Height is just one of the features your genes (1t 1l) decide. In fact, because you have two parents, your genes provide you a height that usually lands somewhere between the height of each parent. If both your

parents are tall, then most probably you will be tall, too. But if you have questions about how tall you're going to be, ask your doctor if he or she can help you find them out.

But genes don't decide everything. For example, eating an unhealthy diet can keep you from growing to your full potential (潜力). Getting plenty of sleep and enough exercise will help you grow to the expected height.

It's natural that you're wondering how fast you should grow. there's no perfect or right answer. Generally speaking, kids grow about 6 cm a year between age 3 and the time when they start puberty. Your doctor will know how your growth has been going over the years. 2 cm here and 3 cm there make a little difference to the height you re at now. How have you been growing up to this height? What other changes may your body be going through?

Don't be amazed if you seem to have grown a lot in a very short time. Everyone has a growth spurt (高峰)during puberty. The age for starting puberty is about 10 for girls and about 11 for boys. But it can be earlier or later-between 7 and 13 for girls and 9 and 15 for boys.

You'll usually begin to notice that you re growing faster about a year after your body starts to show the first changes of puberty

( )54. Which is NOT mentioned in the passage?

A. Your height most probably depends on how tall your parents are. B. Girls age for starting puberty Is usually earlier than that for boys.

C. The features showing the first changes of puberty between boys and girls are different. D. You may be amazed sometimes when you grow too fast.

It may be hard to believe, but there are about 70 tribes(部落) living in the Amazon rainforest. These isolated people have no electricity, live in grass houses, catch animals and have little to contact with the outside world.

But now one of those tribes has made contact with modern-day society for the first time in 20 years, and it isn’t a good thing. The isolated tribe was driven into a small Brazil town near the Upper Envira River 300 kilometers away in Peru because too many trees had been cut down.

Cutting down trees and carrying the trees from a protected area most likely drove away the animals that the tribe depend on for food. In search of food, the tribe travelled east and eventually ended up far away from home in Brazil. Anthropologists(人类学家)are worried for the tribe's situation now that they have come into contact with people that aren't a part of their tribe. In the past, similar tribes who came into contact with the outside world were easily killed by diseases like cough and cold because their bodies never met those illnesses and were

not vaccinated (注射疫苗 ) against them.

Things aren't looking good for the other isolated tribes in Peru. The Peruvian government has recently decided on an oil project that would allow three companies to find oil with help from hundreds of workers. The project could kill all the emaining tribes in the rain forest, 15 of whom live in Machu Picchu, only 100 kilometers from the center of the oil exploration area.
