Dearest darling girl,

Today is the beginning of the next stage in your life. We head off to your new home at Stanford. Where do I start in telling you how proud I feel to be called Mummy by you? We've laughed at how you burst into this world with a scowl on your face, how determined you have always been right from feeding yourself to making big decisions for your life. There were days during your illness that I wasn't sure you had the will to make it. Telling you that you needed to want to get better was the hardest and yet the greatest day. From that day you took responsibility and decided you wanted to beat anorexia (厌食症).

I don't think I've ever felt so proud of you as when you came home to say that you wanted to go to West Africa between school and university. You chose to go alone, and to raise the money yourself. You have such strength of character and determination. It is at times hard to believe that you are only 18. You experienced something in that month that few dare experience in a lifetime.

So, Viv, here are my words of wisdom to you as you start your next big adventure. The world is a beautiful place but often a few things can make it seem difficult. God's temple is made of love. It's man's temple that is built of stones. Open your heart to goodness and never ever let negative people or thoughts take hold of you. As Minor Myers put it, “Go into the world and do

well. But more importantly, go into the world and do good.”

It is true that with every passing day, I will grow older and weaker. A day may come when I will become forgetful. But even then, you with your bright smile, will light up my heart.

(2018·陕西咸阳高三模拟)No one can doubt the fact that education plays an important role in a person's life. However, different people prefer different ways of education. Recently, a survey in Canada found that about 40 percent of high school students are not in favor of daily homework, which quickly led to a heated discussion about whether daily homework should be ended or not in schools.

Some people insist that daily homework helps students a lot. Yet others are for the opinion that homework is nothing more than a routine activity that cuts time for leisure or physical exercise. It's true that

out-of-class activities should be valued in a student's development, but from my point of view, homework still plays an important role in one's life.

Doing daily homework is a way to build a foundation for a person's self-development. In the long run, student's study habits will be more developed and their awareness of the importance of learning will be raised by doing homework every day. An experiment carried out by the University of British Columbia found that former students who did homework every day still take part in self-study every day even though they have already graduated. Homework also helped give them a deeper understanding of how important education is in a person's life.

Students doing homework every day also have better time management skills, since daily academic exercises can help them plan their free time more effectively. Take me as an example, I spent a lot of time playing video games when I was in primary school when there was little homework to do. After I got to middle school, the time I spent on homework began to increase greatly. But it did not become a burden for me. Instead, it helped get rid of my gaming habit as well as improve my ability to manage time.

Doing homework not only develops students' good habits and knowledge, but also improves their ability to manage their spare time. Although doing daily homework isn't ideal for everyone, people have to admit that the advantages it brings are more valuable than the harm.

8.What's the author's attitude toward doing homework? A.Favorable. C.Neutral.

9.Some students are not willing to do homework because they think ________. A.there is no point in doing homework B.doing homework takes up their spare time C.there is too much homework for them D.their daily homework is too easy

根据第二段第二句“Yet others are for the opinion that homework ... or physical exercise.”

10.What section of a newspaper is this text most probably taken from? A.Science. C.Business.

B.Health. D.Education.

11.Which of the following statements is TRUE according to the passage? a.Doing homework develops students' good habits. b.Students have to waste their free time doing homework. c.Doing homework does good to students' health.

d.Students improve time management skills by doing homework. A.a,d C.a,c

B.b,c D.b,d

Something's happening at the lowest point on our planet.

The Dead Sea, a salt lake bordered by Jordan to the east and Israel and Palestine to the west, is shrinking (缩小) at an alarming rate — about 3.3 feet per year, according to the environmentalist group EcoPeace Middle East. And human actions are largely to blame.

“It's not just like one country is punishing the Dead Sea; it's more like the whole area,” said photographer Moritz Küstner, who visited the area in February to work on his series “The Dying Dead Sea.”

The Dead Sea needs water from the other natural sources surrounding it, such as the Jordan River basin. But around the 1960s, some of the water sources it relied upon were diverted (使改道). Israel, for instance, built a pipeline during that time so it could supply water throughout the country.

