The Donkey Mobile Library

It is a bright morning in the Ethiopian countryside. Yohannes walks beside a pair of donkeys that are pulling a two-wheeled cart. They arrive at the agricultural town of Awassa where Yohannes opens the sides of the cart to display, not the usual vegetables or tools, but children’s books. This is the Donkey Mobile Library, the first of its kind in Ethiopia and one of only a few in the world.

Yohannes was born in Ethiopia, North Africa, but trained to be a librarian in the USA and returned to Ethiopia years ago. The cart is full of picture books donated by American libraries, teachers and school children.

Yohannes arranges small painted benches in the shade of the trees, and suddenly Ethiopian children come shouting and racing down every road and path. It’s mobile library day! They circle the bookshelves with great excitement. Until the Donkey Mobile Library began its regular two-monthly visits, many of these children had never seen a book.

“Without books, education is very dull, like food without salt. You can survive but

you can’t really come alive,” says Yohannes. “The ability to read is the basis for greater productivity, better health and longer life. Even though the children lack material goods, with books they can imagine a world of possibilities.”

Yohannes first worked in the children’s section of the main library in America. Surrounded by books he had never seen before, he realized how joyful and imaginative children’s literature is. He says, “I always thought of Ethiopia. But how could I bring children’s books to my home country when it had almost no libraries to keep the books in?”

He contacted Jane Kurtz, a writer born in America but brought up in Ethiopia, and together they created the Donkey Mobile Library. The children say that the Library has given them ideas about what they might do in the future. A child called Dareje wants to be a scientist and find a cure for life-threatening diseases. An eleven year-old girl, Fikerte, wants to do research about the moon and discover new facts about outer space. Tamrat, aged 10, comes every time.

“What brings you back here time and time again?” the librarian asks him. “The stories,” Tamrat replies instantly.

Trees should only be pruned (修剪) when there is a good and clear reason for doing so and, the number of such reasons is small. Pruning involves the cutting away of overgrown and unwanted branches, and the inexperienced gardener can be encouraged by the thought that more damage results from doing it unnecessarily than from leaving the tree to grow in its own way.

First, pruning may be done to make sure that trees have desired shape or size. The object may be to get a tree of the right height, and at the same time to help the growth of small side branches, which will thicken its appearance or give it a special shape. Secondly, pruning may be done to make the tree healthier. You may cut out diseased or dead wood, or branches that are rubbing against each other and thus cause wounds. The health of a tree may be encouraged by removing branches that are blocking up the center and so preventing the free movement of air.

One result of pruning is that an open wound is left on the tree and this provides an easy entry for disease, but it is a wound that will heal (愈合). Often there is a race between the healing and the disease as to whether the tree will live or die, so that there is a period when the tree is at risk. It should be the aim of every gardener to reduce that risk of death as far as possible. It is important to make the area, which has been pruned, smooth and clean, for healing will be slowed down by roughness. You should allow the cut surface to dry for a few hours and then paint it with one of the materials available from garden shops produced especially for this purpose. Pruning is usually done in winter, for then you can see the shape of the tree clearly without interference (妨碍) from the leaves and also it is very unlikely that the cuts you make will bleed. If this does happen, it is, of course, impossible to paint them properly. 39. Why should pruning be done?

A. To make the tree grow taller. B. To improve the shape of the tree. C. To get rid of the small branches. D. To make the small branches thicker. 40. Trees become unhealthy if the gardener _________. .

A. helps a wound to dry. B. covers a rough surface.

C. damages some of the small side branches.

D. allows too many branches to grow in the middle. 41. Why is a special material painted on the tree?

A. To help a wound to dry. B. To cover a rough surface. C. To prevent disease entering a wound. D. To make a wound smooth. 42. The writer wrote this passage___________

A. to introduce some common knowledge of pruning. B. to discuss different methods of pruning.

C. to explain how trees develop disease.

D. to give practical instruction for pruning a tree.

People born in the winter are more likely to suffer mental health disorders, according to a recent study carried out by researchers at Vanderbilt University in Tennessee.

Researchers raised baby mice from birth to weaning(断奶) in either “summer” light cycles of 16 hours of light and eight hours of dark or “winter” cycles of eight hours of light and 16 hours of dark. A third group experienced 12 hours of light and 12 hours of dark a day,

Then half the winter mice stayed in a winter cycle, while half switched to a summer schedule. The summer mice were similarly split. The mice raised in equal periods of light and dark were split into three groups, one of which stayed on the 12-hour schedule, one of which joined the winter group, and one of which joined the summer subset.

After 28 days, it turns out the summer-born mice behaved the same whether they stayed on the summer cycle or switched to winter. But among the winter-born mice, those stayed in winter kept their previous schedule, while those that switched to summer stayed active for an extra hour and a half, which indicates that mice born and weaned in a winter light cycle showed dramatic disruptions in their biological clocks.

The finding is the first of its kind in mammals, and it could explain why people born in the winter are at higher risk for mental health disorders including bipolar depression, schizophrenia and seasonal affective disorder.

“We know that the biological clock regulates mood in humans,” said study researcher McMahon. “If an imprinting mechanism(运行机制)similar to the one that we found in mice operates in humans, then it could not only have an effect on a number of behavioral disorders, but also have a more general effect on personality.” 43. How many groups of mice are there finally in all in the experiment?

