Being a victim of schoolyard violence can help pupils learn how to manage argument and develop their ability to get along with others, it was claimed.

Helene Guldberg, associate lecturer in child development at the Open University, said trying to stop the ―supposedly terrible dangers of bullying(欺负)‖ can do more harm than good. She insisted teachers should not break up ―everyday playground argument‖, saying children should be left to deal with it themselves.

In an on-line article, Dr. Guldberg said that bullying was ―an experience that children need to develop‖. But the comments were strongly criticized by anti-bullying campaigners.

According to official figures, almost half of children claim they are bullied at school. One of the biggest studies of its kind by Ofsted showed 48 percent of young people had been orally or physically abused in the last year. It comes despite a number of government measures designed to crack down on the threats.

Writing on a website, Dr. Guldberg said: ―Teachers are increasingly taking the task of looking after children’s health and well-being rather than being allowed to get on with the task of educating them. Children are encouraged to assume their relationships with other children are damaging, and encouraged to look upon their classmates with suspicion.‖ She added: ―If we treat children as if they cannot possibly cope with hurtful experiences, then we will likely to weaken their confidence and make them less likely to cope with difficult events in the future. In effect, we will prevent them from growing up.‖

The comments echo(附和) remarks made by teachers in recent years who claim the education system has been too focused on developing children’s social skills at the expense of academic learning. But Sue Steel, national manager of the Anti-Bullying Alliance, said: ―Children who are being bullied often find it difficult to tell anyone. Teachers can help by giving appropriate attention.‖

Acting is such an over-crowded profession that the only advice that should be given to a young person thinking of going on the stage is ―Don’t!‖. But it is useless to try to discourage someone who feels that he must act, though the chances of his becoming famous are slim. The normal way to begin is to go to a drama school. Usually only students who show promise and talent are accepted, and the course lasts two years. Then the young actor or actress takes up work with a repertory company, usually as an assistant stage manager. This means doing everything that there is to do in the theatre: painting scenery, looking after the furniture, taking care of the costumes, and even acting in very small parts. It is very hard work indeed. The hours are long and the salary is tiny. But young actors with the stage in their blood are happy, waiting for the chances of working with a better company, or perhaps in films or television.

Of course, some people have unusual chances which lead to fame and success without this long and dull training. Connie Pratt, for example, was just an ordinary girl working in a bicycle factory. A film producer happened to catch sight of her one morning waiting at a bus stop, as he drove past in his big car. He told the driver to stop, and he got out to speak to the girl. He asked her if she would like to go to the film studio to do a test, and at first she thought he was joking. Then she got angry and said she would call the police. It took the producer twenty minutes to tell Connie that he was serious. Then an appointment was made for her to go to the studio the next day. The test was successful. They gave her some necessary lessons and within a few weeks she was playing the leading part opposite one of the most famous actors of the day. Of Course, she was given a more dramatic name, which is now world-famous. But chances like this happen once in a blue moon!

65. According to the passage, the main reason why young people should be discouraged from becoming actors is ______.

A. actors are very unusual people

B. the course at the drama school lasts two years C. acting is really a hard job D. there are already too many actors

66. According to the context, the sentence ―But young actors with the stage in their blood are happy‖ at the end of the first paragraph means ______.

A. they don’t care if their job is hard B. they like the stage naturally C. they are born happy D. they are easily satisfied

3

67. Connie Pratt soon became a famous actress after ______.

A. learning some lessons about the art of speaking B. playing her part in the ―Blue Colored Moon‖ C. successfully matching the most famous actors

D. acting a leading part with a most famous actor at that time

68. The phrase ―once in a blue moon‖ in last line means ______.

A. all at once B. once for a long time C. once in a while D. once and for all

Five years ago, David Smith wore an expensive suit to work every day. ―I was a clothes addict,‖ he jokes. ―I used to carry a fresh suit to work with me so I could change if my clothes got wrinkled.‖ Today David wears casual clothes --- khaki pants and sports shirt --- to the office. He hardly ever wears a necktie. ―I’m working harder than ever,‖ David says, ―and I need to feel comfortable.‖

More and more companies are allowing their office workers to wear casual clothes to work in the United States. The change from formal to casual office wear has been gradual. In the early 1990s, many companies allowed their employees to wear casual clothes on Friday (but only on Friday). This became known as ―dress-down Friday‖ or ―casual Friday‖. ―What started out as an extra one-day-a-week benefit for employees has really become an everyday thing.‖ said business consultant Maisly Jones.

