Parents feel that it is difficult to live with teenagers. Then again, teenagers have 31 feelings about their parents, saying that it is not easy living with them. According to a recent research, the most common 32 between parents and teenagers is that regarding untidiness and daily routine tasks. On the one hand, parents go mad over 33 rooms, clothes thrown on the floor and their children’s refusal to help with the 34 . On the other hand, teenagers lose their patience continually when parents blame them for 35 the towel in the bathroom, not cleaning up their room or refusing to do the shopping at the supermarket.

- 4 -

On the contrary, those who let teenagers experience the 40 of their actions can do better. For example, when teenagers who don’t help their parents with the shopping don’t find their favorite drink in the refrigerator, they are forced to 41 their actions.

Psychologists say that 42 is the most important thing in parent-child relationships. Parents should 43 to their children but at the same time they should lend an ear to what they have to say. Parents may 44 their children when they are untidy but they should also understand that their room is their own private space. Communication is a two-way process. It is only by listening to and 45 each other that problems between parents and children can be settled.

Working in Detroit ... rain, rain, and more rain.

I rushed to the airport only to find out from an airline ticket representative (机场地勤人员) that my return flight was one hour late.

As I cleared security, the progress of my flight went from departing (起程) one hour late to two hours, then three hours, then four hours late. I learned about these delays from the announcements given by an annoying airline gate agent.

It became clear that I was going to miss my connecting flight home.

After minute-by-minute travel rearrangements, and knowing that I had to give Web-based training (网上培训) the next morning back home, my husband Jim decided to drive to the airport, pick me up, and drive me back.

Jim and I arrived home at 4:30 am. I napped for a couple of hours, made coffee, logged on to the Internet conference site for my training, and waited and waited and waited.

It is lonely giving Web-based live meeting training when no one logs in. Do you know why they didn’t log in? Because I had actually scheduled the training for the next day, not the day that we had raced home to await.

I worried about telling Jim that he had held off sleep, driven through a huge storm and gotten through road construction to get me home 24 hours early for training. But the phone eventually rang as he called from work and it was time to own up (坦白). What do you think he said?

What would you have said?

Would you have scolded? Yelled? Teased? Would you have called all of your friends and let them know?

Well, Jim’s response to finding out that he had driven an almost 400-mile round trip in the rain for nothing was a slight chuckle (轻声地笑) and this comment: “The important thing is you are home.”

The important thing is you are home ...

Today, remind someone how important it is that they are at home with you. If they live far away, tell them how important it is that they have a home in your heart.

48. What trouble did the writer have?

- 8 -

百度文库- 让每个人平等地提升自我

D. She had a big argument with an annoying airline gate agent and missed her flight.

49. Which of the following is TRUE according to the text?

A. The writer cancelled her web-based training permanently.

B. Jim drove the writer all the way home from the airport to get her there in time for her

training.

C. The writer took it for granted that Jim would pick her up from the airport.

D. The writer caught her connecting flight and was back home in time for her training.

50. The writer felt worried about owning up to Jim because ______.

A. she knew he would get really upset and yell at her

B. she had mistaken the date for the training and he needn’t have picked her up

C. she was sorry that it had taken him so long to get home

D. she was afraid he might tell her friends

51. What do we know about Jim from the text?

A. He is willing to do anything for his wife.

B. He does not want to feel regret.

C. He cares about his family.

D. He loves driving more than anything else.

Are you an introvert (内向的人) or an extrovert? Before you say you are either one, you

should know that there is a third option.

According to a recent article in The Wall Street Journal, experts say there’s

a middle

ground between the two personality types ---people who they call “ambiverts (中间性格者)”.

- 9 -

百度文库- 让每个人平等地提升自我

Introverts don’t like crowds and enjoy keeping their thoughts to themselves, while extroverts, on the other hand, like meeting new people and being the center of attention. Ambiverts, as the name suggests, have both introverted and extroverted characteristics. But neither set of characteristics is completely in control.

As a result, they can move between being social and being alone with greater ease (轻松) than either extroverts or introverts. For example, ambiverts often enjoy other people’s company. But after a long day of hard work, they sometimes prefer to read a book or watch a TV series at home alone.

