choices marked A, B, C and D. You should decide on the best choice and mark the corresponding letter on the Answer Sheet.

Passage 1

The style of banks has changed and the bankers have already discovered a new way to do business. They lend money and collect debts through the development of the credit card.

The credit card is now providing such great convenience and opportunities to people that they can almost do anything with the help of it. They can borrow money from the banks without going there. With a credit card in hand, people can travel

around the world easily. They can check in a hotel or motel, eat in a restaurant without any cash on them. They can even rent a car in another city or country when they travel. The credit card also helps people pay their bills in time.

It is the victory for the computer. The credit cards and computers allow bankers to lend money without ever having to see a customer or to employ an extra teller. Credit card companies make a lot of benefits from the business, too.

Education is not an end, but a means(手段)to an end. In other words, we do not educate children only for the purpose of educating them. Our purpose is for life.

In some modern countries, it has been fashionable to think that by free

education for all- whether rich or poor, clever or stupid one can solve all the problems of society and build a perfect nation. But we can already see that free education for all is not enough; we find in such countries a far larger number of people with university degrees, they refuse to do what they think \thought to be dirty and shameful in such countries. But we have only to think a moment to understand that the work of a completely uneducated farmer is far more important than that of a professor. We can live without education, but we would die if we have no food. If no one cleaned our streets and moved the rubbish away from our houses, we should get terrible diseases in our towns.

In fact, when we say that all of us must be educated to fit us for life, it means

that we must be educated in such a way that, firstly, each of us can do whatever work suited to his brains and ability and, secondly, that we can realize that all jobs are necessary to society, and that is very bad to be ashamed of one’s work. Only such a type of education can be considered valuable to society.

6. The author of this passage thinks that

A. education can settle all of the world's problems B. free education won't help to solve social problems C. free education for all probably leads to a perfect world D. all the social problems can't be solved by education 7. The author wants to prove that

A. our society needs all kinds of jobs B. our society needs free education for all C. a farmer is more important than a professor

D. People with university degrees refuse to do what they think \8. One can learn from the passage A. work with hands is dirty and shameful

B. we can't regard work with hands as low work C. work with hands is the most important D. work with hands is low work

9. The purpose of education is

A. to choose the system of education

B. to prepare children mainly for their future work C. to build a perfect world

D. to let everyone receive education fit for him

10. The passage mainly tells us about of education.

A. the means B. the system C. the value Passage 3

D. the type

A great deal of nonsense is written about the character of a nation, chiefly

because many observers, influenced by national pride and prejudices feel irresistibly tempted(诱惑) to generalize(概括) about everything. In a nation of many millions of people, there are bound to be many different kinds: rich and poor, clever and stupid, good and bad, modest and conceited(自满的), patient and impatient, honest and dishonest. Moreover, a nation may develop a sort of collective character in its politics and literature, which is not recognizable in individual people. Generalizations,

therefore, tend to be unrealistic, and should be made, and accepted, with caution. One word of warning is necessary. The British people who take up appointments in Asia and Africa are not fully typical of their nation. For one thing, they are usually

specialists in one field or another. The average British person is not a specialist, and although he can read and write he is not particularly cultured in the intellectual sense. “Highbrow” is a word very often used by the common people of Britain to describe and condemn any form of intellectual culture.

Moreover, the great technical achievements of Europeans do not mean that a European is basically more intelligent than an African or Asian. The achievements are due to the handing down and sharing of knowledge and to organized training and research rather than to mental superiority; and of course, the mere possession of, say, a motor-car or washing machine and the ability to operate it, does not require any understanding of how it works.

11. To know the character of a nation, one should _______.

A. observe the behavior of the leaders B. read the literature of the nation C. never accept any generalizations D. form a sound judgment of everything

12. One reason for the difference between the British people working abroad and the

average person at home is that the former ________. A. are more intellectually cultured B. have made many foreign friends C. work much harder
