He wanted to tell people and nations and the whole world what to do. He kept on working and studying until he became a general in the French Army. His name was Napoleon Bonaparte, and he finally became emperor of France.

He was famous as an emperor, and for a while he won all the wars and became a national hero. But he was not a kind man. He could be charming when he wanted to be. But he was also rude and very cruel , and many people died so that he could win his wars.

Allow me to give you a little advice about writing fiction(小说). First, make your characters believable. Make sure that they behave and talk as inpiduals. In real life, everyone is unique. If all your characters speak the same way and react to things in the same way, you will lose your readers from the start.

Once your readers believe in your characters, you must get them to care. Each reader must be able to identify with at least one character, to almost become that character in his or her mind. You can do this by developing characters with real human personalities(个性), both good and bad. The inpiduals who populate your story should have human strengths and weaknesses.

Now it's time to weave your tale, to create a plot. Your readers are part of the story now; they are involved.

One last thing, your story must touch the readers' emotions. If you can make them laugh and cry along with your characters, you will be a successful writer.

39. How many pieces of advice does the writer give you

A one

B two

C three

D four

40. When writer says, "in real life, everyone is unique" he really means:

A in daily life, everyone is alone.

B in real life, every person is different from others.

C in our life, almost all the people are the same.

D in real life, nobody looks like another.

41. How can you make your readers believe in your characters

A Make your characters do things in the same way.

B Make your characters look like human beings.

C Let your characters speak the same way.

D Make your characters speak and act differently from each other.

42. If the readers are touched by your story, they will

A become the characters in the story

B laugh or cry as the story does on

C show their emotions to you

D B or C

Today is March 17th. About two and a half months ago, I said "Happy New Year!" to many of my friends. Slightly more than a month ago, I said the same thing to some other friends. In about four days, I will send the same wishes to yet another group of friends. I'll do the same thing in July and also in September. "How can that be", you might be thinking, "Everyone knows that New Year's Day is in January!"

The answer to the question you might have asked is that exactly when New Year's Day is depends on the calendar--and I have friends who use one or more of five different calendars to keep track of at least part of their lives:

a) January 1st: new Year's Day on the western/international calendar.

b) Between January 10th and February 19th: New Year's Day on the Chinese calendar (China, Korea, and a few other places).

c) March 21st: New Year's Day on the traditional Persian calendar (Iran).

d) Mid-July (usually the 16th): New Year's Day on the Islamic (Muslim) calendar.

e) September: New Year's Day on most Eastern Orthodox Church calendars (Central and Eastern Europe) and, usually, on the Jewish calendars.

And these are just the New year's Days that I know about! Actually, there are probably even more! 43. The first time the writer said, "Happy New Year!" was around January 1st. The second time was probably on ___.

A February 28th

B the middle of March

C January 8th

D February 16th

44. The author will say "Happy New Year" around March 21st to some ___ friends.

A Korean

B Persian (Iranian)

C Eastern Orthodox

D central European

45. In July, the author will say "Happy New Year" to a ___ group of friends.

A second

B third

C fourth

D fifth

46. The Chinese calendar is used ___.

A only in China

B in several different places

I shouldn't let it bother me. It really doesn't matter anyway. But it does bother me! All those people are preparing to celebrate a new century, a new millennium as well. And it just isn't so!

Most of us schedule our lives by the Gregorian calendar(阳历). Our years are measured from the birth of Christ. The first year of the first century is 1, or 1 . The last year of that century is the year 100. Simple Yes! A century is 100 years long. A millennium is 1,000 years long, which is exactly ten centuries.

Since the last year of the first century is the year 100, the first year of the second century is 101. Follow that pattern, century by century and you'll get my point. The year 2000 is the last year of the twentieth century. After all, two thousand means twenty hundreds. Twenty hundred years means twenty centuries. The year 2000 is the last, the final, the one that's still here, year of the twentieth century!!!!

I know, I'm getting too inaccurate. But it isn't fair. While most people will really be enjoying this coming New Year's celebration, those of us in the know will be yawning. We'll be wet blankets at the party. Everyone else will be cheering for the new millennium and we'll be saying, "It's not until next year."

I don't agree with the saying, "Ignorance is bliss." But in this case, perhaps it's true.

47. What do you think bothers the writer when he says "it just isn't so."

A he doesn't know it's already a new century

B he is bothered by the coming of new year

C he doesn't agree with the idea that the coming year is a new millennium

D he doesn't like to be in a new century

48. What is the ninth year of the third century by our calendar

A 309AD

B 39AD

C 209A

D D 29AD

49. According to the writer's opinion, the year 2000 is actually

A the beginning of the twentieth century

B the end of the twentieth century

C the beginning of the twenty first century

D the beginning of the new millennium

50. What does the sentence mean "We'll be wet blankets at the party"

A We'll all put wet blankets over us at the party.

B We'll not be as happy as the others at the party.

C We'll put out a fire at the party with the wet blankets.

D We'll share the happiness together with the other people at the party.

51. What does the sentence mean " Ignorance is bliss"

A It's not good to know a lot of things

B It's good not to know certain things

C Being ignorant is a bad thing

D Knowing nothing is a happy thing
