Football links between the UK and china

As the hosts of the next two Olympic Games, the UK and China are quickly forming a relation ship. British football clubs have begun to develop links and joint activities with clubs in the Chinese football leagues. Here are some of the main events so far.

In 2006, Sheffield United Football Club bought 90% of the Chengdu Five Bull Football Club. It was the first foreign club to own more than 50% of a Chinese club. The club now has a new name: Chengdu Sheffield United.

Stockport County Football Club now has links with the Football Club in Liaoning. Their name is, Stockport Tiger Star.

Bolton Wanderers Football Club has become the new partner of Wuhan Football Club. This partnership involves exchanging training ideas and players. Later this year the partners will open a centre for football development in Wuhan.

Everton Football Club is working closely with Ningbo and Guangzhou sports authorities. This joint venture includes several small projects aimed at developing football for young people and training football coaches.

Cardiff City is developing a partnership with Xiamen Superleague Club, Lanshi. The two cities are ‘twins’ and are therefore developing many links and joint activities to encourage contact between the people of the two cities.

Britain has also invited several Chinese players to play in its professional football league. Dalian player, Sun Jihai, became the first Chinese player to score a goal in a Premiership match when he joined Manchester City Football Club in 2002. Since then other Chinese players have joined English football teams, Li Tie has joined the Everton Football Club and Dong Fangzhuo the Manchester United Football Club.

These exciting developments are just the beginning of more positive international relations in the world of football. Watch this space for further developments.

My childhood

In some ways I think I am far too young to write about my life. My life has just started and my life in table tennis is far from over. I know that many young people are interested in my experiences and I would like to encourage children as much as I can.

When I was born, the ‘one-child’ practice was not in place yet, so my parents could have had more than one child. But my father only wanted one child, so that he could give that one child the best of everything. Lucky me! First I went to the nursery school nearest to my home, but later my parents decided to take me to the Provincial No.1 Nursery School, as it was the best one at that time. It was a long way from my home , and more expensive. But, my parents wanted me to have the best.

My father is a table tennis coach, but my parents never pushed me into playing. My first nursery shared a compound with Heilongjiang Provincial Sports Team. After school we went to the training ground and I loved to play with all the balls there. When I arrived at Provincial No. 1 Nursery, k joined the table tennis class and my father was invited to bet the coach. At that time I liked watching the sport more than playing it. When I was about six, I suddenly decided I wanted to play. I asked my father to make me a bat, and I started to learn to play with my teacher, even though my father was a much better coach.

By the time I started primary school, I loved table tennis so much that I had to play every day. I became hungry for success and my parents still tell funny stories about how I loved to win. In about 1982, my mother worked for a local office and she knew the local policemen quite well. When the policemen found out that my father was the coach of Provincial Table Tennis Team, they said: “How about a friendly match with your husband’s team?” One of my mother’s colleagues said: “ Never mind her husband’s team, you should play his son!” After that, all the policemen wanted to play me. I beat all the policemen that I played against.

Even though I loved table tennis, I didn’t imagine for a second I would play professionally. I t was just a hobby for me , as I loved lots of other things as well, such as painting and calligraphy. As a matter of fact, my childhood dreams were of becoming a soldier, a scientist, or something else very modern—certainly not a table tennis player for the national team or the world champion. The interesting thing is that sometimes what happens to us is not what we dreamt of at all.

Drama in the 3000metres

The crowd fell silent as the starter called the competitors in the men’s 3000 metres to the starting line. As the athletes were moving to their marks, all eyes were on two runners Mark, the favourite for the gold medal, and a newcomer to the athletic world, Jim.

Mark was very experienced and was thought by many to be the finest 3000 metres runner in the country. Until a few months before, Jim was almost unknown outside his hometown. But, he had amazed athletics fans by leaving his opponents far behind him at one athletics meeting after another. Many people thought Jim would do very well to finish second or even third. It was going to be an exciting race!

The starter raised his pistol. Bang! The race had started. For the first half, Jim ran with Mark in the leading group. At the 1700 metre mark, Jim was leading with Mark in second place about a metre behind. Suddenly the crowds, who had been cheering, fell silent. Mark had fallen and crashed onto the grass on the side of the track. He tried to get up, but he had been injured and was out of the race.

The crowd believed that Jim was responsible for tripping Mark and they began to shout insults at him. Jim looked back, slowed his pace, then went on with the race. But the race was over for Jim too, he slowly dropped back and finished in seventh place. Jim was very upset by what had happened.

Later, after the judges had studied the video of the race, they decided that Jim had not been to blame. Jim went to see Mark and Mark really appreciated it. “I’m sorry for...” “It’s not your fault. I got cramp in my leg when I was running.” Mark interrupted Jim. “Such a thing rarely happens to me. I’ve got to talk with the doctor.”

The two went on to become good friends and were often seen training together.