Why have so many companies started allowing their employees to wear casual clothes? One reason is that it’s easier for a company to attract new employees if it has a casual dress code. ―A lot of young people don’t want to dress up for work,‖ says the owner of a software company, ―so it’s hard to hire people if you have a conservative (保守的) dress code.‖ Another reason is that people seem happier and more productive when they are wearing comfortable clothes. In a study conducted by Levi Strauss and Company, 85 percent of employers say that they believe that casual dress improves employee morale (士气). Only 4 percent of employers say that casual dress has a negative impact on productivity. Supporters of casual office wear also argue that a casual dress code helps them save money. ―Suits are expensive, if you have to wear one every day,‖ one person said. ―For the same amount of money, you can buy a lot more casual clothes.‖

65. David Smith refers to himself as having been ―a clothes addict,‖ because ______. A. he often wore khaki pants and a sports shirt B. he couldn’t stand a clean appearance

C. he wanted his clothes to look neat all the time D. he didn’t want to spend much money on clothes

66. David Smith wears casual clothes now, because ______.

A. they make him feel at ease when working B. he cannot afford to buy expensive clothes

C. he looks attractive in casual clothes D. he no longer works in that company 67. According to this passage, which of the following statements is TRUE? A. Company workers started to dress down at work about twenty years ago. B. Dress-down has become an everyday phenomenon since the early 1990s. C. ―Dress-down Friday‖ was first given as a favor from employers. D. Many workers want to wear casual clothes to attract people.

68. In this passage, the following advantages of casual office wear are mentioned in the passage

except ______.

A. saving employees’ money B. making employees more attractive

6

C. improving employees’ motivation D. making employees happier

United States Olympic hockey coach Herb Brooks knew that he had a pool of good but young hockey players as he watched them play during the tryouts for the 1980 national team. He decided to choose the players who were the most aggressive and played the hardest.

Brooks was pleased with his final choices. However, he knew his team would be the underdog if they faced the powerful team of professionals from the Soviet Union (USSR). During the week before the Olympics began, the U.S. team played the Soviets in an exhibition game and last badly, 10-3. In spite of the defeat, Brooks thought that if his team played up to their potential, they might be able to win a medal.

After the 1980 Winter Olympic Games began in Lake Placid, New York, the United States was behind Sweden 2-1 in their first game. With a last-second shot, Bill Baker tied(与……打成平局) the game for the U.S. team.

In the second round, the United States defeated Czechoslovakia 7-3. They defeated Norway 5-1 in their next game and then defeated Romania 7-2. A 4-2 win over West Germany followed. With a record of four wins and one tie, the Americans advanced to the medal round. Their opponent was the powerful team from the USSR. SOUTH PARIS, Maine For eight students in the Wilderness Leadership class at Oxford Hills High School, a three-day weekend hike in the White Mountain National Forest sounded like a fun, challenging course requirement.

But when a storm dumped up to 3 feet of snow on western Maine, a harsh learning experience turned into a crash course in winter survival.

Reported missing from their scheduled meeting place in Gilead at 5:30 p.m. Sunday, the eight students and two teachers were not found until 11 a.m. yesterday [Monday], after a pilot spotted the group moving in rugged snow-blanketed area. The discovery followed an unsuccessful ground search by volunteers on snowshoes.

After the group was reported missing Sunday, volunteers hiked 3 miles into the woods to look for the students. The five-hour effort turned up nothing and the decision was made to wait until yesterday morning to also canvass the area by air. A Maine Warden Service pilot lifted off and spotted the group close to their intended trail at about 11 a.m. Strong airflow prevented him from descending toward the hikers but the group clearly recognized the plane as part of a search team.

―They waved at the plane. They laid down, spread out, and waved,‖ said Mark Latti, a spokesman for the Maine Warden Service. ―The pilot then guided a search party into their location.‖

11

68. Before yesterday, the three-day weekend hike was supposed to be a _____. A. fun and relaxing excursion B. ridiculous course requirement C. crash course for wilderness survival D. challenging learning experience 69. ? A pilot spotted the group in the snow-blanket area. ? A rescue team arrived at the site of the accident.