Mineral extraction (开采) industries are another main reason the water levels are falling, experts say. The Dead Sea's minerals have been used as medicine and can often be found in cosmetics (化妆品) and other consumer products.

And then, of course, there's the Middle East's hot, dry climate, which makes it difficult for the lake to replenish itself. Last year, Israel and Jordan signed a $900 million deal in an effort to keep the Dead Sea's water levels stable. It includes building a canal from the Red Sea to the Dead Sea which would be able to not only supple water to Israel and Jordan but also to pump water into the Dead Sea.

But for now, Küstner shows us that the Dead Sea remains very much a place of interest, with people from all over the world going there to swim in its salty waters.

The Dead Sea, known as the Salt Sea in the language of Hebrew, is one of the saltiest bodies of water in the world. And because of what has been happening over the years, the salt is only getting saltier.

Krubera Cave in the western Caucasus Mountains is the deepest known cave in the world. An international team prepared to descend into Krubera. The team members hoped to be the first cavers to reach a depth of 2,000 meters, brought five tons of equipment and other necessities with them, and established camps at key locations along the route. They worked for up to 20 hours each day.

In the third week, progress was blocked at 1,775 meters by a sump — a cave passage filled with water that gives cavers few options. There are basically three techniques available: dive through it, empty it, or go around it. Gennadiy Samokhin dove to the bottom but was disappointed. “No chance to get through,” he said. Searching for a way around the sump, Garcia Dils risked entering a waterfall of near freezing water and discovered that his dry suit had holes in it. “The water was so cold I lost the feeling in my fingers,” he said later. He, too, was unsuccessful.

Finally, two teammates found a way around the sump through a tight passage they called the Way to the Dream. The team was exhilarated. The passage led to yet another sump at 1,840 meters. After a short test dive, Samokhin emerged, smiling. There was a promising passage, he reported. But it would have to wait. After nearly four weeks, with supplies running low, the team had run out of time and would have to return to the surface.

Four weeks later, a team of nine Ukrainian cavers led by Yuri Kasjan went back to Krubera. Following the path opened by the previous team, they reached the sump at 1,840 meters relatively quickly. After much searching, a pit (坑), later named the Millennium Pit, was discovered that

allowed them to pass the 2,000 meter depth. More pits and passages led them to 2,080 meters, a spot they named Game Over. But the caving game is never over. Deeper caves will probably continue to be discovered and call out to be explored.

8.Why did the team return to the surface after nearly four weeks? A.They were lacking in supplies. B.They had achieved their goal. C.They couldn't go through the sump. D.They gave their task to Yuri Kasjan's team.

According to a recent study published in Journal of Consumer Research, many people believe that healthy food must be more expensive than unhealthy food. In fact, the study's researchers found that a high price tag will even convince consumers that a certain food is healthful.

According to Rebecca Reczek, co-author of the study, the purpose of the study was to examine a_popular_belief. Sometimes the belief can be true: Organic produce and wild-caught seafood typically cost more money. But other times, the nutritional value of food ranks all the same.

In one experiment, Reczek's team gave a group of participants a new food product called “granola bites”. Some participants were told the product was very healthy. Other participants were told the bites had little nutritional value. Participants who were told the granola bites were good for them rated the snack as more expensive than the participants who thought the bites were unhealthy.

In another experiment, participants were given a health food bar labeled as “the healthiest protein bar on the planet”. Some participants were told the bar cost just $0.99, others were told the bar was $4. And here's what happened: The people who were given the “cheaper” bar needed to read a lot more reviews about the product when it was priced at a lower price point in order to trust that it was healthy.

The idea that we all believe healthy food needs to be more expensive works against us. All food companies need to do is push up the price to convince us.

But Reczek said, “When we shop, we don't have to be led astray. We can compare nutrition labels and we can do research before we go to the grocery store. We can use facts rather than our intuition (直觉)”.

12.What does “a popular belief” underlined in Paragraph 2 refer to? A.That people should eat healthy food. B.That organic produce is really healthy for us. C.That the nutritional value of food isn't the same. D.That eating healthy food means spending more money.

