When I was a kid, I found a book about a little girl whose grandma had passed away. Before falling asleep one night, I asked my grandmother to read it to me. When she finished reading, I looked into her light blue eyes.

“Grandma,” I asked, “will you ever die?” “Unfortunately, I will,” she said. “Do all people have to die?” I asked. “Yes,” she answered. “Why?” I asked.

“How could you enjoy every second of life if you knew you could live it forever? You never know how much you love something until you lose it.” she replied, I gave her a kiss on the cheek, telling her that I would love her forever.

The next night I sat on my parents’ bed watching TV with them. The phone rang. My dad answered it. I saw the smile on his face disappear. Then he looked at my mom and me. He stared at us for a long time. Then he said, “Grandma is gone. She had a heart attack. It was too late when people found her.”

I then sat there still for the next few minutes. I had never lost anyone before in my life. I didn’t know what to do. All that ran through my head was that I was never going to see her again. At that moment, I loved my grandma more than I ever had before. I thought of everything she had done for me.

Life changes though we don’t expect it to. I never knew I would remember forever what my grandma said that night. Of course I am upset when people die, but missing them makes me love them more every second. No one can live forever, so we should try to live every second to the fullest.

My friend Jason and I wanted to do something to help other people who are less fortunate and help us grow at the same time. After we decided that we would volunteer in Nepal, I did some research on the Internet and I found Volunteer Nepal and felt strongly that it was the right choice for us.

While making our plans, Jason and I realized that others might like the opportunity to be a part of our experience. So before leaving for Nepal, we asked the people we knew whether they would be interested in donating (捐赠) cash or goods to Nepal Orphans (孤儿)

Home.

One friend, whose family owns a chain called Drake Supermarket, told others about it. His effort paid off. We received donations that filled 29 boxes with sporting goods, toys, coloring books, pencils, children’s books, and more. The boxes were later taken to Drake’s warehouse where I prepared them for shipment. Drake agreed to ship them to Nepal for free.

The boxes had arrived at the Volunteer House when we arrived there. The next day, Jason and I unpacked the boxes. The children from the orphanages lined up and were each able to choose a gift. This process took about an hour, but the looks on their faces and the happiness that we saw in their eyes made it one of the best days of our life.

We visited the orphanages there in the following days. Being with the children at the orphanages was both sad and wonderful. George Washington was born on February 22, 1732. Abraham Lincoln was born on February 12, 1809. This year, the holiday which has come to be known as Presidents’ Day falls on February 20 — right between their birthdays. So many people think the holiday is meant to celebrate both of their birthdays.

But it is wrong. Since 1968, the official name of this holiday has been Washington’s Birthday. Washington’s Birthday first became an official national holiday in 1885. But it had been celebrated as an unofficial holiday since the late 1700s, when he was still America’s President. And up until 1971, it was celebrated on his actual birthday.

When the celebration of Washington’s Birthday was officially moved to the third Monday in February, 1971, a lot of people just thought that it was a celebration of Lincoln’s birthday as well. That’s why it has come to be known as Presidents’ Day.

Even though Lincoln’s birthday has never been a national holiday, some states made his birthday a holiday soon after he died in 1865.

Nowadays, on Presidents’ Day, there are special events marking Washington’s Birthday at Mount Vernon, the house in Northern Virginia where he lived much of his adult life. And people also hold a parade in his honor. They also dance a Virginia line dance. Students always hold a “Favorite Presidents Election” in their classroom.

When George Washington became President in 1789, America was just 13 years old. There was no presidential history to guide him. And there was no map laying out the road ahead of him. But President Washington helped establish a nation that has now survived for more than 200 years. That is something worth celebrating.

Geography once played a big role in how we chose our friends, but that is changing fast. In the past, it could be difficult to keep up a relationship with someone from the next town, not to mention someone from a different state or country. These days the Internet has made it easier than ever to meet friends online, whether those friends live right down the street or halfway around the world.

In fact this ability to bring together different people from different walks of life is one of the great advantages of the Internet. If you have always wanted to meet friends online from around the world, all you need to do is log on and search. The process of meeting new friends online can be a fun new adventure, and many people have found a great number of friends from all over the world using the power of the Internet.

