The year is 2094. It has been announced that a comet (彗星) is heading towards the Earth. Most of it will miss our plant, but two pieces will probably hit the southern half of the Earth.

On 17 July, a piece four kilometers wide enters the Earth’s atmosphere with a massive explosion. About half of the piece is destroyed, but the remaining part hits the South Atlantic at 200 times the speed of sound. The sea boils and a huge hole is made in the sea bed. Huge waves are created and spread outwards from the hole. The wall of water, a kilometer high, rushes towards southern Africa at 800 kilometers an hour. Cities on the African coast are totally destroyed and millions of people are drowned.

Before the waves reach South America, the second piece of the comet lands in Argentina. Earthquakes and volcanoes are set off in the Andes Mountains. The shock waves move north into California and all around the Pacific Ocean. The cities of Los Angeles, San Francisco and Tokyo are completely destroyed by earthquakes. Millions of people in the southern half of the earth are already dead, but the north won’t escape for long. Because of the explosions, the sun is hidden by clouds of dust, and temperatures around the world fall to almost zero. Crops are ruined. The sun won’t be seen again for many years. Wars break out as countries fight for food. A year later, no more than 10 million remain alive.

Could it really happen? In fact, it has already happened more than once in the history of the Earth. The dinosaurs were on the Earth for over 160 million years. Then 65 million years ago they suddenly disappeared. Many scientists believe that the Earth was hit by a piece of object in space. The dinosaurs couldn’t live through the cold climate that followed and they died out. Will we meet the same end?

B. Because the light and heat from the sun can not reach the earth. C. Because people there can not live at the temperature of zero. D. Because wars break out among countries.

59. By giving the example of dinosaurs, the author tries to prove_____________. A. animals could not live in the cold climate

B. what happened 65 million years ago was an invented story C. the human beings will die out in 2094

D. the Earth could be hit by other objects in space

60. We may guess that the writer is ______________.

A. worried B. practical C. a scientist D. full of imagination B.

The gray-haired lady can't wait to leave the building to search for her dad. Unless watched, she will walk in the streets in an effort to find her father, who died 30 years ago.

Not all cases of Alzheimer's disease look like this, but Alzheimer's is a serious disease that is said to be the fourth or fifth leading cause of death for people over age 75.

It is said that about three percent of the U.S. population over age 65 have Alzheimer's. In the early stages, people may exhibit short term memory loss. Some may experience changes in personality, easy to be angry. As the disease progresses, patients might lose the ability to move and may be unable to speak or move at all. This progressive disease generally lasts 8 to 10 years before death occurs.

While no one is certain what causes these changes in the brain's nerve fibers (神经纤维), their effect is certain. Alzheimer's destroys not only the patients, but also spouses (配偶), friends and families.

What should you do if you notice progressive memory loss in yourself or a loved one? Have the person examined by a doctor who is a specialist in the treatment of Alzheimer's disease. Though many reasons other than Alzheimer's disease may cause memory loss, its early diagnosis (诊断) and treatment may delay some of the most serious effects.

What feeling will you likely experience should a loved one suffer from Alzheimer's disease? A person will often go through the various stages of sadness, shock, anger, and so on. If the spouse develops the disease, you may experience hurt and disappointment when he or she doesn't remember you are married.

Life for the Alzheimer's patients and their loved ones will never be the same as the disease progresses, bringing a deep sorrow, loss and even anger towards God. No matter what feelings are present, facing them honestly will serve one better than burying them. 68. What can be inferred from the passage about the gray-haired day? A. She has been living with her father.

B. She was sad about the death of her father.

C. She can't search for her father without being watched. D. She suffers from Alzheimer's disease.

69. When people suffer from Alzheimer's disease, ________. A. their families and friends will suffer from the same disease B. their families and friends will experience mental sufferings C. they will certainly die in 8 to 10 years

D. they will forget everybody but their spouses 70. Memory loss occurs ________.

A. from Alzheimer's disease and nothing else B. from sadness, shock, anger, and so on C. for a number of reasons D. with changes in personality

71. From the passage we know that ________.

A. early treatment may stop Alzheimer's disease occurring

B. it is still unknown what causes the changes in the brain's nerve fibers

C. nerve fibers in the brain will cause Alzheimer's disease

D. when one suffers from Alzheimer's disease, he will be buried C.

The State Council declared Wednesday it would restart China's nuclear power program, ending the hiatus(中断)in nuclear construction since Japan's Fukushima nuclear disaster last year. China has been the most courageous country in building nuclear power, with the largest number of plants currently under construction. Nuclear power is facing a tough time in developed countries. The Japanese public is demanding the closure of all the country's nuclear power plants. China is at the forefront of nuclear power development. But it has been forced into this position. Rapid economic development coupled with improvements in people's life both demand more electricity. It is impossible to exploit fossil resources forever as the supply of coal, oil and natural gas is limited. China has no choice but to develop nuclear power.

