Why? After all, so many people would feel disappointed if they had never married ... if they hadn’t finished school ... if they were old and lost both their legs and were living in a nursing home. Why does Ralph Wiley feel life has been good to him?

“I just do,” he says, “I get in bed by myself. I go to the bathroom by myself. I made my bed myself yesterday.”

The college entrance exam may not be far away, but Senior 3 student Li Weijia spent last Saturday exploring Beijing Jiaotong University.

This doesn’t count as a day off, though. The 17 - year - old girl wanted to see the campus for herself rather than make a blind choice in selecting a university.

“A campus tour gives me the chance to experience university first hand before I start,” explained Li, who must make a final decision in two months time. “It also helps me to focus on my goals and, therefore, inspires me to study harder.”

Tens of thousands of Senior 3 students and their parents are busy doing the same thing this month as up to 20 universities and colleges in Beijing open their doors to would - be - freshmen. This is the third time that universities in the capital have run campus tours. Other cities, such as Shanghai and Guangzhou have introduced similar programmes.

On a campus tour, students can see their future domitories (宿舍), chat with their future classmates and get a taste of the place where they could spend at least the next four years. Peking University will open some departments, libraries, dormitories and dinning halls to high school students on April 25, and introduce certain major.

Students are also advised only to visit the campuses they are most interested in. 39. Why do Senior 3 students do campus tours by themselves?

Kenya Wildlife Park

Ah, Africa! My favorite place in the whole wide world. It’s the only place where you can lie in bed at night and listen to hyenas (土狼) and lions. That’s exactly what I did on a recent trip to Kenya plus a whole lot more.

My friend Pat and I visited the Maasai Mara. Many other wildlife parks compete for the title of “most famous” or “Most popular”. But the Maasai Mara boasts the largest wildlife population in East Africa. If you like wildlife, it’s a must - see tourist destination (visited place).

We made a 400 - km trip to the park from Nairobi, Kenya’s capital, by car. We know we were getting close to the park when we started seeing the antelope (羚羊) right next to the road. We also saw many Maasai people - men, women and children dressed in red, driving their cows along dirty roads.

We checked in at our camp and then headed out into the park. We returned with plenty of photos of what we’d seen: elephants, three lions, antelopes and more.

The next morning, we readied ourselves for our next big adventure: a hot - air balloon ride! From high in the air, we saw giraffes (长颈鹿), elephants and many different kinds of antelope on the ground below. After almost an hour in the air, we touched down for breakfast beside the Mara River.

Later that day, Pat and I drove to the western side of the park. Philip, our guide, didn’t just tell me where to drive. He also pointed out at least 15 lions!

After an exhausting (tiring) day, Pat and I were more than happy to check in to a Maasai - style hotel and relax. The next day, from the window of our hotel room, Pat and I observed the animals in the valley below. We saw two lions hunting an antelope. And we watched the hippos (河马), giraffes and elephants in the valley below for hours. Though the animals were too far to hear us, we couldn’t help but whisper! It was the most serene scene neither of us had ever experienced.

Would I go back? Definitely!

43. Maasai Mara Park is thought __________.

A. to be the most popular tourist destination world

B. to have more wild animals than any other parks in East Africa

C. to be famous for its beautiful scenery

D. to be the best place where rare animals can be preserved from extinction

A. the author wants to advertise for Maasai Mara Park B. the author has been to Maasai Mara Park several times C. the author loves wildlife and is keen on traveling

5

D. the author has broad knowledge of wildlife and Africa

D

Communication

Living and dealing with kids can be a tough job these days, but living and dealing with parents can be even tougher.

If I have learned anything in my 16 years, it is that communication is very important, both when you disagree and when you get along. With any relationship, you need to let other person know how you are feeling. If you are not able to communicate, you drift apart. When you are mad at your parents, or anyone else, not talking to them doesn’t solve anything.

Communication begins with the concerns of another. It means that you can’t just come home from school, go up to your room and ignore everyone. Even if you just say “Hi”, and see how their day was for five minutes, it is better than nothing.

If you looked up the word “communication” in a dictionary, it would say “the exchange of ideas, the conveyance (表达) of information, correspondence (通信), means of communication : a letter or a message”. To maintain a good relationship, you must keep communication strong. Let people know how you feel, even if it’s just by writing a note.

When dealing with parents, you always have to make them feel good about how they are doing as a parent. If you are trying to make them see something as you see it, tell them that you’ll listen to what they have to say, but ask them politely to listen to you. Yelling or walking away only makes the situation worse.