In many ways the ability to meet friends online is an extension (延伸) of the pen pals we used to have as kids. Back then we would wait patiently by the mailbox for those pen pal letters to arrive. And on the other side of the world, our special friends would anticipate the same kind of thing to happen. The Internet age has taken that pen pal age to a wholly new

level, making it easier than ever to meet friends. With just a click of a mouse you can meet friends online from faraway lands, sharing stories and experiences or just spending some time chatting together.

A number of websites have made it even easier to meet friends, and those with an interest in this can definitely check those websites out. These specialized websites allow people from around the world to quickly and easily meet friends online with just a click of a mouse.

I’m Grace, 13 years old and in seventh grade in Florida. This school year has been normal. However, my family and I spent my sixth-grade year driving all over Europe, seeing amazing places, meeting all kinds of people, and getting closer as a family in the process.

When my family decided to move to Europe, we were excited. But we had a problem. We couldn’t find a car that had enough space to work for our five-member family, so my dad decided he’d just make one. No matter where we were, our new home took some getting used to (花时间适应). I had to leave a lot of my stuff (物品) behind because so little of it would fit into my tiny new room. We had to be careful to save our water. And we were doing home-school, which worked out great.

No matter what, I made sure to look out of my window every morning, because the view was different every day — England, then France, Italy, Greece ... each special in its own way. In country after country, we toured around and tried to pick up little bits of the local language, but that didn’t help us much. Luckily we kept finding people who knew some English. Everywhere we went, we saw the most amazing things. I love reading about places in my textbooks and then getting out of our vehicle to look right at them. I can’t pick a favorite spot, because whichever one we were at seemed to be the best at the time.

After our trip ended, we moved to Florida. But it makes me happy that my family had this great year-long experience together. I’m thankful for that.

He is the one you can always turn to when you’re in a fix. He knows when you’re tired, upset or unwell. He is the companion who’s always pleased to see you. Sound familiar? Only if you have a dog.

Although we’re used to the old saying about man’s best friend, the intimacy (密切) between an animal lover and their pet could run far deeper than we realized. In many cases, they are a companion we value even more than our spouse (配偶).

According to a study, about 45 percent of British dog owners believe their pet knows when they are happy and sad and can sense when they are tired or unwell. Almost a third of those questioned said their dog was a much better listener than their spouse. 41 percent of dog owners believe their pet loves them more than their human friends, other half and 24 percent say they would rather spend quality time with their dog than their spouse.

Perhaps there’s a good reason for that. Unlike many people, pets can be relied on not to

tell a secret, which could explain why almost one in ten of those surveyed admitted to trusting their dog with a secret that they would not dare to tell even their closest human friend.

Chris Laurence, who is veterinary director of the Dogs Trust, said, “Dogs are always responsive (响应的).If you walk up to a dog and touch it, it will surely purr. If you tickle your dog behind_the_ears,_it_will_wag_its_tail. But humans aren’t quite like that.”

TV vet Emma Milne said, “The joy and companionship our dogs bring to our lives is unquestionable and it is no wonder that many consider them to be man’s best friend.” 语篇解读:人们都喜欢养宠物狗,这是为什么呢?

29.The writer is most probably explaining ________. A.why you need close friends B.why your dog can keep a secret C.why your dog is your best friend D.why you don’t like your spouse

30.We can know from the study that about 45 percent of British dog owners ________. A.love their dog more than their spouse

B.think their dog can sense their happiness and sadness C.think their spouse loves their dog better

D.would rather spend quality time with their dog than their spouse

解析:选B 细节理解题。根据第三段的“According to a study, about 45 percent of British dog owners believe their pet knows when they are happy and sad”可知应选B。

31.According to Paragraph 4, dog owners love their dog so much because ________. A.their dog knows how to please them B.they have no close human friends C.they can share their secrets with their dog D.their dog can be relied on to do almost anything

解析:选C 细节理解题。根据第四段的“Unlike many people, pets can be relied on not to tell a secret ...”可知这一段主要是讲人们可以跟他们的宠物狗分享秘密而不用担心它们会把秘密泄露出去,所以选C。

32.The examples given by Chris Laurence in the underlined sentences in Paragraph 5 are to show that ________.

A.dogs will always respond to you

B.dogs will never leave you alone C.dogs like their ears being touched D.dogs like purring when you touch them

解析:选 A 推理判断题。画线句子中的两个例子主要是为了说明前面提到的Dogs are always responsive,所以选A。

Great Changes in My Hometown

Great changes have taken place in my hometown in the past ten years.

