CHAPTER I INTRODUCTION

Xixiangji, authored by Wang Shifu in Yuan Dynasty (1271-1368),has long enjoyed great reputation and appreciation in the past few centuries as the unparalleled Chinese classical drama. A love story about how Yingying and Zhang Junrui, the two main characters, met, how they fell in love with each other, what obstacles they encountered and how they finally overcome them and successfully tied the knot in the end was told in this drama within the twenty scenes, five acts. It almost equals Hongloumeng, the best of the four famous works of ancient China in its reputation for it is infested with flowery language and rich fine culture of ancient China just as well as Hongloumeng (Jiang Xingyu, 1982). In fact, of all the China?s ancient drama works, Wang Shifu?s Xixiangji is the most frequently printed, most widely spread and most influential one (Shen Daren & Yan Changke, 1986). And it started to win the world?s attention since it was translated into English, French, German, Italian, Russian, Japanese and so on and so forth (Han Sheng & He Xinhui & Fan Biao, 1992). Of all the English versions, two of them were respectively translated by S.I. Hsiung and Xu Yuanchong, both of whom overcame unimaginable difficulties to accomplish the work completely from the first scene of the first act to the last scene of the last act.

1.1 Background and Significance of the Study

According to I.A. Richards, translation is “probably the most complex type of event yet produced in the evolution of the cosmos” (Richards, 1953, cited in Muriel, 2008, p.45). Of all the types, translation of the literary works is possibly the most complicated activity for the reason that it is not only the transformation of one language into another, but also the transformation between the two different cultures during the translation process of the literary works. Susan Bassnett also has mentioned in her book titled Translation Theory(Bassnett, 2010), it is impossible to find two words that have the exact same meaning in one language, not to mention in two distinct languages which are quite different from each other due to their respective