? A volunteer search group set out to look for the students. ? The hikers waved to make themselves discovered.

71.

A. ????? C. ????? B. ????? D. ?????

Which of the following statements is TRUE?

A. The volunteers gave up the search at last because of the airflow. B. The pilot succeeded in landing besides the hikers.

C. The hikers almost stuck to their planned route in spite of the heavy snow. D. The search party went into the woods by air, and saved the students out.

The canopy, the upper level of the trees in the rain forest, holds too much of climbing mammals (哺乳动物) of moderately large size, which may include monkeys, cats, civets, and porcupines. Smaller species, including such as mice and small squirrels, are not as common overall in high tropical canopies as they are in most habitats globally.

Small mammals, being warm blooded, suffer hardship in the exposed and uncertain environment of the uppermost trees. Because a small body has more surface area per unit of weight than a large one of similar shape, it gains or loses heat more rapidly. Thus, in the trees, where protection from heat and cold may be scarce and conditions may be changeable, a small mammal may have trouble maintaining its body temperature.

Small size makes it easy to scramble among twigs (嫩枝) and branches in the canopy for insects, flowers, or fruit, but small mammals are defeated, in the competition for food, by large ones that have their own strategies for browsing among food-rich twigs. The weight of an ape hanging below a branch draws the leaves down so that fruit-bearing leaves drop toward the ape’s face. Walking or leaping species of a similar or even larger size access the outer twigs either by breaking and gaining the whole branch or by catching hold of hard branches with the feet or tail and picking food with their hands.

Small climbing animals may reach twigs readily, but it is harder for them than for large climbing animals to cross the wide gaps from one tree top to the next that typify the high canopy. A gibbon can hurl itself farther than a mouse can: it can achieve a running start, and it can more effectively use a branch as a springboard (跳板). The forward movement of a small animal is seriously reduced by the air friction (摩擦) against the relatively large surface area of its body. 68. Which of the following questions does the passage answer?

13

A. How is the rain forest different from other habitats?

B. How does an animal’s body size influence an animal’s need for food? C. Why does rain forest provide an unusual variety of food for animals? D. Why do large animals tend to dominate the upper canopy of the rain forest?

69. According to paragraph 2, which of the following is true about the small mammals in the rain

forest?

A. They have body shapes that are adapted to life in the canopy.

B. They prefer the temperature and climate of the canopy to that of other environments. C. They have difficulty with the changing conditions in the canopy. D. They use the trees of the canopy for protection from heat and cold.

70. When discussing animal size in paragraph 3, the author indicates that ________. A. small animals require appropriately more food than larger animals do

B. a large animal’s size is an advantage in obtaining food in the canopy C. small animals are often attacked by larger animals in the rain forest

D. small animals and large animals are equally good at obtaining food in the canopy difficult for small mammals?

A. Air friction against the body surface. B. The thickness of the branches. C. The dense leaves of the tree top.

D. The inability to use the front feet as hands. 65. A 66. D 67. C 68. D 69. C 70. B 71. A

The State of Marriage Today

Is there something seriously wrong with marriage today? During the past 50 years, the rate of divorce in the United States has exploded: almost 50%of marriages end in divorce now, and the evidence suggests it is going to get worse, if this trend continues. It will lead to the breakup of the family, according to a spokesperson for the National Family Association. Some futurists predict that in 100 years, the average American will marry at least four times and extramarital affairs(婚外恋) will be even more common than they are now.

But what are the reasons for this, and is the picture really so depressing? The answer to the first question is really quite simple: marriage is no longer the necessity it once was. The practice of marriage has been based for years partly on economic need. Women used to be economically dependent on their husbands as they usually didn’t have jobs outside the home. But with the rising number of women in well-paying jobs, this is no longer the case, so they don’t feel that they need to stay in a failing marriage.

In answer to the second question, the prospects may not be as pessimistic as they seem. While the rate of divorce has risen, the rate of couples marrying has never actually fallen very much, so marriage is still quite popular. In addition to this, many couples now cohabit(同居) and

71. According to the last paragraph, what makes jumping from one tree crown to another

14

don’t bother to marry. These couples are effectively married, but they do not appear in either the marriage or divorce statistics. In fact, more than 50%of first marriages survive. The statistics are unreliable because there is a higher number of divorces in second and third marriages than in first marriages.

