Fourteen may seem a young age to become a cultural ambassador(文化大使). However, a group of 14-year-olds in the US are working toward that purpose. In the activity, they are finding that kids there like some of the same video games, music and sports as they do. “The girls like boys and soccer, just like us, ”said Ungrid Pfefferle. “ They have PlayStations, ”said Eduardo Jaramillo. “I didn’t know that”.

War Kids Relief (WKR)is a children’s culture connection program, one that raises money to help kids worldwide. Groups of 12-to-15-year-olds in three American cities-----Northfield, Washington, DC, and New York are matched（配对）with kids in the same age group in three Iraqi cities. Their relationships begin with writing letters.

On a recent Saturday afternoon, the 28 Northfield teenagers gathered for a meeting at the city’s library. Gunnar Swanson, a soldier who fought in the Iraq War, told a few stories about how he connected with Iraqi kids. He said those experiences were some of the happiest parts of being a soldier.

Most of the Northfield group was paired with teenagers in Suleimanya, a rich city in northern Iraq. Many children there know some English. When the Northfield kids broke into small groups to share their latest letters, they said things like “He likes hip-hop, too!” and “His favourite movie last year was Batman:The Dark Knight.”
