Passage 11

Once it was considered good to keep the car engine idle a minute or two following cold starts. Today, with modern technology, the opposite is true. An engine operating under road conditions will warm up faster and run more efficiently than the one that is idling(空负荷运转). Idling just burns gas (on average, about a gallon an hour).

When you have a full tank of gas, park the car facing downhill is possible; this will prevent any gas from coming out of the tank. Parking in areas of less or no sunlight helps prevent the gas from steaming that would occur if you parked in the hot sun. Your car will stay cooler, too, and that means less gas consuming work for the air conditioner once the engine is started.

Stay away from wide-track tiers(轮胎) if you want top mileage(里程). Narrow-track tires produce less friction and thus rolling resistance. The same effect is achieved by adding three to five pounds above recommended pressure to each tire; while this won't noticeably affect your car's sliding quality, it will increase tire life and gas mileage.

Check tire pressure often, especially when the weather turns cold. The difference between winter and summer tire pressure can be as much as eight pounds. This could cost you two miles per gallon. (215 words)

Passage 13

Why is it that the more connected we get, the more disconnected I feel? Every advance in communications technology is a step back from the closeness of human interaction. With e-mail and instant messaging over the Internet, we can now communicate without seeing or talking to one another. With voice mail, you can conduct entire conversations without ever reaching anyone. If my mom has a question, I just leave the answer on her machine.

As almost every imaginable contact between human beings becomes automatic by machine, the alienation quotient goes up. You can't even call a person to get the phone number of another person anywhere. Directory assistance is almost always fully automatic by machine. Pumping gas at the station? Why say good-morning to the worker when you can swipe (刷卡) your credit card at the pump and save yourself the bother of human contact? Placing money at the bank? Why talk to a clerk who might live in the neighborhood when you can just put your credit card into the ATM?

Pretty soon you won't have the hard task of making eye contact at the grocery store. Some grocery chains are using a self-scanner so you can check yourself out, avoiding those annoying clerks who look at you and ask how you are doing.

Passage 16

Reading is the key to school success and, like any skill, it takes practice. A child learns to walk by practicing until he no longer has to think about how to put one foot in front of the other. A great athlete practices until he can play quickly accurately without thinking. Tennis players call that \

A child learns to read by sounding out the letters and decoding the words. With practice, he stumbles less and less, reading by the phrase. With automaticity, he doesn't have to think about decoding the words, so he can concentrate on the meaning of the text.

It can begin as early as first grade. In a recent study of children in Illinois schools, Alan

33

Rossman of NorthwesternUniversity found automatic readers in the first grade who were reading almost three times as fast as the other children and scoring twice as high on comprehension tests. At fifth grade, the automatic readers were reading twice as fast as the others; and still outscoring them on accuracy, comprehension and vocabulary.

\not I. Q. but the amount of time a child spends reading that is the key to automaticity, \according to Rossman. Any child who spends at least 3.5 to 4 hours a week reading books, magazines or newspapers will in all likelihood reach automaticity. At home, where the average child spends 25 hours a week watching television, it can happen by turning off the set just one night in favor of reading.

You can test your child by giving him a paragraph or two to read aloud - something unfamiliar but appropriate to his age.