China must be the safest user of nuclear power. It should become a leading country in developing nuclear power technologies and increasing the world's knowledge of nuclear power.

It needs to do at least two things. First, it needs to promote safety in nuclear power plants, based on the technologies of the West. The former Soviet Union, the US and Japan all had severe nuclear accidents, proving there are risks. China should try to remove these risks.

Second, China should establish effective communication mechanisms(机制)between the government, power plants and the public. It's wrong to think the government can control every aspect of nuclear power plant construction.

The opposition to nuclear power program in developed countries has prevented them from building new plants, but they already have many. These governments are reluctant to close these plants despite strong opposition, because they cannot find better substitutes. Nuclear power only occupies 1.8 percent of China's current electricity grid(输电网), much lower than the proportion in many developed countries. China's nuclear power plan should introduce the advantages of the technologies of other countries and also be creative in providing security. Its space technology is not the most advanced, but its launch safety measures have proven to be among the best.

China's high-profile high-speed railway development has drawn a lot of controversy, as will the active attitude towards developing nuclear power. But China cannot just copy what the developed countries have done. The development of nuclear power must be unique to China and it must be a ground-breaking success. But now, the real test lies ahead. 67. In the third paragraph the writer focuses on ______. A. the reason why China is to develop nuclear power B. the difficulty China has in developing nuclear power C. the measures China will take to develop nuclear power D. the benefits China will have by developing nuclear power

68. What attitude do people in developed countries have towards nuclear power program? A. Supportive. B. Opposed. C. Indifferent. D. Objective.

69. If the Chinese government is to develop nuclear power, it needs to ______. A. copy exactly what the developed countries have done

B. depend entirely on domestic scientists and technologies

C. avoid people’s involvement in nuclear power plant construction

D. do everything in its power to guarantee safety in nuclear power plants

70. What is the future of China’s nuclear power program according to the text? A. It will be unique but can hardly pass too many tests. B. It will be full of controversy but carried out firmly.

C. It will be on a smooth way to a ground-breaking success. D. It will receive much opposition from developed countries.

Plagiarism is one of the most serious problems in schools and colleges. It has occurred as long as there have been teachers and students, but the recent growth of the Internet has made it much worse. Recent studies show the ways to avoid plagiarism.

* Put in quotations (引号) everything that comes directly from the text.

* Paraphrase (转述),but be sure you aren’t just rearranging or replacing a few words. Instead, read over what you’ll paraphrase carefully; close the text so that you can’t see any of it; and write out the idea quite in your own words. Then check your paraphrase to make sure you haven’t accidentally used the same expressions.

In US and UK universities, plagarism is considered as cheating or dishonesty with punishment from a zero for the homework to a failing grade for the subject, to a loss of all grades for that term or an expel (开除) from the university for at least two terms.

Several methods are taken in US universities to stop students’ plagiarizing on line. Some colleges are experimenting with a program that can control the computer’s operating system during the test. Teachers also go to www. turnitin. com to catch cheaters. However, students need to be made clear of the reason why plagiarizing is wrong.

60. The word plagiarism means __________.

A. cheating in the exams B. putting others’ words in quotations C. rewriting others’ articles D. stealing others’ ideas or words 61. Which of the following is not acceptable to avoid plagiarism? A. Rearranging word orders or changing some phrases. B. Explaining others’ ideas all in our own words.

C mentioning where the information is from. D. Putting others’ words in quotations.

62. In the US and UK universities, the most serious punishment for plagiarists is _________. A. being expelled from the university for some time. B. getting a failing grade for the subject

C. losing all the grades for that term D. getting a zero for the homework 四、任务型阅读

The introduction of computerized information systems has greatly affected management control in many companies. Even a neighborhood shopkeeper may now use computers to control sales, billing, and other activities. In large companies, electronic data processing systems monitor entire projects and sets of operations.

Before the widespread use of computers, manager could not make full use of a large amount of valuable information about a company’s activities. The information either reached managers too late or was too late to be used. Today, managers are facing plenty of data processing and information instruments. In place of a few financial controls, managers can depend on computer based information systems to control activities in every area of their company. On any kinds of performance measures, the information provided by these systems helps managers compare standards with actual results, find out problems, and take corrective action before it is too late to make changes.

Now, there are about 220 million microcomputers in use in the United States-9 for every 10 citizens. It is estimated that by 2016, 90 percent of American managers will be using some sort of electronic work station. In order for managers to be sure that the computer-based information they are receiving is accurate, they need to understand how computers work. Although in most cases they do not need to learn how to program computers, managers should understand clearly how computerized information systems work; how they are developed; their limitations and costs; and the manner in which information systems may be used. Such an understanding is not difficult to achieve.

One research has found that business firms are more successful in teaching basic information about computers to business graduates that they are in teaching business subjects to computer science graduates.
