When she was just 17 years old, Liz crashed into the back of a truck that was waiting to turn in a left turn lane(车道). The crash is a life-changing one for her. Because of the crash, she’s blind in one eye, lost her sense of smell, lost some of her hearing, lost the ability to create tears, and she cannot fall asleep naturally.
“Initially, I thought I would not be defeated but clearly I was completely wrong. Apart from the medical problems, the hardest part about my life after the car accident was the fact that I was alone.” Liz said, “Everyone was away at college, I wasn’t. I couldn’t drive, couldn’t go to college. My friends who used to hang around with me were there for me at first, but after a while they stopped coming by.”
“I looked up on her Facebook page, and she said on there: Can anybody please hang out with me today? I don’t have any friends.” recalled Liz’ mother, Betty.
In time, Liz and her mother teamed up with the US Department of Transportation’s National Highway Traffic Safety Administration to make a video. They want to get the point across that texting and driving can have life-transforming consequences.
In the video Liz appealed to drivers not to text and drive. She admitted she was checking and sending messages via her phone when she crashed her car into the back of the truck.
“Don’t text your loved ones when you know they’re driving,” said Liz’ mother. “It can change their lives forever.”

On Friday, March 13, 28-year-old Genovese was returning home from work. Approaching her apartment, she was attacked by a man. Though she repeatedly called for help, none of the people in the neighborhood helped. The attack began at 3:20 am, but it was not until 3:50 am that someone first called the police. This is a most typical example of the bystander effect in psychology.
The term bystander effect refers to the phenomenon in which the greater the number of people present, the less likely people are to help a person in need.
Two major factors contribute to the bystander effect. First, the presence of other people creates a diffusion (分散) of responsibility. With other observers around, individuals (个体) do not feel much pressure to take action, since the responsibility to take action is thought to be shared among those present. The second reason is the need to behave in correct and socially acceptable ways. When other observers fail to react, individuals often take this as a signal that a response is not needed. Researchers have found that onlookers are less likely to act if the situation is ambiguous, where things are often confusing and not so clear.
So what can you do to avoid falling into this trap? Psychologists suggest that simply being aware of this tendency is the greatest way to break the cycle. When you face a situation that requires action, you should understand the bystander effect and consciously (有意识地) take action. But what if you are the person in need of assistance? One often-recommended approach is to single out one person from the crowd. Make eye contact and ask that individual specifically for help. By individualizing your request, it becomes much harder for people to turn you down. 24. The story of Genovese is to show______.

Paperless office was first coined in 1975. Four decades later, we’re still chasing(追逐) the paperless office dream. Take the financial industry for example — it is one of the slower industries to hug digital transformation. Many financial institutions today still send out trade confirmations by mail. I can tell you from first-hand experience that going paperless is by no means impossible. The Centric Digital office is a paperless work environment where all the office operations go digital, which has amazed our business partners.
Actually, companies need to stress the benefits of a digital culture for communications. Going paperless can save time and money. You could say goodbye to costly repairs, office supply orders, wasted employee time and so on. Besides, forbidding paper in the office forces information to be 100% digital, where you can make endless amounts of backups (备份), which easily increase transparency (透明). Not to mention, top talents want to work for digital companies.
You might think the secret to a paperless company is purely technology. Well, not really. Thanks to products like iPads, smartphones, and cloud services, the ability to go paperless is highly accessible. Yet, even with all this technology, companies continue to rely on paper. It’s not because they don’t have access to the technology, but because they’re lacking the policies, organizational structure, and strong desire to change. In order to go paperless, companies need to change the way they think and operate. The decision needs to be made and carried out, and everyone needs to work together to make it.
Yes, the paperless office has been a very long time in the making—but it no longer has to be. With numerous amounts of software, services, apps, and technology available today, the only thing we need to do is make the decision to go paperless and see it through.
27. The practice of going paperless in the financial industry is______.

C. satisfying
D. disgusting

Secrets of top Students
A professor of education who has conducted major studies of top students announced that top grades do not always go to the brightest students. 31 Top students master a few basic principles that others can also learn. Top students study anywhere or everywhere. A top student who is also a top athlete recites biology terms as he works out every day. Another student learns a new word every morning while brushing his teeth. Top students are also well organized. Top students immediately put the day’s notes in different folders(文件夹). 32 . According to one professor, the student who turns in neat work is already on the way to scoring an A. In the classroom context, it is equally important for students to speak up and ask questions. 33 As a student puts it, “Better grades come from better understanding.” Another technique is to do more than the homework. A student says that if her teacher gives five problems, she will undertake ten. In the student’s words, “Part of learning is practising. The more you practise, the more you learn.”
34 It showed that students who discussed homework and problems together, tried different approaches and explained their solutions to one another scored higher than those on their own.
Last but not least, all experts and top students agree that the most important “secret” lies in the contribution by parents. They set high standards for their children and hold them to those standards. 35 They impress the lessons of responsibility on their children, and the children deliver.
A. In other words, study time is always placed above fun. B. The value of studying together was shown in an experiment.

When a student cuts class, fails to prepare for class or do homework, or is unable to answer even simple questions about the topic being studied in class, it is clear that the student is not learning well, and teachers may wonder why. One of the causes might be language anxiety. Language anxiety is a fear occurring when a learner is expected to perform in the foreign language. That is, when a student is asked to
第 7 页(共 7 页) 英语(高考测试卷)
perform in the target language in class, he is likely to become nervous and fail to do it.
The good news is that so far some research has suggested language anxiety can make students focused, get good grades and build up high self-confidence. Despite (尽管) these benefits, most research has also shown a negative (负面的) relationship between language anxiety and performance. The negative kind of anxiety harms learners’ performance in many ways. As time goes by, they will doubt themselves, refuse to join in discussions and try to avoid using the language.
Teachers and researchers might sometimes be able to judge language anxiety through measuring scales (评价量表). There are a number of scales, the best known of which is called the Foreign Language Classroom Anxiety Scale or FLCAS. The FLCAS was developed to measure the specific anxiety reaction of a student to a foreign language situation. However, this is not recommended because researchers consider that language anxiety is observable in class.
To help students to deal more effectively with language anxiety, teachers are advised to allow students to perform differently according to their own abilities. More importantly, teachers ought to provide various opportunities for classroom success in the language. In this way, students can be freed from the pain of severe language anxiety. Gradually they will become more and more confident of their language abilities and eventually experience what it means to succeed in the language classroom.
