Fruit or juice, which is nutritionally superior? This is almost the same as the age-old question: The chicken or the egg, which came first?

Usually, juicers remove the juice and some pulp (果肉) from fruits and/or vegetables. It takes a lot of fruit to make a container of juice. We do get all of the vitamins, minerals, beneficial plant chemicals and carbohydrates in juice out of a whole fruit. But we do not get much of the fiber, the part that aids our digestive process, fills us up, and may help protect us against heart diseases and certain cancers.

However, you may be surprised to discover that some juices actually contain more necessary nutrients (营养). For example, apples are not a good source of vitamin C, but many types of apple juice are fortified with vitamin C.

Juice typically has more calories than fresh fruit due to added sugar and less fiber. If calories are your primary concern, choose fresh fruit over juice and use water to quench your thirst. You can also look for low-calorie cranberry juice, typically sweetened with sugar substitute. We do not feel as filled up from juice because it does not contain any fiber. For many people, drinking a caloric beverage (饮料), such as juice, is not as satisfying as eating the same amount of calories in food. For those of us who need to increase caloric intake (such as athletes, children, or teens) juice is a GREAT choice.

Kids love the taste of pure fruit juice, and parents love it because it is a healthy source of fruits like grape, apple and pear. These juices do not have the natural levels of vital nutrients that 100 percent pure juices like orange juice provide.

56. According to the passage, you d better have _______ to help prevent heart disease.

A. fruit B. juice C. calories D. minerals

57. What can we learn from this passage?

A. We can get out of fruit all the nutrients which aid our digestive process.

B. We can hardly determine which provides more nutrients, juice or fruit.

C. People may prefer juice to food in taking in the same amount of calories.

D. If you want more calories, fruit might be your better choice.

58. The underlined word “blends” in Paragraph5 probably means “______”.

A. containers B. products C. substitutes D. mixtures

59. The author writes the passage mainly _______.

A. to remind people of negative effects of juice

B. to call on people to drink more juice

C. to help people learn more about fruit and juice

D. to persuade people to avoid junk juice containing various fruits

The earliest type of medicine in most cultures was the use of plants (herbalism) and animal parts.

There is no actual record of when the use of plants for medical purposes first started, although the first generally accepted use of plants as healing medicine was described in the cave paintings discovered in France, which have been dated back to between 25000-13000 BC.

The practice of medicine developed gradually, and separately, in ancient China, Egypt, India,

Greece, Persia and elsewhere. Medicine as it is practiced now developed largely in the late 18th century and early 19th century in England, Germany and France, thanks to advances in chemistry as well as laboratory techniques and equipment. The new ‘scientific’ medicine (whose results are testable and repeatable) replaced medicine in earlier times, which was based on herbalism.

The modern era really began with Robert Koch’s discoveries around 1880 of the transmission

of disease by bacteria, and then the discovery of antibiotics (抗生素) thereafter. The 20th century witnessed major advances in the treatment of infectious(传染性的) diseases in western societies. The medical world is now developing medicine that targets (面向)one particular disease process. Thus medicine is being developed to reduce the side effects to the greatest degree and to treat cancer and long-term problems such as high cholesterol(胆固醇)。

Today s medicine has evolved(逐步上升) over thousands of years as each generation used and expanded the knowledge of earlier times. This will continue to happen, and it is impossible to say how medicine will develop over the next hundred years. Our understanding of human genome(基因组)will lead to fresh treatments and new discoveries may open the door to unimaginable advances in medicine.

60.Which of the following statements about the use of plants for medical purposes is true?

A. Its origin is now well known to the public.

B. Some early cave paintings in Egypt showed when people began to use plants as medicine.

C. It is now generally accepted that people began to use plants as medicine at least 15000 years ago.

D. In most cultures, the use of plants came after the use of animals as medicine.

61. The author mentions ancient China, Egypt, India and other countries to show that_______.

A. these countries have a long history

B. only these countries began to develop medicine in the beginning

C. the practice of medicine developed separately in different countries

D. the practice of medicine developed in the same way in different countries

62. The new scientific medicine __________.

A. has testable and repeatable results B. is based on herbalism

C. is developed in England D. is capable of curing every disease

63.It can be inferred from the last paragraph that_____________.

A. the medicine in the future will in no sense be associated with that in earlier times

B. no one knows for sure what medicine in the future will be

C. there will be little room for the development of medicine in the future, since it is already as

developed now

D. herbalism will play a great role in the development of medicine in the future

Wen Jiabao arrived in Singapore yesterday for an official visit to the country. It is the first visit by a Chinese premier to Singapore in eight years. In the arrival statement, Wen said he is looking forward to the meeting with Singapore on ways to deepen East Asian cooperation between two nations so as to contribute to the building of a peaceful, harmonious relationship.

Premier Wen Jiabao and Singapore Prime Minister Lee Hsien Loong agreed to jointly develop an environmentally friendly city in northeastern China. The city will be a model for sustainable development, a Singapore government statement said. The “Sino-Singapore Tianjin Eco-city” will be developed by a joint venture (合资) formed by Chinese and Singapore companies. “This eco-city, to be built in Tianjin, will become another highlight in our relations,” Wen said after signing an agreement with Lee, who agreed, “On the Singapore side, on all levels, we ll give this project our full support.”

The two sides will share expertise (技术) and experience in urban planning, environmental protection, resources conservation, recycling, use of renewable resources and wastewater re-use. China s economic planning agency issued a set of guidelines earlier this month welcoming foreign investment in environmentally friendly areas such as recycling, “clean” industries and environmental protection.

Bilateral (双边的) relations between China and Singapore have seen big progress even though the two countries established diplomatic ties (外交关系) only 17 years ago, Wen said during his talks with Lee.

China and Singapore have also kept close contact and coordination (协调) on regional issues, he added. Wen said China and Singapore are both important Asian countries that share common interests in many areas.

One possible version:

Many students, about 55percent, were doing their homework. About 30 percent were having a rest. About 10 percent were listening to MP3. Only 5 percent of them were eating snacks at that time.

As is shown in the chart, we always have too much homework to do every day. We students should learn to balance our spare time and studies. Just like a saying goes: “All work but no play makes jack a dull boy.” What’s more, it’s necessary for us students to have a good rest at noon so that we will be energetic to attend lessons in the very afternoon.

Therefore, make full use of your time, get your work done more efficiently and then go in for more out-of-classroom activities. Only in this way can we enjoy a healthier life. (140 words)