根据第一段中的“many people believe that healthy food must be more expensive than unhealthy food”以及第二段中的“Sometimes the belief can be true: Organic produce and wild-caught seafood typically cost more money. But other times, the nutritional value of food ranks all the same.”

13.Why did some participants regard the granola bites as more expensive? A.Because they knew they had high nutritional value. B.Because they had been told about the price of them. C.Because they knew they were a new food product. D.Because they considered them organic food.

根据第三段中的“Participants who were told the granola bites were good for them rated the snack as more expensive than the participants who thought the bites were unhealthy.”

14.How did some participants react when hearing the bar cost $0.99? A.They considered it healthy. B.They were doubtful about it. C.They really wanted to buy it. D.They were very happy about it.

根据第四段中的“The people who were given the ‘cheaper’ bar needed to read a lot more reviews about the product when it was priced at a lower price point in order to trust that it was healthy.”

Need more excitement in your life? Maybe it's time to take up an extreme sport!

__1__ Each year they are becoming more and more popular. Some examples of extreme sports include base jumping, ice climbing, cave diving, and ... cheese rolling?!

No one knows exactly how it started, but Cooper's Hill Cheese-Rolling Race is an annual event that has taken place for over 100 years. The name comes from Cooper's Hill where the “sport” takes place, just outside the village of Brockworth, England.

__2__ A wheel of cheese is thrown down a hill while a group of people chase after it, trying to be the first to catch it or reach the bottom of the hill. The cheese weighs just over 3kg and picks up a lot of speed travelling down the very steep slope (斜坡). __3__ And if you come second or third you'll receive £10. Incredibly, the event has become so popular that people travel from all

4.How many reasons for the Dead Sea's shrinking does the author mention in the text? A.One. C.Three.

5.What can we learn about the Dead Sea's minerals? A.They have practical value. B.They are controlled by Israel. C.They can be extracted very easily. D.They are mainly used in heavy industry.

After much searching, a pit (坑), later named the Millennium Pit, was discovered that allowed them to pass the 2,000 meter depth.

根据第三段中的“After nearly four weeks, with supplies running low, the team had run out of time and would have to return to the surface.”

10.Which of the following is TRUE according to the text? A.Game Over was discovered at 2,000 meters. B.The Way to the Dream begins at 1,840 meters. C.The Millennium Pit passed the 2,080 meter depth. D.Samokhin found a way around a sump at 1,775 meters.

I have lived in America's countryside for nine years, first in Michigan, where I was getting my university degree; then in central Illinois; and now in Indiana, where I am a university teacher. There were a few things I enjoyed complaining (抱怨) about in my living area. I'm a vegetarian (素食者), so there's nowhere to go out for a nice dinner without taking a 50-mile drive. I'm black, so there's nowhere to get my hair done without another 50-mile drive.

I repeated these complaints to my parents and my friends. Sometimes it seemed like complaints were the common language in my circle. We all were dissatisfied with something. Back in Illinois, my friends complained about the train to Chicago and how it's never on time; my friends in bigger cities complained about the expensive rent and strange smells on the subway.

Complaining allows us to accept the imperfect without having to take action. We all have great ideas about what life would be like if only we had this, or did that, or lived there. Perhaps complaining helps bridge the large space between these perfect selves and reality.

There's also this: I really didn't want to change most of the things I complained about. Complaining was helpful on those days when happiness required too much energy. But it also made me lose sight of something. I was born and grew up in Nebraska and have lived most of my life in one of the plains states. When I went to the coasts, I was surprised by how unattractive big-city living can be.

Complaining may offer relief, but so does acceptance. There is no perfect place. There is no perfect life. There will always be something to complain about. By focusing on (关注) my complaints, I risked missing out on important moments of happiness. Now, I look up into the night sky and see all the stars. And I know that I have nothing to complain about.

5.What do we know about the author? A.She likes driving in the countryside. B.She is very picky about her hair. C.She is a well educated woman. D.She often goes out for dinner.
