I have learned something about myself since I moved from Long Island to Florida three years ago. Even though I own a home in Port St. Lucie just minutes from the ocean, an uncontrollable urge wells up to return to Long Island even as others make their way south. I guess I am a snowbird in reverse (相反). Instead of enjoying Florida’s mild winters, I willingly endure the severe weather on Long Island, the place I called home for 65 years.
I’m like a migratory bird (候鸟) that has lost its sense of timing and direction, my wings flapping against season.
So what makes me fly against the tide of snowbirds? The answer has a lot to do with my reluctance to give up the things that define who I am. Once I hear that the temperature on Long Island has dipped into the range of 40 to 50 degrees, I begin to long for the sight and crackling(噼啪声)sound of a wood fire. I also long for the bright display of colors—first in the fall trees, and then in the lights around homes and at Rockefeller Center. Floridians decorate, too, but can’t create the special feel of a New England winter.
I suppose the biggest reason why I return is to celebrate the holidays with people I haven’t seen for months. What could be better than sitting with family and friends for a Thanksgiving turkey dinner, or watching neighbors’ children excitedly open gifts on Christmas? Even the first snowfall seems special. I especially enjoy seeing a bright red bird settling on a snow-covered branch. (My wife and 1 spend winters at a retirement community in Ridge, and I’m grateful that I don’t have to shovel.)
While these simple pleasures are not unique to Long Island, they are some of the reasons why I come back. Who says you can’t go home?
24. What’s the difference between Florida and Long Island?
A. Weather in Florida is severer. B. Winters in Florida are milder.
C. Migratory birds are rarer in Florida in winter. D. The feel of a New England winter in Florida is intense.
25. What does the underlined word ―reluctance‖ in Paragraph 3 mean? A. Unwillingness. C. Confidence.
B. Expectation. D. Motivation.
26. Which of the following words can best describe the author? A. Imaginative and grateful. C. Homesick and friendly.
B. Pleased and serious. D. Anxious and painful.
27. What’s the author’s purpose in writing the text? A. To describe his dream to be a free bird. B. To express his feeling of missing his hometown. C. To praise the beauty and warmth of his hometown. D. To introduce his busy but enjoyable life after retirement.
C
The sixth mass extinction of life on the Earth is unfolding more quickly than feared, scientists have warned. More than 30 percent of animals with a backbone — fish, birds, amphibians, reptiles and mammals — are declining in both range and population, according to the first comprehensive analysis of these trends.
Around a decade ago, experts feared that a new range wipeout of species was appearing. Today, most agree that it is underway — but the new study suggests that the die-out is already growing fast.
The loss of biodiversity has recently accelerated. Several species of mammals that were relatively safe one or two decades ago are now endangered, including cheetahs, lions and giraffes, the study showed.
There is no mystery as to why: our own ever-expanding species — which has more than doubled in number since 1960 to 7.4 billion — is eating, crowding and polluting its planetary cohabitants out of existence. By comparison, there are as few as 20,000 lions left in the wild, less than 7,000 cheetahs, 500 to 1,000 giant pandas.
The main drivers of wildlife decline are habitat loss, over-consumption, pollution, other species,
disease, as well as hunting in the case of tigers, elephants, rhinos and other large animals prized for their body parts.
Climate change is thought to become a major threat in the coming decades, with some animals — most famously polar bears — already in decline due to rising temperatures and changing weather patterns. 28. What does the underlined word ―it‖ in Paragraph 2 refer to? A. the comprehensive analysis C. the new range of extinction
B. the loss of habitats
D. the expansion of human beings
29. Why has the loss of biodiversity sped up?
A. The mankind’s population is growing fast. B. The air pollution is too severe. C. There are fewer species in larger areas.
D. Man causes wider water pollution.
30. Which is not the main driver of wildlife decline?
A. Outside animals. B. Loss of living areas. C. Various illnesses. D. Lack of water. 31. How is the future of polar bears? A. Promising.
B. Hopeful.
C. Optimistic. D
I was really nervous about English class this year because I was an eleventh grader taking a twelfth grade class. I knew that I wouldn't know anyone in the class, and that scared me a little. But since I didn't know anyone, I had the chance to do something I love almost as much as socializing — people watching.
One of the most interesting girls in the class sat directly behind me. She was always laughing and talking, and she just seemed so happy. She was friendly, too— she was one of the very few people in the class who made any attempt to acknowledge me.
At the end of the year, we were assigned a big project. It was a very open-ended project, where the instructions were basically to read something, then read or watch something else that related to it, and then come up with a class presentation based on what you learned.
The presentations were spread out over the last month of school. The girl behind me presented on one of the very last days. She got up in front of the class, and told how she had read about eating disorders, because she herself had struggled with one. Since it would have been too difficult for her to talk to us about it directly, she and a friend (who had also suffered from an eating disorder) had made a movie, where they
D. Challenging.
interviewed each other about their eating disorders, how they had felt while they were struggling with them, and how they had overcome them. By the end of the presentation, almost everyone was in tears.
The most shocking thing about the whole presentation was how surprising it was. I never expected that she would have had a problem like that. She always seemed so happy and confident; it was hard to picture her counting calories because she thought she wasn't good enough.
You also never know what kind of impact you have had on people's lives. The courage of the girl behind me to talk about something so personal, and her strength to ask for help and overcome her problems have inspired me.
32. What can we learn from the first paragraph? A. The writer was a twelfth-grader.
B. The writer liked observing people D. The writer had a few friends in the class
C. The English class was too challenging.
33. How did the writer find the girl friendly? A. She sat directly behind the writer.
B. She attempted to disturb the writer. D. She said hello to the writer in some way.
C. She was always laughing and talking.
34. What did the writer realize after watching the girl's presentation? A. The girl wasn't good enough.
B. The girl was happy and confident.
D. It is not as easy as it seems to really know a person.
C. You can never really know a person.
35. What could be the best title for the passage? A. The Girl behind Me C. My English Class
B. An Open-ended Project D. Strength to Ask for Help

How to Fix a Relationship
If you’re having a problem in your relationship, you’re not alone. 36 However, you can make it work out if you decide to work together to fix it.
Recognize the problems. Any number of problems could do harm to your relationship. You should look for signs and symptoms of the problems you’re facing. Listening attentively is the key, which can help you understand what he or she is feeling. 37 Actually think about what the person is saying, and maybe try to understand what is behind the words as well. You also have a right to discuss what you’re feeling and thinking. The key is to keep a calm head.
38 Once you’ve figured out what some of your problems are together, talk about solutions together. How can you solve the problem in a way that both of you can live with? In other words, you need to look for common ground. 39 Maybe you can both agree on the problem at least, or maybe you can agree on the first step to the solution. For instance, you agree that you are feeling disconnected. Maybe you can take it one step further and agree that you need to spend more time together.
Make a plan together. Once you’ve agreed to solutions, it’s time to put them into concrete terms. For instance, if you both agree you need to spend more time, then the agreement might be that you should make a date at least once a week.
Find ways to compromise. The key to any relationship is learning to compromise. 40 Compromising is about finding common ground, and both of you giving a little on the issue. A. Stick to your own principles. B. Brainstorm concrete solutions. C. Don’t just let the words pass over you. D. Start with the place you both agree on.
E. Most people have trouble in relationships at one point or another.
F. You can’t just expect to win every argument, as relationships involve giving and taking. G. Whatever you need to do, take a few minutes to calm down before continuing the discussion.
