A new study surprised researchers, finding that for adolescent girls, romantic relationship problems can have serious, negative impacts on their mental health.
―I found that girls’ risk of severe depression, thoughts of killing themselves, and self-killing attempt increase, the more their relationships diverge (偏离) from what they imagined,‖ said the study’s author Brian Soller, Ph.D., an assistant professor of sociology at the University of New Mexico.
Soller used data from more than 5,300 high school students from the National Longitudinal Study of Adolescent Health. From this data he examined the mental health consequences of mismatches between adolescents’ ideal and actual relationships.
The study appears in the Journal of Health and Social Behavior.
Soller measured relationship inauthenticity(不可靠)by comparing how adolescents described their ideal relationship in an initial interview with how their first relationship after the interview actually played out.
―In the initial interview, researchers provided adolescents with a number of cards describing events that often occur within relationships, including everything from hand-holding and kissing to sex,‖ Soller said.
Respondents kept cards describing events they would engage in within an ideal relationship, and then indicated the order in which the events would occur.
Roughly a year later, the respondents repeated the exercise, only this time they indicated which events took place within their relationship, and then provided the order in which the events happened.
During both interviews, researchers asked participants about their mental health.
As for why relationship inauthenticity increased the risk of mental health problems for girls, but not for boys, Soller said, ―Romantic relationships are particularly important components of girls’ identities and are, therefore, strongly related to how they feel about themselves — good or bad.
―As a result, relationships that diverge from what girls imagine for themselves are especially damaging to their emotional well-being.‖
On the other hand, Soller said relationships are not as important to boys’ identities.
―Boys may be more likely to build their identities around sports or other after-class activities, so this could be why they are not affected by relationship inauthenticity,‖ he said.
In terms of the study’s policy implications, Soller said parents, educators, and policymakers should think about how to help girls construct identities that are less closely tied to romantic involvement.
―Helping girls build their identities around things other than romantic relationships may mitigate the effects of relationship inauthenticity on their mental health,‖ he said. 58. Which of following might be the best title of the passage? A. Relationship Problems Can Damage Teen Girls’ Mental Health. B. Relationship Is strongly Related to How Boys Feel About Themselves.
C. Romantic Relationship Discourage Girls From Participating in Various Activities. D. Romantic Relationship Plays As Important a Part in Girls’ School Life As in Boys’. 59. What did the researchers the students’ physical health. A. They asked about the students’ physical health. B. They helped teen subjects construct identities. C. They compared an ideal relationship with an actual one. D. They repeated the practice a year later in the same way.
60. Which of the following is closest to the underlined word ―mitigate‖ in meaning? A. relieve B. strengthen C. construct D. violate 61. What’s the author’s purpose in writing this text?

Although I’d begged and begged for the doll before the last Christmas, I only really played with her for a week or so.
By January she’d take the place on my shelf where she sat the rest of the year. I was a tomboy(野丫头,假小子)who preferred playing cowboys and Indians with the neighborhood boys. But that didn’t mean I wanted to give her up ! She was my doll!
My mother said, ―Everyone at church is doing to our neighbors in need. Some little girl will truly love that doll forever.‖
Mom and my five cousins were all giving things. I was only eight. I didn’t think I had anything to give—until Mom reminded me of the doll on my shelf.
―Remember, Betty,‖ she said, ―all that you give to others comes right back into your own life. I hope you’ll think about it.‖
I promised I would, but when Mom left I held my doll even tighter. I remembered how I’d loved her on Christmas morning when I first unwrapped her. It wasn’t fair that some other girl would get her.
It wasn’t as if our family had so much. Mom had gone through my closet, which was mostly full of hand-me-downs(旧衣物). I worked really hard to make them as good as they could be. The presents I was to give my cousins were crafts I’d made at school. I was sure they’d be happy with them on Christmas morning. But I wouldn’t be happy.
I stroked her hair smoothed her clean dress. She looked almost new. No wonder Mom thought I should give her to some little girl who would truly love her.
