalities and feelings, just like we do. Each one is unique and special; they have as much right to live on this earth as we do.

I could not imagine my life without them; they are my feathered family. They have taught me a lot about their magpie world, which I am fortunate enough to be a part of.

4. What do we know about the author from the passage? A. She suffers from social anxiety.

B. She prefers to go out to be close to nature. C. She has devoted herself to protecting magpies. D. She has raised many magpies in her backyard.

5. What does the underlined word “them” in the third paragraph probably refer to?

A. Magpies. B. Strangers. C. Neighbors. D. Friends. 6. What view does the author hold? A. Humans and magpies have equal rights.

B. Magpies are the most intelligent of all animals.

3

C. Magpies can control their emotions like human beings. D. Magpies are too free to be friends with. 7. What would be the best title for the text?

A. The Animal World. B. Animal Friendship.

C. Pets for Special Anxiety Sufferers. D. My Special Magpie Friends C

Childhood bullying(霸凌) has long been considered to have a cruel and unnecessary effect on too many youngsters’ childhoods. But the consequences of it can be felt into adulthood when it comes to mental health, a new study has found.

Persistent bullying when young is also linked to relationships breaking down and low employment, they said.

Scientists have discovered it has a strong link to mental health service use throughout a person’s life. The study, by the London School of Economics and Political Science (LSE) and King’s College London, tracked more than 9000 people for about 40 years.

It found more boys than girls used mental health services in childhood and adolescence. On the contrary, more women than men were found to use it in adulthood. Lead researcher Dr Sara Evans-Lacko said the impact of childhood bullying was most notable at an early age. But the associate professor from LSE’s personal social services research unit said it could still be significant at 50.

“Individuals who were frequently bullied during childhood were more than twice as likely to use mental health services during childhood or adolescence,” she said. “Even at the age of 50, they were still 30 percent more likely to use mental health services compared to those who were not bullied. Half the adult population with a psychotic(精神病的) disorder already showed signs of poor mental health by the age of 15.”

If unnoticed or untreated, the early onset(发病) of mental health problems could be the starting point of persistent disorders like depression and anxiety, self-harm and psychotic disorders, she said.

Early intervention to prevent childhood bullying would both help to stop distress

and save money in healthcare over the course of a person’s life.

Dr Sara Evans-Lacko said: “Anti-bullying initiatives(举措) are relatively inexpensive, estimated at £15.50 per pupil per year. Given the current tremendous stress on the health system, policies and practices to prevent bulling should be a high priority.”

8. According to Dr Evans-Lacko, _______________.

A. childhood bullying has crueller effects on women than men.

B. childhood bullying’s effects can only be felt in adulthood when it comes to mental health.

C. the mental health services are too expensive for ordinary people. D. people should pay more attention to anti-bullying measures. 9. What does the underlined word “notable” mean?

A. important B. lasting C. obvious D. immediate 10. People tend to use the mental health services when_____________. A. they are bullied more than twice in their childhood. B. they are bullied frequently during childhood.

C. they have reached the age of 50 without being bullied. D. they are 15 with poor mental health.

11. Where does the text most probably come from?

A. Reader’s Digest. B. Psychological Medicine. C. The times. D. National Geographic. D

Two men successfully rescued a beached shark on the coast of northeast Newfoundland, Canada. Derrick Chaulk was driving in Norris Arm North when he saw what he thought was a beached whale.

As reported by CBC News, when he left his vehicle and got closer, he saw that it was a Greenland shark that was still alive and estimated it measured approximately eight feet and weighed 253 pounds. Greenland sharks are rare in that area but what also seemed unusual was that the animal had a large moose hide(驼鹿皮) sticking out of its mouth. About the hide, Derrick told CBC, “It had the fur on it and it was
