Spending as little as $ 5 a day on someone else could significantly boost happiness, the team at the University of British Columbia found.

Their experiments on more than 630 Americans showed they were measurably happier when they spent money on others — even if they thought spending the money on themselves would make them happier.

“We wanted to test our theory that how people spend their money is at least as important as how much money they earn,” said Elizabeth Dunn, a psychologist at the University of British Columbia. They asked their 600 volunteers first to rate their general happiness, report their annual income and detail their monthly spending including bills, gifts for themselves, gifts for others and donations to charity.

“No matter how much income each person made, those who spent money on others reported greater happiness, while those who spent more on themselves did not,” Dunn said in a statement.

Dunn's team also surveyed 16 employees at a company in Boston before and after they received an annual profit sharing bonus of between $ 3,000 and $ 8,000. “Employees who devoted more of their bonus to prosocial spending experienced greater happiness after receiving the bonus, and the manner in which they spent that bonus was a more important predictor of their happiness than the size of the bonus itself,” they wrote in their report, published in the journal Science.

They gave their volunteers $ 5 or $ 20 and half got clear instructions on how to spend it. Those who spent the money on someone or something else reported feeling happier about it.

“These findings suggest that very minor changes in spending allocations — as little as $ 5 — may be enough to produce real gains in happiness on a given day,” Dunn said. 48. The underlined word “boost” in the first paragraph probably means________. A. help to find B. help to increase C. help to bring D. help to get 49. Which of the following statements is NOT true according to the passage?

A. Researchers think that how people spend their money is at least as important as how much

money they earn.

B. People usually think spending money on themselves will make them happier. C. Those who spend more money on others can get much more bonus.

D. Very small changes in spending your money may be enough to gain happiness. 50. What is the general idea of the passage?

A. The more you earn, the greater happiness you will get.

B. If you spend money on someone else, you will feel happier. C. You can spend only $ 5 a day on someone else to get happiness.

4

D. Spending more money on yourself will make you happier. 51. It can be inferred from the 6th paragraph that ________.

A. the volunteers not given $ 5 or $ 20 spent their own money on themselves B. the volunteers were given $ 5 or $ 20 as a reward for the experiment.

C. those who spent the money on someone or something else felt happier about it D. half of the volunteers could spend the money as they liked.

China says 16 endangered finless porpoises(江豚) have been found dead since the beginning of the year and experts blame water pollution and climate change for pushing the species toward extinction.

The freshwater porpoise — popularly known in Chinese as the “river pig” — mainly lives in China’s Yangtze River and two lakes linked to the river.

Authorities (官方) have discovered 10 dead porpoises in Dongting Lake in the central province of Hunan since March, according to a statement by the government of Yueyang City, which is located on the lake’s shore. Another six dead porpoises have been found in Poyang Lake in the eastern province of Jiangxi since the beginning of the year. Experts warn that the species will be extinct within a matter of years.

Wang Kexiong, a researcher at China’s Institute of Hydrobiology, said water pollution, shipping and sand dredging (挖掘) were all possible contributing factors to the recent deaths. Many rivers in China have become heavily polluted with poisonous waste from factories and farms — pollution blamed on more than three decades of rapid economic growth and slow enforcement of environmental protection laws.

The report said climate change also could be to blame as the dry weather has caused water levels to drop and makes it more difficult for the porpoises to find food. Tests have shown that some of the porpoises are believed to have died of starvation.

In 2006, China was estimated to have only 1,200 finless porpoises left. That same year, the Baiji — a freshwater dolphin also native to the Yangtze River — was declared extinct. Earlier this year, a survey found just 65 “river pigs” in Dongting Lake and 300-400 in Poyang Lake. Following the recent deaths, Yueyang City promised to investigate and increase protection of the remaining porpoises in Dongting Lake.

52. How many river pigs are estimated to live in Dongting Lake now? A. 55. B. 49. C. 59. D. 65.

53. The following factors of river pigs’ deaths are mentioned EXCEPT .

A. water pollution B. climate change C. illegal fishing D. food shortage 54. We can learn from the text that .

A. climate change is likely to stop economic growth in China

B. river pigs’ deaths are completely caused by human beings’ activities C. river pigs’ deaths can be reduced if measures are taken in advance D. economic growth always has a negative effect on the environment 55. The numbers of river pigs are listed in Paragraph 7 to .

A. call for more effective protection B. show they are on the edge of extinction C. show they have become extinct D. show the importance of raising them in labs

In 1974, after filling out fifty applications, going through four interviews, and winning one offer, I took what I could get — a teaching job at what I considered a distant wild area: western New Jersey. My characteristic optimism was alive only when I reminded myself that I would be doing what I had wanted to do since I was fourteen — teaching English.