This is an example: one night, Sophie went to a street party with her friends. She knew she had to be home by midnight after the fireworks, but she didn’t feel she could just ask to go home. That would be rude. After all, they had been nice enough to take her along with them. Needless to say, she was late getting home. Her parents were mad at first, not when Sophie explained why she was late, they weren’t as mad and let the incident go. Communication is the key factor here. If Sophie’s parents had not been willing to listen, Sophie would have been in a lot of trouble. Communication isn’t a one-way deal: it goes both ways. Just remember: if you get into a situation like Sophie’s, telling the other person how you feel-listening is the key factor to communication.

47. In the writer’s view, dealing with parents is __________ than with children. A. more difficult B. easier C. more uninteresting D. more interesting 48. The main idea of the second paragraph is __________. A. the importance of friendship

B. make your feeling known to others C. the importance of communication

D. the disagreement between generations

49. When parents and children are in communication, the key to a happy relationship is that __________.

A. children should always obey their parents B. they should be equal

C. parents play the leading part

D. both make the opposite know their feelings

6

50. The example in this passage proves that ___________.

A. Sophie’s parents are willing to listen to her B. Sophie is very polite to her parents

C. Sophie did well in explaining her being late

D. communication is the solution to misunderstanding

51. All the following statements are correct except “___________”. A. If you don’t agree with others, you’d better let them know B. It is better to say “Hi” to others than say nothing C. If you are not able to communicate, walk away D. Communication is a two - way deal

International Year of Mountains

It’s perhaps not common knowledge, but 2004 is in fact the International Year of Mountains and time to take a short rest from popular mountain sports, climbing up, snowboarding down and jumping off these splendid natural wonders, to consider some of the very serious problems faced by mountains and mountain people.

Problems

A meeting organized by the United Nations in Tokyo in February in 2004, identified three main areas that need to be addressed to ensure the future safety of the world’s mountains. These are: the protection of mountain ecosystems (生态系统), the encouragement of peace and stability in mountain regions, and the assistance of mountain people to reach their goals.

Ecosystems

From the busy cities of India to the farmlands of California, more than half the world’s population is dependent on mountains for their fresh water supply. Global warming, deforestation (砍伐森林), mining and heavy farming seriously damage mountain ecosystems and put fresh water sources at risk.

Peace and Stability

Mountain regions host a large proportion of the world’s wars. Territorial and drug related conflicts (冲突) have bad effects on the local environment and the lives of the local people. Fighting makes essential tasks such as farming impossible. Landmines make large areas of potential (潜在性) farming ground unusable. Also schools, roads, bridges and other important infrastructure (设施) is left in rains.

Mountain People

Mountain people are among the poorest, least represented groups on the earth. They face many hardships and each day can be “a test of survival”. Damage to mountain ecosystems worsens their situation and leaves them even more vulnerable (易受伤害的) to disease and natural disasters such as floods and landslides. It’s been recommended that forest profits should be reinvested in mountain communities and the people living there should be given a stronger political voice. As this year’s slogan says, “We are all mountain people”.

52. Why is 2004 the time to take a short rest from some popular mountain sports? A. Because 2004 is International Year of Mountains.

B. Because popular mountain sports are not common in 2004.

C. Because these sports may cause some serious environmental problems.

7

D. Because these sports are too dangerous to the mountain people. 53. Which group of the following may cause the lack of fresh water? A. Disease and natural disasters. B. Some popular mountain sports. C. Mining and heavy farming.

D. Fighting for interests.

54. What should NOT be done in order to improve the living condition of mountain people? A. More money should be put in mountainous area.

B. Officials should pay enough attention to mountain people in making the policy. C. Mountain ecosystems should be protected.

D. Mountain sports should be widespread throughout the world. 55. What does the slogan “We are all mountain people” imply?

A. The fate of mountain people is directly connected with that of people living at sea level. B. We all came from the mountain regions though some of us now lived in cities. C. Our forefathers were all mountain people.

D. What we eat and drink mainly comes from the mountains.

As the standard of living is getting higher , more and more people are buying cars . It seems that the car has become an important part of our life . Some people even think that they can’t live without it . But I think the car is a great burden rather than a tool for us . It’s very expensive to buy a car . Besides , you’ll spend a lot of money repairing the cars . And you’ll find it hard to find a parking place because more and more people buy cars . What’s more , cars can cause air pollution and accidents . Indeed it is quick . But do you think it can save your time in rush hour ?