So is marriage really an outdated practice? The fact that most people still get married indicates that it isn’t. And it is also true that married couples have a healthier life than single people: they suffer less from stress and its consequences, such as heart problems, and married men generally consider themselves more satisfied than their single counterparts. Perhaps the key is to find out what makes a successful marriage and apply it to all of our relationships!

65. What does ―this is no longer the case‖ in paragraph two mean? A. It is not necessary to get married any more. B. Women do not need a husband any longer.

C. Women are not economically dependent any more. D. Many wives do well-paying jobs outside home now.

66. Why may the prospects of marriage not be as depressing as it appears? A. Many people still like to get married.

B. The rate of divorce has actually decreased. C. many couples would rather cohabit than marry D. The statistics of divorce is not quite true。

67. How do people usually feel in their marriage life?

A. They are much safer. B. They feel no longer single. C. They are more satisfied. D. They suffer a lot less.

68. Which of the following about marriage is NOT mentioned in the passage? A. There will be more relationships outside marriage. B. Many people try to get married again after divorce. C. Marriage has long been partly an economic need. D. It is a fact that most people choose to get married.

The Diet Zone: A Dangerous Place

Diet Coke, diet Pepsi, diet pills, no-fat diet, vegetable diet. We are surrounded by the word ―diet‖ everywhere we look and listen. We have so easily been attracted by the promise and potential of diet products that we have stopped thinking about what diet products are doing to us. We are paying for products that harm us psychologically and physically.

Diet products weaken us psychologically. On one level, we are not allowing our brain to admit that our weight problems lie not in actually losing the weight, but in controlling the consumption of fatty, high-calorie, unhealthy foods. Diet products allow us to jump over the thinking stage and go straight for the scale instead. All we have to do is to swallow or recognize the word ―diet‖ in food labels.

On another level, diet products have greater psychological effects. Every time we have a zero-calorie drink, we are telling ourselves without our awareness that we don’t have to work to get results. Diet products make people believe that gain comes without pain, and that life can be without resistance and struggle.

The danger of diet products lies not only in the psychological effects they have on us, but also in the physical harm they cause. Diet foods can indirectly harm our bodies because consuming them instead of healthy foods means we are preventing our bodies from having basic nutrients. Diet foods and diet pills contain zero calorie only because the diet industry has created chemicals to produce these wonder products. Diet products may not be nutritional, and the chemicals that go into diet products are potentially dangerous.

Now that we are aware of the effects that diet products have on us, it is time to seriously think about buying them. Losing weight lies in the power of minds, not in the power of chemicals. Once we realize this, we will be much better able to resist diet products, and therefore prevent the psychological harm that comes from using them. 65. From Paragraph 1, we learn that . A. diet products fail to bring out people’s potential B. people have difficulty in choosing diet products C. diet products are misleading people D. people are fed up with diet products

66. One psychological effect of diet products is that people tend to . A. try out a variety of diet foods B. hesitate before they enjoy diet foods C. pay attention to their own eating habits D. watch their weight rather than their diet 67. In Paragraph 3, ―gain comes without pain‖ probably means . A. losing weight is effortless B. it costs a lot to lose weight C. diet products bring no pain D. diet products are free from calories 68. Diet products indirectly harm people physically because such products . A. are over-consumed B. lack basic nutrients C. are short of chemicals D. provide too much energy

Downloading music over the Internet is pretty common among high school and college

17

students. However, when students download and share copyrighted music without permission, they are against the law.

A survey of young people’s music ownership has found that teenagers and college students have an average of more than 800 illegally copied songs each on their digital music players.Half of those surveyed share all the music on their hard drive (硬盘), enabling others to copy hundreds of songs at any one time. Some students were found to have randomly linked their personal blogs to music sites, so as to allow free trial listening of copyrighted songs for blog visitors, or adopted some of the songs as the background music for their blogs. Such practices may be easy and free, but there are consequences.