School started, but I felt more and more as if I were in a foreign country. Was this rural area really New Jersey? My students took a week off when hunting season began. I was told they were also frequently absent in late October to help their fathers make hay on the farms. I was a

5

young woman from New York City, who thought that “Make hay while the sun shines” just meant to have a good time.

But, still, I was teaching English. I worked hard, taking time off only to eat and sleep. And then there was my sixth-grade class — seventeen boys and five girls who were only six years younger than me. I had a problem long before I knew it. I was struggling in my work as a young idealistic teacher. I wanted to make literature come alive and to promote a love of the written word. The students wanted to throw spitballs and whisper dirty words in the back of the room.

In college I had been taught that a successful educator should ignore bad behavior. So I did, confident that, as the textbook had said, the bad behavior would disappear as I gave my students positive attention. It sounds reasonable, but the text evidently ignored the fact that humans, particularly teenagers, rarely seems reasonable. By the time my boss, who was also my taskmaster, known to be the strictest, most demanding, most quick to fire inexperienced teachers, came into the classroom to observe me, the students exhibited very little good behavior to praise.

My boss sat in the back of the room. The boys in the class were making animal noises, hitting each other while the girls filed their nails or read magazines. I just pretended it all wasn’t happening, and went on lecturing and tried to ask some inspiring questions. My boss, sitting in the back of the classroom, seemed to be growing bigger and bigger. After twenty minutes he left, silently. Visions of unemployment marched before my eyes.

I felt mildly victorious that I got through the rest of class without crying, but at my next free period I had to face him. I wondered if he would let me finish out the day. I walked to his office, took a deep breath, and opened the door.

He was sitting in his chair, and he looked at me long and hard. I said nothing. All I could think of was that I was not an English teacher; I had been lying to myself, pretending that everything was fine.

When he spoke, he said simply, without accusation, “You had nothing to say to them.”

“You had nothing to say to them”. he repeated.” No wonder they are bored. Why not get to the meat of literature and stop talking about symbolism. Talk with them, not at them. And more important, why do you ignore their bad behavior”? We talked. He named my problems and offered solutions. We role-played. He was the bad student, and I was the forceful yet warm teacher.

As the year progressed, we spent many hours discussing literature and ideas about human beings and their motivations. He helped me identify my weaknesses and strengths. In short, he made a teacher of me by teaching me the reality of Emerson’s words: “The secret to education lies in respecting the pupil.”

Fifteen years later I still drive that same winding road to the same school. Thanks to the help I received that difficult first year, the school is my home now. 56. It can be inferred from the story that in 1974 ________________. A.the writer became an optimistic person

A.She had blind trust in what she learnt at college. B.She didn’t ask experienced teachers for advice. C.She took too much time off to eat and sleep. D.She didn’t like teaching English literature.

58. What is the writer’s biggest worry after her taskmaster’s observation of her class? A.She might lose her teaching job. B.She might lose her students’ respect. C.She couldn’t teach the same class any more.

D.She couldn’t ignore her students’ bad behavior any more.

How do you feel about your body? Do you love your body? Some people, especially women, are unhappy with some part of their bodies. They spend a lot of time criticizing their bodies. My stomach is big! My hips are too wide! I simply hate my body!

Some people not only share these thoughts with themselves, but share them with anyone who will listen. When you speak negatively about yourself and your body, you instill(灌输) negative thoughts that take away your confidence and self-worth. These thoughts can have a great impact on your goals, how you treat yourself, and how you feel about your body and yourself. Plus, you also open the door for others to speak negatively about your. So you not only have to fight with how you feel about yourself, but how others feel about you as well.

Therefore, the next time those negative thoughts and comments come, replace them with those positive thoughts! For example, instead of saying my stomach is big, try saying something positive like, “I wish my stomach was flatter but I have some shapely legs.”

If you’re still having a hard time to give your body love and appreciation it needs, then consider how much work your body puts in for you. You may hate your arms but they can give the tightest hugs to your children. The next time you talk negatively about your legs, think about those who don’t have legs at all. An attitude of gratitude is so important!

Start your morning by looking in the mirror and telling yourself how beautiful you are. From your head to your toes and every part of it, you are beautiful. Today is the day when you accept, appreciate and love your body — you only get one! We had a discussion about whether China should devote major efforts to developing car industry. Opinions are divided on the question.

60% of the students hold the belief that China should fully develop car industry. They believe this will not only promote the development of the national economy but provide more jobs for workers as well. Moreover, cars can help to save time and improve people’s life quality.

On the other hand, 40% of them think China should limit its car industry development. Otherwise, the city traffic will be even heavier and more traffic accidents will take place. At the same time, new roads will take up more farmlands. What’s more, too many cars will cause air and noise pollution which is bad to people’s health

However, in my opinion, China should fully develop car industry. At the same time we should pay attention to our environment and our health.
