How I Practice My Spoken English

Due to various reasons, students do not have enough opportunity to practice their oral English in Class. Many of my classmates complain about it and some even go so far as to say it is impossible to improve their spoken English owing to the lack of English-speaking environment. However, I don’t agree with them. Here, I’d like to say a few words on how I practice my spoken English.

新视野大学英语第二册同步练习答案

In the first place, I always make a point of building a large vocabulary. I will see to it that I memorize all the new words and expressions that appear in my textbooks and those that I come across elsewhere. Moreover, I take great pains to make use of them when I practice speaking. Secondly, and the most important of all, I will not wait for a chance to speak the language; I look for such a chance actively. When a question is asked in an English class, I will be among those few students who raise their hands and sometime I will just speak out my ideas directly. If I come across a native speaker, I will manage to start a friendly conversation. Last but not least, I also sign up for an English speaking course on weekends or during the vacation. In such a course, I can learn some useful speaking skills and have plenty of opportunity to practice speaking.

Part VI

The Importance of Self-confidence

Whatever one does, one should do it with confidence. If one has no confidence, there is little possibility that one would ever achieve anything, especially when one is faced with drawbacks or hardships. This truth seems to be self-evident. However, in reality we do see a lot of people who complain that they lack the ability to do something or that their difficulties are too great to overcome. For some, this might be true. But for many others, this only shows that they have lost their heart.

Why do people often feel frustrated even though they are capable of doing something? There are, among others, two main reasons. First, these people do not have a correct opinion about themselves. Second, they overestimate their difficulties.

It is possible to build up faith in oneself by having the right attitude towards his own abilities. We should never underestimate our abilities, but should believe in the proverb: “where there is a will, there is a way.” Self-confidence is a must for fulfilling a task successfully.

Part VI

Diligence or Intelligence

Some people think that intelligence is the most important thing for success. They say that all of the scientists and experts of the world are geniuses who made all the inventions. All of the capable people and the social elite are of superior intelligence.

Some other people take different viewpoints. They believe that not intelligence but diligence is of greater importance to one’s success. According to their viewpoints, many or the majority of successful people are of only average intelligence; even if they do have high intelligence, it is not inherent but it is gained through constant and diligent efforts. Therefore, diligence is the most essential element to success.

In my opinion both intelligence and diligence are important to success. Without intelligence even if you work very hard and make great efforts, the chance of success is still slim; without diligence even if you are extremely clever, most probably you will still be a good-for-nothing. Success requires combining intelligence with diligence. As long as you have average intelligence and keep making efforts, you will have chances to succeed.

The most Impressive Place That I Have Ever Visited

I have visited many places in our country, the most impressive of which is Beijing. Beijing is the capital of China and is also a beautiful city with a very long history. Three characteristics of Peking make it the most impressive city to me which are the following:

First of all, the ancient buildings such as the Museum of Palaces, the Great Wall, the Great Hall of the People, the Chairman Mao’s Memorial, the Monument to the People’s Heroes, the Heaven Temple, the summer Palace, the Winter Palaces (though only relics remain) are rather magnificent. The Tian An Men Square is also quite splendid. The second characteristic of Beijing which has left strong impressions on me is its wide and straight thoroughfares with tall trees on both sides, on which traffic is very heavy. The third characteristic is crowed people on the streets and lanes, of whom many are blond foreigners. The people in Beijing are courteous and warm to travelers, most of them will not hesitate to offer help if you are in difficulty.

I love this city and will never forget it.

Part VI

Does Fate Decide One’s Life?

Some people say that fate, which is beyond man’s power of control, decides whether you will succeed or fail in your life and career, and your whole life has been arranged the moment you were born, so you have no choice but to obey the arrangement of destiny.

In my opinion, the above-mention viewpoint is ridiculous and absurd. Anyone’s success has to be depended upon his or her efforts, but not on fate. To be frank, sometimes you had really made great efforts but you didn’t succeed, but this did not mean that destiny played tricks on you. Maybe your way of action was not proper; maybe the conditions for success were not mature yet; maybe your efforts were not enough. As a matter of fact success depends on both your own efforts and favorable circumstances. People who are successful are always those who can grasp opportunities. If you are able to seize opportunities and make full use of them, fate will smile to you, as the proverb goes like this, “God helps those who help themselves.”