Sandra Dowd, a student of Central Michigan University, was fined US$7,500 for downloading 501 files from LimeWire, a peer-to-peer file sharing program. Sandra claimed that she was unaware that her downloads were illegal until she was contacted by authorities. Similarly, Mike Lewinski paid US$4,000 to settle a lawsuit(起诉)against him for copyright violation (违反). Mike expressed shock and couldn’t believe that this was happening to him. ―I just wanted to save some money and I always thought the threat was just a scare tactic(战术).‖ ―You know, everyone does it,‖ added Mike. The RIAA (Recording Industry Association of America), the organization that files lawsuits against illegal downloaders, states that suing (控告) students was by no means their first choice. Unfortunately, without the threat of consequences, students are just not changing their behavior. Education alone is not enough to stop the extraordinary growth of the illegal downloading practice.

69. What does Mike mean by saying that ―the threat was just a scare tactic‖? A. One should not be afraid of threats. B. A lawsuit will result from the threat. C. It is unfair to scare people with a threat.

D. No serious consequence will follow the threat.

70. What is RIAA’s attitude towards students’ illegal downloading behavior? A. They believe that education will help greatly in protecting copyrights.

B. They profit from the fines illegal downloaders pay for copyright violations. C. They like to sue students for downloading music illegally from the Internet.

D. They think that illegal downloading behavior needs tough measures to correct. 71. What’s the best title for this passage? A. Copyright Violators, Beware! B. How to Get Free Music Online!

C. A Survey of Students’ Downloading Habits

D. Get rid of Illegal Music Download? Impossible!

A Teacher’s Lesson

When Mrs. Thompson stood in front of her 5th grade class on the very first day of school, she told the children a lie. Like most teachers, she looked at her students and said that she loved them all the same.

18

But that was impossible, because there in the front row was a little boy named Teddy Stoddard. Mrs. Thompson had watched Teddy the year before and noticed that he didn't play well with the other children, that his clothes were messy and that he constantly needed a bath. And Teddy could be unpleasant. It got to the point where Mrs. Thompson would actually take delight in marking his papers with a broad red pen, making bold X's and then putting a big \of his papers.

One day Mrs. Thompson was reviewing each child's past records and she put Teddy's off until last. However, when she reviewed his file, she was in for a surprise.

Teddy's first grade teacher wrote, \be around.\

His second grade teacher wrote, \but he is troubled because his mother has a serious illness and life at home must be a struggle.\

His third grade teacher wrote, \best but his father doesn't show much interest and his home life will soon affect him if some steps aren't taken.\

Teddy's fourth grade teacher wrote, \school.\

By now, Mrs. Thompson realized the problem and she was ashamed of herself. She felt even worse when her students brought her Christmas presents, wrapped in beautiful ribbons and bright paper, except for Teddy's. His present was clumsily wrapped in the heavy, brown paper that he got from a grocery bag.

Mrs. Thompson took pains to open it in the middle of the other presents. Some of the children started to laugh when she found a rhinestone(人造钻石) necklace with some of the stones missing. But she stopped the children's laughter when she said aloud how pretty the necklace was and put it on.

Teddy Stoddard stayed after school that day just long enough to say, \you looked just like my Mom used to.\Thompson paid particular attention to Teddy. As she worked with him, his mind seemed to come alive. The more she encouraged him, the faster he responded. By the end of the year, Teddy had become one of the smartest children in the class and, despite her lie that she would love all the children the same, Teddy became one her \

The name of the race comes from the name of an Alaska gold rush town, Iditarod. It means \

More than sixty sled teams begin the race in Anchorage. When the teams reach the outskirts of town, they get a taste of Alaska's wilderness. I received a request from Hawaii. A vision-harmed woman whose husband was sensitive to dog hair, had written to our centre with the hope that we had an allergy-free (不引起过敏的) guide-dog.

\of cake,\I thought. The standard poodle (狮子狗), a trainable working dog with tightly curled furs, was probably the most suitable breed. Although our centre bred and used Labradors (拉布拉多狗) , I did not anticipate any difficulties in finding a suitable poodle.

It turned out that reality never comes along with my best hopes. In desperation, I decided to cross-breed a standard poodle with one of our best-producing Labradors. The mating was successful, but it produced only three puppies. We sent coat of each puppy to the Hawaiian couple and the husband found one that was allergy-free. At last we were getting somewhere, but a big job lay ahead. The puppy had to grow up and prove suitable for guiding before it went to be compatible with the vision-impaired client. We had a long way to go.

