A Teddy Bear

Can you bear it? The famous teddy bear is more than 100 years old, and got its name from a United States president.

In 1902, President Theodore “Teddy” Roosevelt took a trip to the American South to help work out a land disagreement between Mississippi and Louisiana. While there, the president went hunting for bears.

Days passed with no luck for the president, but lots of good luck for the bears. Finally, his guides captured (捕获) a bear and offered to let the president shoot it, so he wouldn't have to go home empty-handed.

Roosevelt flatly (断然地) refused. He thought it would be unfair and cruel. When word of the president’s decision got out, a cartoonist for The Washington Star newspaper drew a picture of the bear and Roosevelt holding up his hand to say “No”. The cartoon was seen all over the country, making the president, who was already popular, a hero.

Meanwhile (同时), the owner of a small store in New York asked his wife to make a toy bear for sale. He displayed it in his window with a copy of the cartoon and a sign that said, “Teddy’s Bear.”

That bear, and many others like it, sold big, especially after President Roosevelt gave his official permission for his name to be used. Finally, the letter “s” was dropped and Teddy’s Bear became simply the teddy bear.

So the bear that you've slept with is really a part of the US history. 1. According to the text, what made Theodore Rossevelt a hero?

Located in the North Atlantic Ocean, Iceland is Europe's westernmost country, with the most northerly capital city in the world. Viking explorers moved here from northern Europe in 930 A.D. The country's national language can still be traced to the one spoken by the Vikings over 1,000 years ago. Despite its small size, there are many reasons to visit this country.

Most visitors' first port (港口城市) of call is the country's capital, Reykjavik, a small and clean city known for its colorful and stylish architecture. In 2000, Reykjavik was awarded the title of Europe's City of Culture, thanks to its impressive art and museum scenes, arid lively nightlife.

The good news for visitors is that Iceland's temperatures are fairly mild (温和的), even in the winter when they stay at around four degrees. During winter months, nights are long. In summer, the country gets almost 22 hours of daylight, and native Icelanders and visitors alike enjoy partying outdoors until dawn.

Iceland is one of the most volcanically active nations in the world, and there are a number of hot springs around the island. One of Iceland's most popular hot springs is the Blue Lagoon, a huge lake of bright blue seawater just outside Reykjavik. Surrounded by volcanoes, the Blue Lagoon receives more than 300,000 visitors a year. Most of the inner part of Iceland is accessible only by truck or other vehicle. Nevertheless, there is a range of outdoor activities to enjoy along the coasts. One of Iceland's most popular attractions is caving. Exploring Iceland's unusual lava (火山岩) caves, most of which formed more than 10,000 years ago, requires only basic caving knowledge and equipment. Ice caves, however, are more challenging and require special clothes and hiking tools. The best-known ice caves are in Vatnajokull. And finally, no trip m Iceland would be complete without a visit to the Golden Circle. The mid-Atlantic fault that runs through Iceland is pulling the island apart. Nowhere is this more obvious than in the Thingvellir Valley, where the land is actually separating and the stony ground under your feet frequently moves. Hold on while you hike!

1. What do we know about Iceland?

4

A. It has cold winters.

B. It is situated in the northeast of Europe.

C. The first settlers lived there over 1,000 years ago.

D. People there can get over 20 hours of daylight most of the time. 2. In Reykjavik people can .

A. see beautiful buildings B. relax in the Blue Lagon

C. explore ice caves D. experience the big city's busy life 3. According to the text, the ice eaves in Iceland . A. formed 1,000 years ago B. are situated in the inner part

C. attracted over 300,000 visitors a year D. are more difficult to explore than lava caves 4. What can we learn from the text?

A. Thingvellir Valley is a dangerous place to tour. B. A visit to the Golden Circle is a must in Iceland. C. Vatnaj6kull is a good place to enjoy nightlife. D. People likes partying in the Blue Lagoon.

Astronaut Scott Kelly has been living on the International Space Station (ISS)

6

since March 28, 2015. And just like any other home, the ISS requires some housekeeping, in the form of regular work and repairs.

That is why Kelly and his partner Kjell Lindgren performed activities, outside the station on Wednesday. The operation began at 8:03 AM and lasted for more than seven hours. It was the first spacewalk for both men.

The ISS has been in continual use for 15 years, and has hosted over 200 people, including astronauts and private tourists. During their activities, Kelly and Lindgren did basic electrical work, such as attaching new wires that will provide power to docking ports (接轨舱门) on the station. The ports will be used when other people arrive at the ISS in 2017. Also, the two astronauts fixed a thermal (热的) cover on a key scientific instrument on the station to protect it from the severe temperatures of space.

As the more senior astronaut, Kelly led the spacewalk. However, Lindgren dealt with some of the more challenging parts of the job as he has longer arms than Kelly. During a spacewalk, the simplest work becomes a difficult task. Kelly and Lindgren spent months training and practicing for the operation. The preparation began in NASA's Neutral Buoyancy Lab (NBL). Here astronauts are made to work in an environment similar to the one outside the space station~

Even getting the space suits ready can take days. While each suit is built to fit perfectly on the astronaut who will wear it, adjustments (调整) need to be made fight up to the time when the spacewalk begins. The adjustments address any changes in the astronauts' bodies that have occurred as a result of being in a gravity-free environment.

1. Kelly and Lindgren took the spacewalk just to

A. clean up the ISS B. carry out a scientific experiment C. test their new space suits D. keep the ISS in good condition 2. Why did Kjell Lindgren do more challenging work than Kelly during the spacewalk?

A. He had physical advantages. B. He was the leader of the group.

C. His space suit was more comfortable. D. His experience of spacewalking was longer.

3. The underlined word \ A. focus on B. record C. deal with D. direct

To drive out your Back Pain

Is your back bothering you, and are you wondering how to get rid of your hack pain? If the phrase \Ouch, my back!\is a regular part of your life, you're not alone: 65 million Americans suffer from back pain. 1. 1. Stand Better

Standing for long periods can be stressful on your lower back. If you have to stand for work, try placing one foot on a stool or other low objects. 2. This will help take the pressure off your lower back. Wearing cushioned shoes or standing on a thick rubber mat can also help relieve pressure when you have to stand for long hours.

2. Start Exercise Gradually

3. But if you’ve been inactive for a while, start slowly. Begin with a low-impact exercise such as walking, stationary biking, or swimming for about 30 minutes a day. Adding gentle stretching or yoga may also help your muscles. 3. Sit Comfortably

If your job requires you to sit for long periods, make sure your chair has a straight back, an adjustable seat, and armrests. 4. If you need extra support, place a rolled towel behind the lower part of your back. Resting your feet on a low stool can also help ease back pain when sitting. 4. Choose the Best Sleep Position

Sleeping on your side is the most common sleeping position. Placing a small pillow between your knees helps keep the back in a good position. If you must sleep on your back, try using a pillow under your knees. Avoid sleeping on your stomach, as this can make back pain worse. 5.5.

Carrying extra weight on your body means more work for your lower back muscles. This is especially true if the extra pounds are around your waist.
