The 2008 Beijing Olympic Games are drawing near. Are you eager to enjoy watching the matches or start serving as a volunteer? First, you need to know about audience manners.

The behaviour of courtside audiences is considered to be an important part of sporting culture. In 2004, after world champion Stephen Hendry lost to Ding Junhui in the China Open Snooker Championships, he complained of the noise from Chinesespectators. Perhaps you and your classmates could discuss how to behave while in the audience at the Olympic Games.

Most sporting arenas have rules for spectators written on the back of the tickets. Read your ticket carefully before you arrive. Try to reach your seat half an hour before the start of the event and don’t leave when a game is in progress. When you leave, remember to take away your soft drink bottles and other trash(垃圾).

During exciting games, try to control yourself. Don’t criticize the performance of players and coaches. Be careful with your words, since some may cause anger among other people in the audience.

Applause is a special form of body language you can use to communicate with players. But you should do it properly. When players first appear, clap your hands together to welcome them, but don’t go on for too long. After an excellent performance, applaud warmly. If someone fails, your applause will help encourage them.

Applause is not welcome, however, while a game is in progress and players need to keep their concentration. Various sports have various rules for the audience.

Enjoying artistic gymnastics requires silence. But lots of cheering can really help basketball and football players. Snooker and table tennis courtside behavior includes a ban on flash photography. Mobile phones are not allowed in shooting centres.

To be a good spectator, you should take time to learn the game-specific rules and related culture of each event. 56. What does the word “spectators” mean in the second paragraph? A. players

B. audiences

C. coaches

D. organizers

57. What should you do during an exciting game? A. Control yourself C. Praise the players

B. Keep quiet D. Cheer the players

58. When can’t you clap your hands? A. When players first appear C. When someone fails

B. When an excellent performance is over

D. When a player is finishing a very difficult performance 59.What is the best title of this text?

A. How to be a good audience of Beijing Olympic Games B. How to support players at Beijing Olympic Games C. How to control yourself at Beijing Olympic Games D. How to be a volunteer at Beijing Olympic Games

Are British people Europeans? This may seem a strange question to Africans and Asians, who tend to think of all white people as Europeans. But the British, when they are in Britain, do not regard themselves as Europeans. The Europeans, to them, are those rather excitable foreigners from the other side of the English Channel, who have never learnt how to speak English. Europe is known as “the Continent”, a place full of interest for British tourists, but also the source of almost all the wars in which Britain has ever been involved. Thus although geographically speaking Britain is a part of Europe, the fact that it is a separate island has made its people feel very, very insular(孤立的). They feel, and in many ways are, different from the rest of Europe, and they sometimes annoy continental nations by failing to support them, or even to understand them, in time of need.

Where did British people come from? This is an extraordinary interesting question, since they are a mixture of many different races, and all these races invaded(侵略)Britain at different times from Europe. Nobody knows very much about Britain before the Romans came during the first century B. C., but there had been at least three invasions before that. The first of these was by a dark-haired Mediterranean race called the Iberians. The other two were by Celtic tribes: first the Gaels, whose

descendants are the modern Scots and Irish, come of whom still speak the Gaelic language; and second the Britons, who gave their name to the whole island of Britain. These were the people whom the Romans conquered. The Romans gave the Britons a good deal of their civilization, but they never settled in Britain in very large numbers, so the British race survived until the overthrow of the Roman Empire by the “barbarians”, i. e. the numerous Germanic tribes which overran the whole of Western Europe.

60.The purpose of the passage is to ______.

A.talk about Europeans

B.discuss the origin of British people C.argue for the superiority of British people D.compare the Europeans with Africans and Asians A.most people think white people are Europeans B.there are many Africans and Asians living in Europe C.white men are Europeans in the eyes of Africans and Asians D.the British people think of themselves as Europeans A.They are different from those people in the continent.

B.They sometimes fail to support the continental countries in time of need. C.They are separated geographically from the continent. D.They are considered very difficult to understand. A.Europeans are those who are unable to speak English

B.those who invaded Britain came from the other side of the English Channel C.Britain is a place full of interest for those excitable foreigners D.Britain is the source of almost all the wars in Europe

The traditional tent cities at festivals such as Glastonbury may never be the same again. In a victory of green business that is certain to appeal to environmentally-aware music-lovers, a design student is to receive financial support to produce eco-friendly tens made of cardboard that can be recycled after the bands and the crowds have gone home.

Major festivals such as Glastonbury throw away some 10,000 abandoned tents at the end of events each year. For his final year project at the University of the West of England, James Dunlop came up with a material that can be recycled. And to cope with the British summer, the cardboard has been made waterproof.

61.It can be known from the passage that ______.

62.Why do the British people feel very insular?

63.It can be inferred from the passage that ______.

Taking inspiration from a Japanese architect, who has used cardboard to make big buildings including churches, Mr Dunlop used cardboard material for his tents, which he called Myhabs.

The design won an award at the annual New Designers Exhibition after Mr Dunlop Graduated from his product design degree and he decided to try to turn it into a business.

To raise money for the idea, he toured the City’s private companies which fund new businesses and found a supporter in the finance group Mint. He introduced his idea to four of Mint’s directors and won their support. Mint has committed around £500,000 to MyHab and taken a share of 30 per cent in Mr Dunlop’s business. The first Myhabs should be tested at festivals this summer, before being marketed fully next year.