“It is like they’re bilingual,” Daniel Pink, the host of Crowd Control, a US TV series on

human behavior, told The Wall Street Journal. “They have a wider range of skills and can connect with a wider range of people in the same way someone who speaks English and Spanish can.”

Ambiverts have gotten more attention in recent years, thanks to books, TED talks and

consulting (咨询的) firms focusing on how personality traits (特征) change people’s behavior in relationships and careers. In fact, roughly two-thirds of people in the US are ambiverts, according to a personality survey done by Adam M. Grant, a professor of psychology at the University of Pennsylvania’s Wharton School.

Grant believes ambiversion takes good parts from introversion and extroversion.

“The

ambivert advantage comes from being enthusiastic enough to persuade, but at the same time, listening carefully to others and avoiding seeming overly confident or excited,”he told Forbes magazine.

But he also points out that unlike extroverts and introverts who tend to know what gives them energy, ambiverts can sometimes get stuck. They are often unsure which side of their personality should lead in a given situation.

52. What is the article mainly about?

A. Differences between introverts and extroverts.

B. How personality traits change people’s behavior.

- 10 -

百度文库- 让每个人平等地提升自我

C. Why ambiverts have gotten more attention recently.

D. Characteristics and advantages of ambiverts.

53. According to the article, ambiverts ______.

A. prefer being the center of attention to being alone

B. usually work hard and are successful in their careers

C. tend to connect with more people than introverts

D. want to keep their thoughts to themselves all the time

54. The underlined word “bilingual” in Paragraph 5 probably means ______.

A. able to adapt to a new environment well

B. able to speak two languages equally well

C. always ready to help those in need

D. good at drawing attention from the crowd

55. What advantage does Grant think ambiverts have over introverts and extroverts?

A. They know what gives them energy.

B. They seem more enthusiastic and confident.

C. They have more balanced personalities.

D. They can deal with a given situation better.

D

One of the executives gathered at the Aspen Institute for a day-long leadership workshop using the works of Shakespeare was discussing the role of Brutus in the death of Julius Caesar. “Brutus was not an honorable man,” he said. “He was a traitor (叛徒). And he murdered someone in cold blood.” The agreement was that Brutus had acted with cruelty when other options were available to him. He made a bad decision, they said—at least as it was presented by Shakespeare—to take the lead in murdering Julius Caesar. And though one of the executives acknowledged that Brutus had the good of the republic in mind, Caesar was nevertheless his superior. “You have to endeavor,” the executives said, “our policy is to obey the chain of command.”

During the last few years, business executives and book writers looking for a new way to advise corporate America have been exploiting Shakespeare’s wisdom for profitable ends. None more so than husband and wife team Kenneth and Carol Adelman, - 11 -

百度文库- 让每个人平等地提升自我

well-known advisers to the White House, who started up a training company called “Movers and Shakespeares”. They are amateur Shakespeare scholars and Shakespeare lovers, and they have combined their passion and their high level contacts into a management training business. They conduct between 30 and 40 workshops annually, focusing on half a dozen different plays, mostly for corporations, but also for government agencies.

The workshops all take the same form, focusing on a single play as a kind of case study, and using inpidual scenes as specific lessons. In Julius Caesar, for example, Cassius’s sly provocation(狡诈的挑唆) of Brutus to take up arms against Caesar was a basis for a discussion of methods of team building and grass roots organizing.

Although neither of the Adelmans is academically trained in literature, the programmes, contain plenty of Shakespeare tradition and background. Their workshop on Henry V, for example, includes a helpful explanation of Henry’s winning strategy at the Battle of Agincourt. But they do come to the text with a few biases (偏向): their reading of Henry V minimizes his misuse of power. Instead, they emphasize the story of the youth who seizes opportunities and becomes a masterful leader. And at the workshop on Caesar, Mr. Adelmans had little good to say about Brutus, saying “the noblest Roman of them all” couldn’t make his mind up about things.

Many of the participants pointed to very specific elements in the play that they felt related. Caesar’s pride, which led to his murder, and Brutus’s mistakes in leading the traitors after the murder, they said, raise vital questions for anyone serving in a business: when and how do you resist the boss?

