2.5 CE-labelling

To help ensure that your installation is EMC-correct, themanual provides detailed instructions for installation.Furthermore, we specify which norms that are compliedwith by which of our products. We offer the filters thatcan be seen from the specifications and gladly provideother types of assistance that can help you obtain thebest possible EMC result.

If more than one device is installed in cabinets, the

cabinet rear plate, which must be made of metal, shouldbe used as a common earth reference plate. The metalcabinets of the different devices are mounted on thecabinet rear plate using the lowest possible HF

impedance. This avoids having different HF voltages forthe individual devices and avoids the risk of radio

interference currents running in connection cables thatmay be used between the devices. The radiointerference will have been reduced.

In order to obtain a low HF impedance, use the fasteningbolts of the devices as HF connection to the rear plate. Itis necessary to remove insulating paint or similar fromthe fastening points.

sCompliance with EMC directive 89/336/EEC

In support of our claim that the VLT frequency convertercomplies with the protection requirements for emissionand immunity under EMC directive 89/336/EEC, a

Technical Construction File (TCF) has been prepared foreach model.

Such a file defines the EMC requirements and themeasurements made in accordance with harmonisedEMC standards in a Power Drive System (PDS) thatconsists of a VLT frequency converter, a control cableand the controls (control box), motor cable and motorplus any options added. The Technical Construction Fileis prepared on this basis in cooperation with a dulyauthorised EMC laboratory (Competent Body).

In most cases the VLT frequency converter is used byprofessionals of the trade as a complex component

forming part of a larger appliance, system or installation. It must be noted that the responsibility for the final EMCproperties of the appliance, system or installation restswith the installer.

As an aid to the installer, Danfoss has prepared EMC in-stallation guidelines for the Power Drive System. Thestandards and testing levels stated for the Power DriveSystem are complied with, provided that the EMC-correct installation guidelines are applied.

sCables

The control cable and the filtered mains cable should beinstalled separately from the motor and brake cables toprevent interference coupling. Normally, a distance of 20cm will be sufficient, but it is recommended to keep thegreatest possible distance wherever possible, especiallywhere cables are installed in parallel over a substantialdistance.

With respect to sensitive signal cables, such as

telephone cables and data cables, the greatest possibledistance is recommended with a minimum of 1 m per 5m of power cable (mains and motor cable). It must bepointed out that the necessary distance depends on thesensitivity of the installation and the signal cables, andthat therefore no precise values can be stated.

If cable jaws are used, sensitive signal cables are not tobe placed in the same cable jaws as the motor cable orbrake cable.

If signal cables are to cross power cables, this should bedone at an angle of 90 degrees.

Remember that all interference-carrying in- or outgoingcables to/from a cabinet should be screened or filtered.

Earthing

The following basic issues need to be considered wheninstalling a frequency converter, so as to obtainelectromagnetic compatibility (EMC).

Safety earthing:Safety earthing: Please note that the frequency con-verter has a high leakage current and must be

earthed appropriately for safety reasons. Apply localsafety regulations.

High-frequency earthing:High-frequency earthing:equency earthing: Keep the earth wireconnections as short as possible.

sScreened cables

The screen must be a low HF-impedance screen. This isensured by using a braided screen of copper, aluminiumor iron. Screen armour intended for mechanicalprotection, for example, is not suitable for an EMC-correct installation.

Connect the different earth systems at the lowestpossible conductor impedance. The lowest possibleconductor impedance is obtained by keeping the con-ductor as short as possible and by using the greatestpossible surface area. A flat conductor, for example, hasa lower HF impedance than a round conductor for thesame conductor cvess sectional area.
