the reviewing process of your paper is now completed. Both reviewers are in favour of a publication, but request quite a number of changes and additions. I fully agree with this and decided that overall a major revision is needed before publication. Further editorial remarks are:

* The language needs some improvement. Please ask for professional help. Elsevier has no language editing service.

* Please consider in particular the comments no. 2-4 and 6 of reviewer 2 concerning the experimental part. They are essential for a successful revision. * Line 65 and else in the manuscript: Please always a space between number and unit (e.g. 200 mM, 25 癈).

* Experimental part: Please add the quality of the chemicals.

* Line 107: The HPLC column has to be specified more precisely (pore size, polymeric or monomeric, end-capped etc.).

* Line 136: Please add the electrospray ionisation conditions.

* Line 164 and else: Please no dots between measuring units, just a space. * Due to international agreements also our journal is obliged to require some quality assurance data which prove the quality and validity of experimental data (e.g. use of reference materials for control, recovery studies, blanks etc.). Please add such information.

* Please use international abbreviations for journals. Please use the ISI list under http://library.caltech.edu/reference/abbreviations/. No \after full words such as \

* Please Figure captions on a separate page.

* Please give error bars in figures 2 and 4. I assume that you have not carried out the experiment only once.

* Please do not just connects measuring points in figures 2 and 4, try a curve fitting.

Please list all items you have changed in a reply letter or a separate list. If you disagree with some statements and proposals of the reviewers, please comment on them in a separate letter and give convincing reasons why you could not follow them.
