A well-dressed man entered a famous jewelry shop. He explained that he wished to buy a pearl for his wife’s birthday. The price didn’t matter, since business had been very good for him that year. After examining a nice black one that costs $5, 000, he paid for the pearl in cash, shook hands with the jeweler, and left.

A few days later the man returned and said that his wife liked the pearl so much that she wanted another one just like it. It had to be exactly the same size and quality as she wanted a pair of earrings made. "Can you give me any advice on how to get such a pearl?" said the man. The jeweler regretfully replied, "I would say it’s exactly impossible to find one exactly like that pearl."

The rich man insisted that the jeweler advertise in the newspapers, offering $25,000 for the matching pearl. Many people answered the advertisement but nobody had a pearl that was just right.

Just when the jeweler had given up hope, a little old lady came into his store. To his great surprise, she pulled the perfect pearl from her purse." “I don’t like to part with it." she said sadly, I got it from my mother, and, my mother got it from her’s. But I really need the money.

B

I travel a lot, and I find out different “styles” of directions every time I ask “How can I get to the post office?”

Foreign tourists are often confused in Japan because most streets there don’t have names; in Japan, people use landmarks(地标) in their directions instead of street names. For example, the Japanese will say to travelers, “Go straight down to the corner. Turn left at the big hotel and go past a fruit market. The post office is across from the bus stop.”

In the countryside of the American Midwest, there are not usually many landmarks. There are no mountains, so the land is very flat; in many places there are no towns or buildings within miles. Instead of landmarks, people will tell you directions and distances. InKansasorIowa, for example, people will say, “Go north two miles. Turn east, and then go another mile.”

People in Los Angeles, California, have no idea of distance on the map; they measure distance in time, not miles. “How far away is the post office?” you ask. “Oh,” they answer, “it’s about five minutes from here.” You say, “Yes, but how many miles away is it?” They don’t know.

It’s true that a person doesn’t know the answer to your question sometimes. What happens in such a situation? A new Yorker might say, “Sorry, I have no idea.” But

inYucatan,Mexico, no one answers “I don’t know.” People inYucatanbelieve that “I don’t know” is impolite. They usually give an answer, often a wrong one. A tourist can get very, very lost inYucatan!

40.When a tourist asks the Japanese the way to a certain place, they usually ______.

A. describe the place carefully B. show him a map of the place

C. tell him the names of the streets D. refer to recognizable buildings and places

41.What is the place where people measure distance in time?

A.New York. B. Kansas. C. Los Angeles. D. Iowa.

42. People in Yucatan may give a tourist a wrong answer ______.

A. in order to save time B. so as to be polite

C.Los Angeles. D. for fun

43. What can we infer from the text?

A. It’s important for travelers to understand cultural differences.

B. It’s useful for travelers to know how to ask the way properly.

C. People have similar understandings of politeness.

D. New Yorkers are generally friendly to visitors.

C :you must be able to hold attention and interest of your students;you must be a clear speaker, with a good,

strong, pleasing voice which is fully under your control;you must be able to act what you are teaching,in order to make its meaning clear.

A good teacher doesn’t sit still before his class;he stands all the time while he is teaching;he walks about, using his arms, hands and fingers to help him in his

explanations, and his face to express his feelings.Listen to him,and you will hear the loudness, the quality and musical note of his voice always changing according to what he is talking about.

The fact that a good teacher has some of the gifts of a good actor doesn’t mean he will indeed be able to act well on the stage, for there are very important differences

between the teacher’s work and the actor’s.The actor has to speak words he has learnt by heart;he has to repeat exactly the same words each time he plays a certain part, even his movements and the ways in which he uses his voice are usually fixed beforehand. What he has to do is to make all these carefully learnt words seem natural on the stage.

A good teacher works in quite a different way.His audience takes an active part in his play--they ask and answer questions, they obey orders, and if they don’t understand something, they say no.The teacher therefore has to meet the needs of his audience. He can’t learn his part by heart, because their brains couldn’t keep discipline:they couldn’t keep strictly to what another has written.

44.If you want to be a good teacher, you should________

A.act out what you have learnt strictly. B.be a good actor on the stage.

C.sit all the time while teaching. D.suit the needs of different students.

45.The underlined word “talents” in the first paragraph means________.

A.methods. B.gifts. C.wishes. D interests.

46.In what way is a teacher’s work different from that of an actor’s?

A.The teacher must learn everything by heart.

B.He has to deal with unexpected situations.

C.He has to use more facial expressions.

D.He has to control his voice better than an actor.

47.The main difference between students and audience in the theatre is that

students_____.

A.move around the class. B.keep silent all the time.

C.take an active part in class. D.1ike body language.

D

Children love to hear stories; a story told well can communicate morals and important lessons, or afford a medium for your children to explore feelings. Through your storytelling, your child can receive such benefits as follows:

*Defuse (消除)Fears: Tell a story that deals with a fear your child is struggling with. Is your child afraid of going to the dentist? Make up a story about a child who bravely goes to the dentist and finds out it really isn’t all that bad. Sometimes children need to see someone else conquer a fear before they believe they can overcome it

*Explore Consequences: The art of storytelling offers a perfect way to act out the kinds of consequences that follow certain actions. You can use the characters in the story to communicate your reasons behind limits and boundaries as you show your child why you make certain decisions. Because the story is about fictional characters, your child may be able to understand it(and the reasoning behind it)

*Stimulate(激发) Your Child’s Imagination: Storytelling is a great way to open your child’s imagination. Allow your child to interact with you as you tell stories, making up characters and monsters or obstacles for your characters to face. After a while, you may find yourself listening to a story your child invented instead of telling one yourself.

*Convey moral Expectations: Most fairy tales and nursery rhymes have morals woven into them. Use traditional fairy tales, modern children’s books and your own

imagination to convey your morals to your children. Are you concerned that your child is being selfish or unkind to a new neighbor? Tell a story that praises kindness, generosity and inclusiveness. Is your child unwilling to pitch in with chores or helping around the house? A story like The Little Red Hen will help set a good example

*Have Fun: Your child will always remember the hours you spent talking in silly voices, making up ridiculous characters and laughing about the stories you told.

48.What’s the purpose of this passage?

A. To introduce some stories children enjoy.

B. To encourage children to read more stories.

C. To show benefits of storytelling to children.

D. To discuss certain ways of telling stories.

49. According to the passage, The Little Red Hen can be a story that ___ .

A. help your child show interest in nursery rhymes.

B. turns your child into a family helper.

C. makes your child kind to your new neighbor.

D. is one of your child’s favorite stories.

50. Which of the following is TRUE according to the passage?

A. Storytelling is always an effective communication tool.

B. Stories help people make good decisions.

C. Children are better at imagining stories than their parents.

D. You can well impress your child by telling a funny story.

Then last year, my grandpa died. Everybody was hurt and everybody was crying. I remember that especially because it was the second time that I saw him cry. Mother asked me,“Do you know the most important body part yet, my dear?”

I was shocked when she asked me this now. Mother looked down at me with tears and said,“My dear, the most important body part is your shoulder.