I played with her all that day. By the time I handed her over to Mom that evening, I thought she was the most beautiful doll in the world!
―I’m proud of you,‖ Mom said. That didn’t make me feel better.
On Christmas Eve there was a knock on our door. When Mom opened it no one was there—just a box of presents. A box from church! I had no idea we presents. I tore the paper off mine and gasped(喘气). My doll! My own doll! She’d come back to me just as beautiful as ever. Mom was right about two things that Christmas. What we give to others—like kindness and generosity—does come back to us. And my doll went to a little girl who truly loved her forever. I might have gone back to being a tomboy, but I never took my doll for granted again. 62. After hearing what her mother said, Betty__________.
A. felt wronged B. felt a little ashamed
C. decided to donate her doll D. was still not ready to give up her doll 63. Why did Betty think she wouldn’t be happy on Christmas morning? A. She would not receive any present. B. She had to throw away her hand-me-downs. C. She would lost something she wanted to keep. D. Her mother seemed to love other girls more than her.
64. It can be concluded from the last paragraph that Betty____________.
A. thought her mom was clever B. loved her doll more deeply since then C. would be more competent than before D. would not behave like a boy any longer.

One of the best-known Irish writers of children’s books is Oscar Wilds, who was a novelist, playwright, poet, and critic. He was showy, outspoken and unconventional, unlike other men of his time. At the height of his fame, he was betrayed by his lover Lord Alfred Douglas and had to serve two years hard labor for being himself. He died three years after he came out of prison. The work Wilde is remembered for was written over a period of less than 10 years. The Happy Prince and Other Tales was published in 1888. That volume marks the beginning of Wilde’s true creativity. However, academic criticism of Wilde’s work has too often dismissed his fairy stories
as lesser works, a minor bit of sentimentalism(多愁善感).
Today, since JK Rowling’s Harry Potter and Philip Pullman’s His Dark Materials, children’s literature has been repositioned as central, not secondary, shifting what children read, what we write about what children read, and what we read as adults. At last we seem to understand that imagination is ageless. Wilde’s children’s stories are splendid. In addition, it seems to me that they should be revisited as a defining part of his creative process.
―The Happy Prince‖ starts a new note in Wilde’s writing: loss. Fairytales always involve reversals of fortune. This works in both directions: beggars become kings, palaces collapse into shelters, the spoilt son swallows bitterness. Wilde’s own reversal of fortune from fame and money to poverty and imprisonment shares the same rapid drama. Fairytales are also and always about transformation of various kinds – frogs into princes, coal into gold – and if they are not overly moralistic, there is usually a happy ending. Wilde’s fairytale transformations turn on loss. ―The Happy Prince‖ is the story of a gilded(鎏金的) and jeweled statue on a column high above the town. One day, a Swallow rests at the feet of the Happy Prince, who tells him of all the suffering he can see. He asks the Swallow to take the ruby(红宝石) from his sword and give it to a poor family. The Swallow does so. The Prince begs him to stay and to strip him bit by bit of all his gold and jewels to distribute to others. The weather is getting colder and the Swallow knows he should fly to the sun. But as he takes the Prince’s jeweled eyes, he realizes that he must stay, for now the Prince is blind.
Winter comes. The Swallow dies at the feet of the Happy Prince, no longer sparkling with jewels and gold. The Mayor has the statue pulled down. As the workmen melt down the Prince they find they cannot melt his heart. They throw it on the rubbish pile next to the body of a swallow.
I don’t think anything could be closer in description than this to the criticism of Wilde and his talent by a society fascinated with appearances and indifferent(漠视)to imagination. Wilde believed in the soul. The soul is often described as a bird – and if Wilde is the Happy Prince, then the Swallow is his soul, that returns to him and will not leave him.