Mr Dunlop said that the design, which accommodates two people, could have other uses, such as for disaster relief and housing for the London Olympics.

For music events, the cardboard houses will be ordered online and put up at the sites by the Myhab team before the festival-goers arrive and removed by the company afterwards, They can be Personalized and the company will offer reductions on the expense if people agree to sell exterior(外部的) advertising space.

The biggest festivals attract tens of thousands of participants, with Glastonhury having some 150,000 each year. Altogether there are around 100 annual music festivals where people camp in the UK. The events are becoming increasingly environmentally conscious.

64.“Eco-friendly tents” in paragraph 1 refer to tents .

A.independently with an interest-free loan from Mint B.with the approval of the City’s administration C.in partnership with a finance group D.with the help of a Japanese architect

A.an attempt at developing recyclable tents B.some efforts at making full use of cardboards C.an unusual success of a graduation project

D.the effects of using cardboard tents on music festivals D

Hints on safety

Nearly everyone is attracted to water, whether it be the sea, canals, rivers or the village pond. Beautiful as it is, water should be regarded with respect as it can be dangerous. Around 300 children up to the age of ten die each year from drowning. It should be every parent’s responsibility to ensure that both he and the children swim safely and that as the child gets older, he has some knowledge of life-saving and artificial respiration(人工呼吸).

The basic rules of water safety are:

-don’t leave small children playing alone in water -never swim an hour before or an hour after a main meal

-if it’s a danger area, find out before you start swimming where the lifeguard is or where a life-belt is available -as children get older, try to teach them to remain calm in an emergency

-look out for warning signs to see whether you’re in a danger area (see under this). Be especially careful of inland stretches of water-pools, reservoirs(水库)and dykes(沟)where there are often fewer people about than at the seaside.

The way people hold to the belief that a fun – filled,

pain free life equals

happiness actually reduces their chances of ever gaining real happiness. If fun and pleasure are equal to happiness, then pain must be equal to unhappiness. But in fact, the opposite is true – more often than not things that lead to happiness involve some pain.

As a result, many people avoid the very source of true happiness. They fear the pain unavoidably brought by such things – marriage, raising children, professional achievements and self – improvement.

A.Everyone is attracted to the water in the village pond. B.It is attractive but dangerous.

C.It is beautiful and respected by everybody. D.The sea, the canals and the rivers affect the weather. A.Useful advice C.Public comments

B.Expert experiences D.First aid suggestions

69.We can infer from the passage that the word “hints” used in the title means “______”

70.What does the writer think parents should make sure their children know?

A.How to be able to save his or her own life. B.How to get knowledge of artificial respiration. C.How to swim and breathe under water.

D.How to swim safely and how to save other people’s lives if they get into trouble in the water. A.Do not use a surfboard here.

C.This area is not for ordinary swimming. D.Dangerous animals around.

71.What is the meaning of the sign below mean? B.Lifeguards patrol this area.

Ask a bachelor why he resists marriage even though he finds dating to be less and less satisfying. If he is honest, he will tell you that he is afraid of making a promise. For a promise is in fact quite painful. The single life is filled with fun, adventure and excitement. Marriage has moments, but they are not its most distinguishing features.

Couples with babies are lucky to get a whole night’s sleep or three – day vacation. I don’t know parents who would choose the word fun to describe raising children. But couples who decide not to have children never know thejoys of watching a child grow up or of playing with a grandchild.

Understanding and accepting that true happiness has nothing to do with fun is one of the most liberating realizations. It liberates time: now we can devote more hours to activities that truly increase our happiness. It liberates money: buying that expensive mobile phone or those fancy clothes that will do nothing to increase our happiness now seems pointless. And it liberates us from envy: we now understand that all those who are always having so much fun actually may not be happy at all. 72.What the author is mainly trying to tell us is .

A.a happy life means life full of fun and without pain B.happiness often goes hand in hand with pain C.it is important to avoid pain in order to be happy D.one must know how to gain happiness

A.he is unwilling to take on family responsibilities B.he fears it will put an end to all his fun and adventure C.he believes that dating will be more cheerful D.he finds more fun in dating than in marriage A.a desperate attempt

C.a rewarding task D.a pain free life

A.have as much fun as possible during one’s lifetime B.make every effort to liberate oneself from time and money C.put up with pain under all circumstances D.be able to distinguish happiness from fun

B.a thankless job

73. According to the author, the bachelor resists marriage mainly because

74.Raising children, in the author’s opinion, is .

One Possible Version:

With the development of advertising, ads have been connected with people’s life. Is it good or bad? We had a discussion. Some people think advertisements don’t tell the fact about the products advertised. Also, they take up too much time on TV and the radio, and cover too much space in newspapers and magazines, which waste a lot of paper. What’s worse, there are some false advertisements that cheat people into buying their things. Therefore, they believe advertisements should be stopped.

Some other people think advertisements can help us make better choices about what to buy by offering us the latest information about various goods. Moreover, many well done advertisements are popular and entertaining, which appeal to the consumers. However, too many advertisements can be annoying. So we should develop advertising properly.
