Snow Flower and the Secret Fan is a 2005 novel by Lisa See set in nineteenth century China. In her introduction to the novel, See writes that Lily, the narrator, was born in 1823 — "the third year of Emperor Daoguang's reign".

The book mainly talks about the two girls’ friendship. In the 19th century in a small village in Hunan, there were two girls Lily and Snow flower. Lily was a famer’s daughter, but Snow flower was born in a rich family. Because of their destiny. they became Laotong (a sworn sister for life) when they were 7 years old. They played together and shared their thoughts with each other.

As they grew up they experienced marriage and as mother’s happiness and sadness .Lily married to a rich man because of her small feet. But Snow flower married to a butcher. They communicated with each other though a special language nvshu that was written on the fan to shared their joys ,mourned their childhood and kept their hopes alive.

Why did they write their words on the fan ? Because there was a custom that young women couldn’t go to see their previous friends without their husbands’ mothers’ permission . So that Lily and Snow flower couldn’t meet very often. And nvshu is a secret language between women. The men cannot read .

But because of the different destinies ,the barrier came between them. That made their relationship face the trial. Fortunately, the misunderstanding was solved at last, before Snow flower’s death. Finally, they understood the real meanings of that white fan.

My impression of the book the deep part is foot-binding.

Foot binding is a kind of adornment characteristic of the feudal society of China. The specific approach is to use a narrow bag, the women's ankle tightly tie, making musculoskeletal abnormal condition, foot form tiny buckling, to meet the aesthetic. In the era of foot-binding, the vast majority of women from about four or five years old began to foot-binding, until adulthood, the bones to finalize the design, can ~ cloth belt loose; Also has the life bound up, until the day of old.