A. four B. five C. six D. seven 44. What's the main idea of the text?

A. The biological clock regulates mood in humans.

B. people born in the winter are at higher risk for physical health disorders. C. Being born in the winter has a negative effect on people's mental health. D. The length of light will influence the behavior of the mice.

45. The underlined word \ ? (Line 2, Paragraph3) A. divided B. torn C. hit D. ended

46. Which group of mice has changed their behavior after the experiment? A. The group born in the winter and staying in the winter. B. The group born in the winter and switching to the summer. C. The group born in the summer and staying in the summer. D. The group born in the summer and switching to the winter. 47. Who is the appropriate reader of the passage? A. a job hunter B. a student in the university

C. a newly-married couple D. an experienced dentist

“Hey, Jenna, do you think we’ll still be friends when we’re eighty-two?” I asked my friend. It was clear that she was wondering where I had come up with such a question. Losing Jenna would be like losing a very close sister. We hung out together. We gave each other advice. “Of course, we’ll still be friends when we’re eighty-two.” Jenna announced loudly.

The next year, in the fourth grade, we met Jamie. The three of us soon became close friends. We played together almost every day. I thought even time couldn’t pull us apart, but I was sadly mistaken.

The three of us started fighting a lot. Before Christmas, we had a really big fight, and Jamie and Jenna were against me, both saying I was bossy. I felt helpless and lonely. I thought Christmas would be horrible!

I was surprised when Jenna came to my house and gave me an awesome Christmas card she had made for me. I was so sure that she was still disappointed with me.

“Wow,” I said, breaking the silence as we stood on either side of my front door. “Thanks.”

“Okay…well…I have to go,” she said softly.

“Okay. See you later then…” and I closed the door. “Who was that at the door?” my mum asked.

The card started off with “Merry Christmas”, but then it said, “I am so glad we’re friends. I am sorry about what I said when we were fighting. A fight won’t stop us from being friends. Besides, we said we were going to be friends even when we’re eight-two.”

I stopped reading and started laughing. I couldn’t believe I had forgotten what she said that day in her back yard. I couldn’t believe I had been so selfish in trying to get even and making my friends feel sorry for me that I had forgotten about real friendship. 48. How would the author and Jenna get along with each other after Christmas? A. They would be close friends again. B. They would not speak to each other. C. They would lose touch with each other. D. They would go on fighting with each other.

49. The underlined sentence “I was bossy” in the fourth paragraph means “_________”. A.I looked like a bossB.I acted as a boss C.I was fond of giving orders D.I was fond of fighting

50. The author was delighted when she read the card from Jenna because _________. A. what Jenna wrote was funny. B. Jenna would be her friend again. C. she was happy about the coming Christmas. D. she was happy to receive a Christmas card.

Each and every one of us is responsible for the greenhouse gases we give out in our daily actions and choices. Therefore, combating climate change is going to take the combined efforts of everyone on the planet.

The average household carbon footprint in China is 2.41 tons of carbon dioxide annually. That's enough to fill half an Olympic swimming pool.

Surprised? Well, here's how you can work to reduce it:

1. Take showers rather than baths and reduce your shower time by two minutes. This will save water and give you an extra two minutes in bed.

2. Don't purchase unnecessary clothes, and be careful about the materials you buy. Wool and cotton have a really high greenhouse gas impact. Manmade fibers are a better

choice.

3. Try to buy high-quality, long-lasting products even though they _________. A laptop is more efficient than a desktop, and a small screen TV is better than a big flat-screen.

4. Only turn the water heater on when necessary, and adjust temperature controls to avoid overheating. Put a lid on a pan when boiling water.

5. When using the washing machine, be sure there's a full load and turn the temperature down if it's not really dirty.

6. The greediest home device along with the washing machine is the fridge. Make sure it's as efficient as possible by keeping it out of direct sunlight and away from the oven or heater. Don't put food in when it's still warm.

7. Only buy the amount of food you need and if there are leftovers, get creative. For instance, make them into a soup. Ask to take food home from restaurants if there's some left, but remember to take your own container to avoid using a disposable carton.

56. How does the author introduce the topic of the text? (no more than 5 words) 57. Fill in the blank in Paragraph 6 with proper words. (no more than 5 words) 58. Why do we keep the fridge out of direct sunlight? (no more than 5 words) 59. What does the author say about leftovers? (no more than 14 words) 60. What is the main idea of the text? (no more than 6 words)

Recently, a survey on school buses has been conducted on a website. As can be seen from the pie chart, only 23.53% of the interviewees trust school buses, while 60.52% of them show their distrust. And still, 15.95% of them are not clear about it.

Of those who show their disbelief, 35.2% are afraid of abandoned vehicles being used and 24.3% worry that school buses will be overloaded, which may be the main cause of serious traffic accidents. About 21.30% of them worry that the school buses are not equipped with safety equipment like safety belts. Another 18.7% blame drivers for breaking the speed limit.

I think effective measures should be taken to ensure the safety of students. More money should be invested to improve the quality of school buses. Meanwhile, all the school buses should be examined regularly.