______ gift and sacrifice is another theme of Wilde’s fairy stories. In ―The Nightingale and the Rose‖, a Nightingale(夜莺)colors a white rose red with her own heart’s blood so that a poor student will have the most beautiful flower in the world to give to his beloved. His beloved rejects
him and his rose, and the rose is thrown in the gutter(排水沟), where it is broken by a cart-wheel. As Wilde says in his letter to Douglas: ―Having got hold of my life you didn’t know what to do with it… and so you broke it.‖
Reason and logic are tools for understanding the world. We need a means of understanding ourselves, too. That is what imagination allows. When a child reads of a Nightingale who bleeds her song into a rose for love’s sake, or of a statue who feels the suffering of the world more keenly than the Mathematics Master who scoffs (嘲笑) at his pupils for dreaming about Angels, the child knows at once both the mystery and truth of such stories. We have all at some point in our lives been the overlooked idiot(傻瓜) who finds a way to kill the dragon, win the treasure, marry the princess.
65. What has caused people to reevaluate Wilde’s fairytales? A. Wilde’s fairytales are well written.
B. Unlike other fairytales, Wilde’s stories have sad ends.
C. Children’s stories are regarded as important as other literary works. D. The Happy Prince and Other Tale marks the beginning of his true creativity. 66. Which is closest in meaning of the underlined word ―note‖(paragraph 4) A. Theme. B. Message. C. outcome . D. Attention. 67. Wilde’s works focus on loss because of _______.
A. Douglas’ betrayal B. his belief in the soul C. avoidance of being D. the rise and fall of his life
68. The missing words in paragraph 8 should be ―_______‖.
A. Emphasis on B. Applause for C. Reflection on D. Indifference to
69. What does the author think is the most valuable feature of Wilde’s fairytales
A. Imagination. B. Loss. C. Sacrifice. D. Sentimentalism.
70. What does the author mean in the last paragraph? A. It is necessary for children to read some fairytales. B. Fairytales should be read differently from serious works. C. Fairytales are constitute to be an important part of one’s growth.

Antibiotics, insulin, organ transplantation, HIV treatments and heart-bypass surgeries—it reads like an A to Z of medical progress. But the major progress has something in common: they were all developed and tested by using animals. Actually, animals are used for research in a variety of settings. Whether or not humans should use animals for testing purposes, however, is a controversial subject.
Animal testing allows researchers to develop new medicine and treatments, advancing the field of medicine and improving the health of society. For example, many drugs used to treat or prevent cancer, HIV, diabetes, etc, have resulted from tests performed on animals. Many advocators of animal testing support the practice for this reason, even if they do not support testing, cosmetics or other non-essential substances on animals. No one chooses to use animals where there in no need. In fact, animal research has contributed to 70 percent of Nobel prizes for physiology or medicine.
Animal testing also enables scientists and researchers to test the safety of medicine and other substances with which humans have regular contact. Drugs, for example , may create significant risks to humans, so testing them on animals first gives researchers a chance to determine their safety before human trials are performed. While scientists understand the differences between humans and animals, the similarities are considered significant enough to produce relevant data that they can then apply to humans. This, animal testing reduces harm to humans and saves lives, not only because the exposure to risky substances is minimized, but because some new medicine and treatments have positive effects on humans’ overall quality of life.
However, a significant number of animals are harmed or die as a result of experiments and testing. Unfortunately, many of the substances used on animal subjects never receive approval for human use or consumption. Those who oppose animal testing consider this a very important point , because saving humans from suffering is no excuse for the death of laboratory animals. Opponents also argue that animals are dissimilar enough from humans to make the results of animals tests unreliable. Related criticism is that testing causes stress in animals, meaning that they do not react
to experimental substances in the same way that they might in natural circumstances, making the results of experiments less valid
Using animals as research subjects is also expensive because they require food, shelter, care and treatment in addition to the costs of experimental substances. Long-term or multi-stage tests can increase the costs of the practice as well. The actual price paid for animals is also worth considering. In this respect, researchers take on an additional burden.
