阅读下列短文,从每题所给的A、B、C和D项中,选出最佳选项,并在答题卡上将该项涂黑。

Most people will answer a ringing phone. Usually you don’t know who is phoning or how urgent their business is, so a ringing phone is difficult to ignore. In one experiment, a researcher wrote down the numbers of several public phones in stations and airports. Then he called the numbers. Someone nearly always answered. When he asked why, people usually said, ―Because it rang.‖
A few years ago in New Jersey, a man with a gun killed 13 people. Armed police surrounded his house but he refused to come out. A reporter found out the phone number of the house and called. The man put down his rifle and answered the phone. ―What do you want?‖ he said, ―I’m really busy right now.‖
Imagine you’re at work and the phone is ringing in someone else’s office. Do you answer it or not? In one survey on telephone use, 51% of participants told researchers that they did. We can’t ignore the phone and for that reason, it forces its way into our lives. It interrupts what we are doing and on top of that, the caller is often someone we don’t really want to talk to. However, in the survey, 58% said they never took the phone off the hook, and 67% didn’t mind if someone called during a television programme. For 44% it wasn’t a problem if someone rang during a meal, while only 28% were annoyed or upset. If someone phoned in the middle of the night, 40% told researchers that they got nervous or frightened, while around 30% got angry.
Of course, when someone is really annoying, you can choose to hang up on them. This is in fact one of the rudest things you can do on the phone, but 79% said they were prepared to do it in some cases. Only 6% told researchers they never hung up on people.

42. The gunman answered the phone because ___________.

A. minded the ringing of the phone
B. couldn’t ignore the phone
C. refused to answer the phone in someone else’s office
D. kept the phone ringing
44. What is implied by the sentence ―79% said they were prepared to do it in some cases.‖ (in the last paragraph)?
A. They were annoyed by the rude callers.
B. They were prepared to punish those rude callers.
C. They were going to hang up on annoying phones.
D. They also agreed that it was a rude to hang up on others
45. The purpose of the survey is to find out __________.
A. how the phone interrupts people’s work
B. what role the phone plays in people’s lives
C. why people mind a ringing phone sometimes
D. when the phone communication is more welcome
B
Everyone knows that bad weather can depress you, but what about its effects on company profits? It’s difficult to sell ice-cream when it’s cold, or attract customers to a ski resort when there is no snow. So Companies often have insurance against negative changes in interest or foreign exchange rates. Insuring against bad weather is simply another form of risk management. In the USA, the market for this type of insurance is worth an estimated $9 billion a year.
Agriculture, energy and leisure are just three examples of industries that depend on the weather. The number of visitors to a theme park like Disneyland falls in a wet summer, and a mild winter reduces the demand for heating and affects the energy sector.
One advantage of this type of insurance is that it is easy to measure the weather. You can give detailed information about temperature, hours of sunshine, wind speed or inches of rainfall. For example, open-air terraces (阳台) are an important attraction for customers in the summer months. Obviously this depends on dry, sunny weather. They receive a payout(支付) for every Thursday and Friday (the best drinking times in London’s business district) when the temperature does not rise about 24 degrees Centigrade.
Commercial airfields have problems when there is a lot of wind. They can take out insurance
against the average wind speed exceeding a certain level. This way they receive payment for loss of income on days when high winds stop them flying.
In some countries there is a problem with this type of insurance. The climate is very changeable and weather information isn’t very reliable. This makes it more difficult to assess the risks. On the other hand, it gives people something to talk about!
46. The underlined word precautions in Para. 1 most probably means ___________.
A. power to achieve a result
B. arrangements in which you protect yourself in case the unpleasant thing happens
C. possibility of suffering harm or loss
D. actions taken in advance to protect against possible danger or failure
47. According to the writer, industries like agriculture, energy and leisure depend on the weather because __________.
A. they take more risks of managing their business if they want to expand it.
B. their business will be ruined if it is rainy or wet
C. they can make profit only when the weather is suitable for their business
D. the market for them will become weak when the weather is bad
48. What may Speedwell Weather Derivative be?
A. A building. B. A weather station.
C. A wine production company. D. An insurance company.
49. Why does the bar chain receive a payout for every Thursday and Friday?
A. Because they have fewer guests on those days.
B. Because the rent is higher in the summer months.
C. Because their business is always booming on those days.
D. Because they have insured against the bad weather on those days.
50. What is the passage mainly about?
A. How bad weather affects company profits.
B. How companies prevent economic loss by insuring against bad weather.
C. Why insurance against bad weather is necessary for companies in the USA.
D. What insurance companies can do for industries that depend on the weather.
