How often one hears children wishing they were grown-ups and, old people wishing they were young again. Each age has its pleasures and its pains, and the happiest person is the one who enjoys what each age gives him without wasting his time in useless regrets.

Childhood is a time when there are few responsibilities(责任) to make life difficult. If a child has good parents, he is fed, looked after and loved, whatever he may do. It is impossible that he will ever again in his life be given so much without having to do anything in return. What’s more, life is always giving new things to the child—things that have lost their interest for older people because they are too well known. But a child has his pains: he is not so free to do what he wishes to do; he is repeatedly being told not to do something, or being punished for what he has wrongly done.

When a young man starts to make his own living, he can no longer expect others to pay for his food, his clothes, and his room, but has to work hard if he wants to live comfortably. If he spends most of his time playing about in the way that he used to as a child, he will go hungry. And if he breaks the laws of society as he used to break the laws of his parents, he may go to prison. If, however, he works hard, keeps out of trouble and has good health, he can have the great happiness of building up for himself his own position in society.

31. According to Paragraph 2, the writer thinks that _____________. A. life for a child is fairly easy.

B. a child is always loved whatever he does

C. if much is given to a child, he must do something in return. D. only children are interested in life.

32. The main idea of the passage is that______________. A. life is not enjoyable since each age has some pains.

B. young men can have the greatest happiness if they work hard. C. childhood is the most enjoyable time in one’s time.

D. one is the happiest if he can make good use of each age in his life.

33. The paragraph following this passage will most probably discuss_______. A. examples of successful old men.

B. how to build up one’s position in society. C. joys and pains of old people.

D. what to do when one has problems in life.

D

Shakespeare, more perhaps than any other writer, made full use of the greatest resources of the English Language. Most of us use about five thousand words in our daily English; Shakespeare in his works used about twenty five thousand! There is probably no better way for a foreigner to

enjoy the richness and variety(多样性) of the English language than by studying the different ways in which Shakespeare uses it. Such a study is well worth the effort, even though some aspects(方面)of English usage, and the meaning of many words, have changed since Shakespeare’s day.

However, it is surprising that we should know little about the life of the greatest English writer. We know that Shakespeare was born in 1564 in Stratford on Avon, and that he died there in 1616. He almost certainly attended the Grammar School in the town, but of this we cannot be sure. We know he was married there in 1582 to Anne Hathaway and that he had three children. We know that he spent much of his life in London writing his works. But this is almost all that we do know.

However, what is important about Shakespeare’s life is not its details but its products, the plays and the poems. For many years scholars(学者) have been trying to add a few facts about Shakespeare’s life to the small number we have already known and for an equally long time critics(批评)have been theorizing(使理论化)about the plays. Sometimes, indeed, it seems that the poetry of Shakespeare will disappear under a great number of reviews that has been written upon it.

Luckily this is not likely to happen. Shakespeare’s people have long pleased not just the English but lovers of literature everywhere, and will continue to do so after the scholars and critics and all their works have been forgotten. 34.This passage is about __________ A. the great length of each chapter B. the great varieties in writing styles

C. the richness of the content in Shakespeare’s works

D. the rich English language used by Shakespeare in his works

35. According to the writer, which of the following remains uncertain about Shakespeare? A. His date of birth. B. His marriage. C. His life in the Grammar School. D. His date of death. 36. It can be inferred from Para 3 that___________

A. not all the reviews on Shakespeare’s works have produced good effects B. scholars have successfully collected facts about Shakespeare’s life C. critics are more interested in Shakespeare’s plays than his poetry

D. the details of Shakespeare’s life are more important than his literary works

37. The underlined words “Shakespeare’s people” in Para 4 refers to____________ A. the characters in Shakespeare’s products B. the people whose mother language is English C. the people living in Shakespeare’s day D. the readers of Shakespeare’s works