56. According to paragraph 1, what did all the executives think of Brutus?

A. Honorable.

B. Superior.

C. Cruel.

D. Rude

57. According to the passage, the Adelmans set up “Movers and Shakespeares” to ________.

A. help executives to understand Shakespeare’s plays better

B. provide case studies of Shakespea re’s plays in literature workshops

C. guide government agencies to follow the characters in Shakespeare’s plays.

D. give advice on leadership by analyzing Shakespeare’s plays

- 12 -

百度文库- 让每个人平等地提升自我

58. Why do the Adelmans conduct a workshop on Henry V?

A. To encourage masterful leaders to plan strategies to win.

B. To highlight the importance of catching opportunities.

C. To illustrate the harm of prejudices in management.

D. To warn executives against power misuse.

59. It can be inferred from the passage that ____.

A. Shakespeare has played an important role in the management field.

B. executives feel bored with too many specific elements of Shakespeare’s plays.

C. the Adelmans will make more profits if they are professional scholars.

D. the Adelmans’ pr ogramme proves biased as the roles of characters are maximized.

60. The best title for the passage is _____.

A. Shakespeare’s plays: Executives reconsider corporate culture

B. Shakespeare’s plays: Dramatic training brings dramatic results

C. Shakespe are’s plays: a lesson for business motivation

D. Shakespeare’s plays: An essential key to business success

第Ⅱ卷(共 45分)

第四部分:任务型阅读(共10题,满分10分)

认真阅读下面短文,并根据所读内容在文章后表格中的空格里填入最适当的单词。注意:每空一个单词。

When was the last time you faced disappointment from a certain outcome that did not meet your expectations? It could be any event in your life. Perhaps your meeting at work did not go as well as you expected. Your new job was not what you expected. Maybe your relationship did not work out the way you hoped it would.

Disappointments are dissatisfactions that arise when your expectations are not met by outcomes. In short, a) you had an expectation, b) things did not unfold against the expectation.

Every day, people deal with disappointments. Depending on how big the disappointment is and how you choose to deal with it, the feeling of disappointment may disappear after a short while or hang over your life for an extended period of time. If not handled properly, disappointments can lead to depression and eventually - 13 -

百度文库- 让每个人平等地提升自我

lack of concern.

Contrary to what people may think, disappointments are actually positive phenomena, for two main reasons.

1. Passion toward a cause

Disappointment is the reflection of your passion toward something, whether it is a certain goal, dream, desire or outcome. Wherever there is a cause, there will be an effect--- in this case, the passion is the cause and disappointment is the effect. If you don’t care about something, you wouldn’t be feeling disappointed, would you? The very presence of disappointment suggests that this is something you care about so much that you would feel bad over it. The higher your disappointment, the stronger your passion for this is.

As Martin Luther King Jr puts it, “There can be no deep disappointment where there is not deep love.” This deep love is what drives you toward your goals, dreams and desires. This deep love will be what fuels you in life, bringing you to places you have never been before. This deep love is what makes life worth living. Remember that disappointment is always a better emotional state than neutrality where the inpidual feels indifferent toward anything. I would much rather be feeling a negative emotion any day than feeling absolutely nothing. The ability to feel is what sets us apart from non-living beings. To feel nothing is to be a robot or a machine.

2. Representing an opportunity for progress

Disappointment also signals an opportunity for progress and growth. If you are disappointed in an outcome, it means there is actually a certain error in your framework of thought which needs correcting.

Whenever you are disappointed, it means you have certain mental illusions (错觉) about reality which you need to address. If your understanding of reality are always right, you will never feel disappointed at all. By correcting your illusions and getting a more accurate picture of the reality, you are equipped with more knowledge. This knowledge is a source of power, power for you to act toward your goals. Think of disappointment as a troubleshooting tool which helps you iron out the twists in your understanding of reality. By using the knowledge from your previous - 14 -

Then one of the older hares who was wiser than the rest cried out to his companions, “Stop, my friends, take heart; don’t let us destroy ourselves after all: see, here are creatures who are afraid of us, and who must, therefore, be still more timid (胆小的) than us.”