Ten years ago, my hometown was just a small, old and poor village. Most people were farmers. There were few factories. The people didn’t have enough food to eat and they wore old clothes. Many of the families lived a hard life.

Because of our country’s new policy, more and more people are becoming richer and richer now. The people have found a lot of ways of making money and many of them have moved into the newly-built departments. Roads are wide and clean and various of flowers and trees are planted along the roads. People can take buses or even drive their private cars to work. Many people have cell- phones and personal computers. People’s living conditions have been improved a lot.

As a member of our society, I feel proud of these changes. I hope my hometown will become more and more beautiful.

Old age may not sound exciting. But recent findings offer good news for older people and for people worried about getting older. Researchers found that people become happier and experience less worry after they reach the age of 50. In fact, they say by the age of 85, people are happier with their life than they were when they were 18 years old.

The findings came from a survey of more than 340,000 adults in the United States. The Gallup Organization questioned them by telephone in 2008. At that time, the people were between the ages of 18 and 85. The researchers asked questions about emotions like happiness, sadness and worry. They also asked about mental or emotional stress.

Arthur Stone in the Department of Psychiatry and Behavioral Science at Stony

Brook University in New York led the study. His team found that levels of stress were highest among adults between the ages of 24 and 25. The findings showed that stress levels dropped sharply after people reached their fifties.

The study also showed that men and women have similar feeling patterns as they grow older. However, women at all ages reported more sadness, stress and worry than men.

Researchers say they do not know why happiness increases as people get older. One theory is that, as people grow older, they grow more thankful for what they have and have better control of their feelings. They also spend less time thinking about bad experiences.

Professor Stone says the emotional patterns could be linked to changes in how people see the world, or maybe even changes in brain chemistry.

The researchers also considered possible influences like having young children, being unemployed or being single. But they found that influences like these did not affect the levels of happiness and well-being related to age.

It’s summertime and living should be easy, with a chance to cool off in swimming pools, rivers, lakes and the ocean. However, without good adult supervision (监管), fun-filled water activities can turn deadly for kids. Children should never swim unattended, even if they’re good at swimming. Although crowded public pools with lifeguards (救生员) on duty provide a reasonable level of safety, it’s always wise to know where your children are, as drownings can and do occur before a lifeguard recognizes the problem.

A supervising adult should scan the pool every 10 seconds and be within 20 seconds of reaching the pool. If a child is missing, don’t waste time looking around the house or neighborhood. Go directly to the pool. The quicker you get the child out, the better the survival rate with little brain damage. To ensure (确保) the safety of pools, remove all toys, empty the pool and turn it upside down.

In-ground and large pools require particular supervision. Some neighborhood kids might come in secretly when you’re away. To improve swimming pool safety, have drains checked for cracks and teach kids to stay away from their suction. You also need to be smart about where you and your kids swim. Know how deep the water is and avoid isolated swimming spots, as you need someone to hear you if you call for help.

For all water activities, safety should always come first. If you’re boating, make sure there are life jackets or PFDs (Personal Flotation Devices) for each person onboard. Specific PFDs are designed for activities like boogie boarding, kite surfing, paddle boarding and water-skiing and each has different requirements. Every boat must be equipped with enough PFDs to fit the group and suit their activities. As children grow, buy larger PFDs just as you buy new clothes and shoes.

Playing in the water should be fun and safe for everyone.

语篇解读:夏天来临,很多父母和孩子都喜欢到游泳池、河里以及海边游泳,殊不知安全和玩乐同等重要,即使有救生人员在旁,父母们也不能掉以轻心。

33.According to Paragraph 1, which of the following is NOT true? A.People usually like to cool off in the water during summertime. B.Children shouldn’t swim without good adult supervision.

C.Children shouldn’t swim alone even if they’re skilled in the water. D.Parents can be relaxed if lifeguards are on duty.

解析:选D 细节理解题。根据第一段最后一句可知即使有救生员在场,父母也不能掉以轻心,故选D。

34.What comes first if a child is missing in a swimming pool? A.The speed of saving the child. B.The skills of saving the child. C.The chances of saving the child. D.The attitude of saving the child.
