Every day I pass by a homeless old man on the street. He usually sat near where I go to school. Whenever I pass by, he says “hello” in a cheerful manner, and I always say it back. I give him any extra change I have.

The old man always wears an old watch. It is not an expensive watch by any means, but it serves its purpose. One day I noticed he wasn’t wearing it any more. I asked him why and he looked down and told me that the battery (电池) had died so he threw it away. I knew he couldn’t buy a new battery and he didn’t have enough money to buy a new watch.

He stayed on my mind all day, and I knew what I had to do. I went out to a shop and bought him a watch. It was not an expensive one, but that was very similar to the one he had. When I saw him the next day, he was smiling and cheerful as ever. When I bent down to put some change in his cup, I also dropped the watch in. I didn’t say anything about it. I just smiled at him and kept on walking. He didn’t even notice it until I left. I looked back and watched as he pulled the watch from the cup. He looked at me and I just smiled and nodded. He put the watch on with a big smile on his face and I walked happily on my way.

Love plays a main role in our life. Love makes you feel wanted. Hope is what keeps life going. Parents always hope their children will do well. Hope makes us dream. Hope builds in patience. Life teaches us not to despair even in the darkest hour, because after every night there is a day.

If you eat junk food(垃圾食品), you can’t really expect to grow up strong and healthy. But if you eat healthy food, you may do so. So how can we know which food is healthy? Unluckily, a lot of food looks good, but it isn’t really good, because it contains things that are bad for both your health and the environment. Where are the things from? This is all to do with how people produce food: growing it on the farm, processing(加工) it in factories, storing it and making it ready for you to eat. Here’s what happens:

Most farmers use chemicals(化学品) to stop their crops from getting sick. Many of these chemicals are kept in the food you eat. Some people believe that this may make people get illnesses. The chemicals may also pollute water and air, and kill lots of animals.

Waste from farm animals brings a lot of pollution. Some of the waste gets into the water. Planes used by people to move food and drinks around also pollute the air.

Most things that you drink, like cola, taste good, but something in them, including sugar, may be bad for your health. Sugary drinks make you fat and are bad for your teeth. What you can do:

If you can, try and get organic(有机的) food. Organic food doesn’t harm the environment. Animals kept on organic farms are treated(对待) more kindly than the ones on factory farms.

Take it in turns to go out once or twice a week and see what you can find. You never know, one day you might find something valuable.

Recycling: Nearly two-thirds of your rubbish can be recycled. Some areas already provide places to people to recycle bottles, tins, plastic and paper. Find out if this is done in your neighborhood. If it’s not, do something about it.
