From the circle, we can see that space heating takes up the most energy consumption, it accounts for 48% of the total amount of energy. The second largest portion of energy (18%) is used for lighting, cooking, and running appliances. This is followed by water heating which expend 14% of the total. Refrigeration almost ranks the same as water heating, which is 13% of the whole amount of energy use. Among these energy consumption items, space cooling comes up to be the lowest, 7% of the whole.

This circle shows that the largest portion of energy is spent on space heating. This puts us into deep thinking.

If we can find ways other than the present regular energy sources to supply family need for energy, then we can save up the traditional energy sources such as a coal, electricity, wood, etc. Solar energy might be a good answer to this problem. Therefore, more efforts should be made and

more money should be spent on the research in this area. More people should be encouraged and supported to work on this issue. Maybe someday they can really enable us to enjoy the comforts of solar energy.

As can been from the above chart, some important changes have taken place in the past years with regard to the birth rate and death rate. Because of wars, the birthrate fell sharply and the death rate rose greatly in 1949. Between 1959 and 1979, the birthrate kept on increasing, while the death rate sometimes went up and fell down occasionally. From then on, both the birth rate and death rate reduced.

It is no difficult job for us to come up with some possible factors that underline the above changes. In the first place, with the development

of our economy, people have changed their lifestyles. They did not regard having more children as a good thing. Therefore, the birth rate had begun to fall down since 1970s. In the second place, with the improvement of both living standards of people and the technique of medical treatment, people can enjoy a longer life expectation. Thus the death rate had also begun to fall down since 1970s as shown in the chart.

Form what has been discussed so farm, it can be predicated that the resent situation will continue for quite a while in the near future. People will have fewer and fewer children, and they will enjoy longer and longer life expectation.

The increase in the Number of Chinese Traveling Abroad

As can be clearly observed from the chart above, the trend of Chinese traveling abroad is going up these years. In the past three years, the

number of Chinese traveling abroad was in a steady rise. According to the chart, the number increased from 7.5 million in 1999 to 10in 2000 and to 12.1 million in 2001.

I think there are at least three reasons to account for the above mentioned changes. First and foremost, the changes are primarily concerned with the income of Chinese. They are better off and can afford to travel abroad. What’s more, they have a lot to do with the development of the travel industry in China. More and more travel agencies are attracting more people to join in their tours abroad. Last but no the least, the changes are closely related to our policy of opening up to the outside world.

Form what has been discussed so far, it is obvious that the increase in the number of Chinese traveling abroad is of great concern of our life. It reflects the improvement of our living standards and the development of our economy.

In recent years more and more homes are being pushed outwards as the activities of business, government and pleasure tend to be concentrated

in the centers of the cities. Although most people are reluctant to move to the outskirts of the cities, I feel like living in the suburbs. It is true that the city can provide much convenience and entertainment, the very reason people can’t bear to part with city life. But the cost for the privilege of living in the city is also high. Just think of the places where we live, full of petrol fumes and toxic gases, torn by the roar of buses and lorries day and night, and thronged ceaselessly by crowds.Besides, as the housing problem in the city gets more serious, people have to pay high rents for very tiny flats which I would certainly disdain to live in.

In contrast, living near the countryside one can enjoy the clean atmosphere, the closeness to nature and the quiet, peaceful surroundings—the essential of a healthy life.

Nothing can be compared, as the pace of modern life is getting quicker, withthe first cock crow, the twittering of birds at dawn, and the sight of the rising sun glinting on the trees and green fields. Although living in the suburbs you may suffer a little discomfort brought by the necessity of travelling miles to work every day, it means nearly nothing when you think of the constant threat under which the city-dwellers live at the crime rate in most cities is higher.

The new suburban life is fast becoming a predominant pattern of living in most cities; and with the improvement of traffic and the perfection of services, it will prove to hold great superiority over city life.
