A Feeling Good

You might wake up one morning and just feel like saying “Blah”. Maybe it’s raining outside. Or maybe you have to take a quiz you didn’t study for. Or maybe you had a fight with your brother or sister the night before and said mean things to each other. Or maybe you don’t know why you feel bad.

Feeling blue, or depressed can happen to kids and adults. It usually lasts one day or two and then disappears. Your body and your mind are totally connected. Here are some of the things you can do with your body and mind to feel good about yourself.

①Go out for a walk. Walking helps clear your head so that you can collect your thoughts. ②Take one evening a week just to chill out. Read a book or play a game with friends. ③Listen to your favorite music.

④Try to relax all the muscles in your body by first tensing them and then let them go. Work from your toes up to your head.

⑤Yoga and stretching are great stress reducers and body toners. Yoga promotes strength, balance, flexibility, good posture (姿态), and a general sense of well-being.

⑥To take your mind off problems, find a quiet spot, close your eyes, relax your body, and picture yourself in perfectly peaceful surroundings.

⑦When you are stressed or emotionally jammed up, close your eyes and take three very deep breaths, each time exhaling completely until most of the air is out of your lungs. This will refresh you and help you to think more clearly.

⑧Friendship is good for your health. You probably already know how the support and

companionship of friends make your whole life better. But friends don’t just help to keep you happy-they may also help to keep you healthy. In a recent 13-year study, Harvard researchers concluded that friendship could be as important to human health as regular exercise! They found that people who have good friends experience less stress, recover more quickly from illness, and even live longer than people without good friends. 21. When I first started university I remember hearing about bone marrow (骨髓) donation during Festival’s Week. Some students volunteers from a group called Marrow tried to convince me to attend an event so I could learn more about it. The word “bone” immediately made me think that donating would be a painful procedure, so I refused. Back then, there was no way I could have known three years later, I would be one of the many people that desperately needs a bone marrow donor to save their lives. I am currently waiting to be matched with a donor and if I am lucky enough to find a good match, it will be this lovely stranger that saves my life. I received my cancer diagnosis in June. It is only at that time that I realized how ignorant I had been about the bone marrow donation process.

The process of donating stem cells is actually very simple. In 90% of cases, donors are asked to donate their blood stem cells, the other 10% will give their bone marrow. Lots of donors say that both these things are virtually pain free, and nothing to be scared about. Being a bone marrow donor should be something to be proud of, as every donor has an opportunity to save someone’s life!

D.2

At the moment I know that the doctors are busy searching for a match, I simply live everyday in the hope that there will be a donor right for me. If I have an opportunity for life, I won’t waste it.

When I was a first year at university, I made the mistake of walking away from becoming a stem cell donor. Please don’t make the same mistake that I did. There are so many people out there, including myself, that need your help; and by undergoing a simple, pain-free procedure, you could have the chance to proudly say that you saved someone’s life.

According to the United Nations Environmental Program, consumers in industrialized countries waste as much as 222 million tons of food every year, which means the food production of sub-Saharan Africa. Now the residents of the small Spanish town of Galdakao have provided a solution to the increasing food waste trend—a solidarity fridge.

Lacked in a wooden fence, the solidarity fridge is in the center of the small town. Every morning, individuals, restaurants, and supermarkets store food and drinks nearing their expiry date (保质期). Any of the town’s residents or even those living in nearby areas can take whatever they wish for free.

To make sure the food is safe to eat, raw fish, meat, eggs and packed packaged or canned goods past their expiry dates are banned. Also, though homemade leftovers are welcome, donors are required to list all the ingredients (成分).

Alvaro Saiz and other members of Galdakao’s volunteer association which came up with the brilliant idea say they were inspired by similar action in towns and cities of Germany.

Though it took the team over a month to get all the necessary peemits, It was well worth the effort. Saiz says since the refrigerator appeared, they have collected between 200 to 300 kg of good food that would have otherwise been thrown away.

Earlier this year, a group of students at the university of California, set up a similar public fridge in their front yard to share food. It was a huge success until the officials claimed it an illegal food facility and ordered it be removed.

But it is not the end of the world. Simple action like consuming leftovers, buying just enough, and donating unused safe food to food banks can make an impact in preventing unnecessary waste. So be sure to do your part.