With a three to six-month waiting list for people wishing to get our puppies, I was sure that we would have no problem placing our three new crossbred puppies with a family. But I was

23

wrong again. It seemed that no one wanted a crossbred puppy and the customers only have their eyes laid on pure breeds regarding half-blooded something as a inferior kind. Time was running out as the puppies needed to be placed in homes and socialize. Otherwise they would miss the chance to become guide dogs. In order to attract people to adopt the puppies, I stopped calling them \

During the weeks that followed, our centre was inundated with calls from excited people. The publicity of the new designer dogs went national, and then international. With such an overwhelming response, I knew we were successful and I continued training sultan, the original non-allergy puppy. He eventually went to Hawaii, amid intense coverage, where as the world's first Labradoodle, he bonded beautifully with his new owner and her allergic husband. 65. Why did the author cross-breed a new kind of dog?

A. Because he works with dogs and tries to do research on dogs. B. Because he failed to find a suitable dog for the client in Hawaii. C. Because he wanted to produce a kind of designer dog. D. Because the cross-breeds are all proved to be allergy-free

66. Why weren't customers interested in the three new puppies at beginning? A. Because they were designed mainly for vision-impaired customers. B. Because customers don't believe they can work well as guide dogs. C. Because they look down upon cross-bred dogs.

D. Because these dogs are too expensive and hard to raise. 67. How did the author do to change the customers' attitude? A. He produced a kind of designer dog. B. He invited media to report on the dogs. C. He made up a new name for the dogs.

D. He asked the Hawaii couple to adopt one dog as an example.

68. Which of the following statements is NOT TRUE according to the passage? A. The Hawaii couple need a trained guide dog which is allergy-free B. All puppies had to be trained before they became guide dogs.

C. If puppies can't have contact with people they will become allergic dogs. D. Sultan finally worked well with the Hawaii couple.

A surprising case of exploitation (剥削) of the poor has surfaced in India after the authorities cracked down on a gang of ―blood-suckers‖ who stole blood from helpless victim locked in a smelly basement. ―Five people have been arrested in connection with this ring which may have been connected to local hospitals and a local university,‖ announced the head of police, who also added that some of the victims had been imprisoned by the gang for nearly three years.

Acting on a tip-off, the police attacked a house in Gorakhpur. There they found 17 persons who were described as having been ―reduced to skeletons‖. They were too weak to stand and had

All the gang members used to work as lab technicians. D. Some hospitals and a university were involved in this case.

66. What was the gang members accused of?

A. The exploitation of the poor. B. Illegal imprisonment and attempted murder. C. Escaping from the authorities D. Stealing blood from a lot of poor Indians.

opportunities to living on the street or in difficult circumstances. Over the past nine years, Street Kids International (S.K.I.) has been working with partner organizations in Africa, Latin America and India to support the economic lives of street children. The purpose of this paper is to share some of the lessons S.K.I. and our partner organizations have learned. Background Typically, children end up on the streets not due to a single cause, but to a combination of factors: a lack of adequately funded schools, the demand for income at home and so on. The street may be attractive to children as a place to find adventurous play and money. However, it is also a place where some children are exposed, with little or no protection, to exploitative employment, urban crime. Street Business Partnerships S.K.I. has worked with partner organizations in Latin America, Africa and India to develop innovative opportunities for street children to earn income. ? The S.K.I. Bicycle Courier Service first started in the Sudan. Participants in this enterprise were supplied with bicycles, which they used to deliver parcels and messages, but they were required to pay for it gradually from their wages. ? The Youth Skills Enterprise initiative in Zambia is a joint program with the Red Cross Society. Street Youths are supported to start their own small business through business training, life skills training and access to credit. Lessons learned The following lessons have emerged from the programs that S.K.I. and partner organizations have created. It is critical for all loans to be linked to training programs that include the development of basic business and life skills. Small loans are provided initially for purchasing fixed assets such as bicycles, shoe shining kits. All S.K.I. programs have charged interest on the loans, primarily to get the business runners used to the concept of paying interest on borrowed money. Generally the rates have been modest.