So let’s make efforts to look for opportunities to success and take full advantage of them as soon as they occur. So long as we can discover such opportunities and work hard, we will be the master of fate rather than the slave of it.

My Witness of a Good Deed

新视野大学英语第二册同步练习答案

On October 2, 2004 during the National Day, I witnessed a good deed in Zhongshan Park just on my visit to the Forbidden City.

It was around five o’clock in the afternoon and it was raining heavily. Hardly had I got to the entrance to the Park when I heard a foreign woman screaming “Oh! My God!” with that, I stopped and turned to her. “What happened to you? What can I do for you?” a policeman on duty asked her earnestly. “My wallet is lost. There is all my money, visa and something important to me,” the woman answered with eagerness. “Please take it easy. I will put your case in file, and once it is found out, I will report you. Here is some money. You are welcome to receive and use it first.” The foreigner was only too moved to say “That’s great! Thank you very much” to the policeman.

In my eyes, the major responsibility for this case was not related to the policeman. On the contrary, he should be praised for his good deed. It was because of his hearty and unselfish help that Beijing and China must have deeply impressed many foreign visitors. Of course, the thief should be blamed for his or her misconduct. If the case had not taken place, the consequence that her valuables were stolen would not have been so serious to the foreign woman. As we know, the loss of visa means everything to a foreigner.

Dear John,

I’m very glad to hear that you have passed the entrance examination and been accepted by a very famous university. I feel very proud of you and I believe you really deserve the honor since you have been working so hard on that.

As you have mentioned in the letter, there are both some similarities and differences between college life and the life in high school. First, you have to go on working hard as there are a lot of subjects for you to learn. Second, in high school, teachers will probably teel you what to learn and how to learn in details and will also monitor your learning performance, while in college teacher work like tour guides and you have to find out your own ways to acquire knowledge and solve problems.

Last, be optimistic. If you hope to adapt yourself to this new environment, you’d better be positive no matter what difficulties you will experience in your college life.

May you adapt yourself to the college life as soon as possible!

Truly Yours, Carolyn

China’s Total Volume of Foreign Trade

The figures in the table demonstrate the great changes of the total import and export volume from 1973 to 1998. we can see that since 1978-the start of China’s reform and opening-up to the outside world, China’s total volume of foreign trade had increased much faster than ever before. The unfavorable trade balance had kept diminishing since 1978 and favorable trade balance has emerged.

The data in the table clearly indicate that the foreign trade is growing healthily and begins to play a more important role in China’s economical construction. Before 1978, the total volume of foreign trade covered a very low percentage, and the trade trend remained unfavorable. From 1978,, the total trade volume tripled or was even ten and hundred times more that before 1978 (from the total volume 130.5 in 1973 to 3669.1 in 1998). The most important was that Chinese export has begun to surpass its import since 1990, which would surely lead to the increase of the foreign exchange reserve amount.

To sum up, the practice of reform and opening-up policy to the outside world does benefit our country and our people. With the foreign exchange reserve accumulating, China will be among the economic powers in the world.

Haste Makes Waste

We all know the proverb “Haste makes waste” which is close to mean that doing everything in a hurry is equal to get little benefit even if you offer great efforts. There is no doubt that it is true. Therefore, we should do things step by step and arrange them in advance.

Plenty of examples in our daily life proved this point. A case in point is English study. With

good command of pronunciation, grammar, words and phrases we know how to make correct sentences and can understand what other say. Otherwise, without a solid basic knowledge that takes lots of time to learn and to accumulate, we will not grasp it well let alone communicate with other people.

From what mentioned above, we may reasonably come to the conclusion that the more hasty we are, the slower we achieve completeness and success. Therefore, we should make things move forward steadily. In short, haste makes waste.
