Doctors have known for a long time that extremely loud noises can cause hearing damage or loss. The noise can be the sound of a jet airplane or machines in factories or loud music or other common sounds found at home or at work..

An American doctor has found that using aspirin can increase the temporary hearing loss or damage from loud noises. He did an experiment, using a number of male students at a university who all had normal hearing. He gave them different amounts of aspirin for different periods of time, then he tested their hearing ability. He found that students who were given four grams of aspirin a day for 2 days suffered much greater temporary hearing loss than those who did not use aspirin. The hearing loss was about twice as great. The scientists said millions of people in the USA used much larger amounts of aspirin than were used in the study and those people faced a serious danger of suffering hearing loss from loud noise. 46. In 1909 an English newspaper offered £1,000 to the first man to fly across the English Channel in an aeroplane. Today, modern jets cross it in minutes. But at that time it still seemed a good distance. The race to win the money soon became a race between two men. Both were very colorful.

One was Louis Bleriot. He owned a factory in France that made motor car lamps. He was

already well known as a pilot because he had crashed several times. Some people laughed at him. One man said, “He may not be the first to fly across the Channel but he will certainly be the first to die in a crash!” But Bleriot was really a good and brave pilot. He also had many good ideas about aeroplane design.

The other man was Hubert Latham. He was half French and half English. He took up flying when his doctors told him he had only a year to live. “Oh, well,” he said, “if I’m going to die soon, I think I shall have a dangerous and interesting life now.” Latham was the first to try the flight across the Channel. Ten kilometers from the French coast his plane had engine trouble. It crashed into the water and began to sink under the water. A boat reached Latham just in time. He was sitting calmly on the wing and was coolly lighting a cigarette. Bleriot took off six days later. He flew into some very bad weather and very low cloud. He somehow got to the English side and landed in a farmer’s field. When he did so, a customs officer rushed up to his plane. Planes have changed since then, but customs officers have not. “Have you anything to declare?” the officer demanded.

50. “A good distance” here means _____________.

There are various reasons why the cancers appear to be on the increase. For one thing, though the victims are to be found in all age groups, they are particularly likely to attack person in their middle and advanced years. Naturally, since people live longer these days, there are more cancer victims than formerly. Again, with better methods of diagnosis, doctors can more readily recognize cancerous(癌的) growths that would formerly have passed unnoticed or that would have been wrongly diagnosed. It is believed, too, that certain habits and conditions of modern living, including heavy smoking and the pollution of the air, may expose people to more cancer-causing circumstances than before.

We all look forward to the day when a simple medical test can find cancer while it is still small. Researchers around the world are working on such a test. Most of their work involved the examination of proteins and fats in the blood.

Researchers in Boston have found substances in the blood of cancer patients that do not appea

r in healthy persons. The test showed which persons had cancer and which did not. It was correct more than 90 percent of the time.

The researchers believe the test may be able to show cancer very early in its development. Cancers discovered early usually can be treated successfully. The test examines fat particles in the blood called lipids(油脂). Cancer seems to change lipids although doctors do not know why. The test showed differences between the lipids of the persons with cancer and the lipids of those without cancer. The researchers say the new test could be a step to develop a simple way to check patients for cancer before the disease shows on X-rays.

53. According to the passage, the underlined word “diagnosis” means _____________. A. treatment B. examination C. research D. success 54 Which of the following is TRUE?

A. The simple way of checking cancers has something to do with proteins and fats in patients’ blood.

B. We know, from the passage, why the middle –aged persons can easily suffer form cancer. C. X-rays are the simple ways to determine whether a person has cancer or not. D. Maybe cancers have nothing to do with a person’s habits and living conditions. 55. Which is the best title for this passage?

A. A Simple Way to Cure Cancer B. Cancer Can Be Cured

C. How to Find Cancer D. Early Discovery Of Cancer D

A new plan for getting children to and from school is being started by a local government in Eastern England. This could end the worries of many parents fearful for children’s safety on the roads.

Until now the local government have only been prepared to provide bus services for children living more than three miles from their school, or sometimes less if special reasons existed. Now it has been decided that if a group of parents ask for help in organizing transport they will be prepared to go ahead, as long as the arrangement will not lose money and children taking part will be attending their nearest school.

The new plan is to be tried out this term for children living in Milton who attend Impington School. The children live just within the three-mile limit and the local government have said in the past that they will not undertake to provide free transport to the school. But now they have agreed to offer a sum of money for a bus service from Milton to Impington and back, a plan which has the support of the school’s headmaster.

Between 50 and 60 parents have said they would like their children to take part. Final calculations have still to be carried out, but a government official has said the cost to parents should be less than $ 20 a term.

They have been able to arrange the service at a low cost because there is already an agreement with the bus company for a bus to take children who live further away to Impington. The same

bus would now just make one more journey to pick up the Milton children. The official said they would get in touch with other groups of parents who in the past had asked if transport could be provided for their children, to see if they would like to take part in the new plan. 56.
