Sunday is more like Monday than it used to be. Places of business that used to keep daytime“ business hours” are now open late into the night. And on the Internet, the hour of the day and the day of the week have become irrelevant(不相关的). A half century ago in the United States, most people experienced strong and precise dividing lines between days of rest and days of work, school time and summer time. Today the boundaries still exist, but they seem not clear.

The law in almost all states used to require stores to close on Sunday; in most, it no longer does. It used to keep the schools open in all seasons except summer;

in most, it still does. And whether the work week should strengthen its legal limits,or whether it should become more“ flexible”, is often debated. How should we, as a society, organize our time? Should we go even further in relaxing the boundaries of time until we liv e in a world in which every minute is much like every other?

These are not easy questions even to ask. Part of the difficulty is that we rarely recognize the“law of time” even when we meet it face to face. We know as children that we have to attend school a certain number of hours, a certain number of days, a certain number of years—but unless we meet the truant officer(学监), we may well think that we should go to school due to social custom and parents’ demand rather than to the law. As adults we are familiar with“extra pay for overtime working,” but less familiar with the fact that what constitutes(构成) “overtime” is a matter of legal definition. When we turn the clock forward to start daylight saving time, have we ever thought to ourselves:“ Here is the law in action”? As we shall see, there is a lot of law that has great influence on how we organize and use time: compulsory education law, overtime law, and daylight saving law—as well as law about Sunday closing, holidays, being late to work ,time zones, and so on. Once we begin to look for it, we will have no trouble finding a law of time to examine and assess.

2.The author raises the questions in Paragraph 2 to introduce the fact that people________.

A. fail to make full use of their time

B. enjoy working overtime for extra pay

C. are unaware of the law of time

D. welcome flexible working hours

3.According to the passage, most children tend to believe that they go to school because they________.

A. need to acquire knowledge

B. have to obey their parents

C. need to find companions

D. have to observe the law

4.What is t he main idea of the passage?

A. Our life is governed by the law of time.

B. How to organize time is not worth debating.

C. New ways of using time change our society.

D. Our time schedule is decided by social customs.

Last week my youngest son and I visited my father at his new home in Tucson, A rizona. He moved there a few years ago,and I was eager to see his new place and meet his friends.

My earliest memories of my father are of a tall, handsome, successful man devoted to his work and family, but uncomfortable with his children. As a child I loved him;as a school girl and young adult (成年人) I feared him and felt bitter about him. He seemed unhappy with me unless I got straight A’s and unhappy with my boyfriends

if their fathers were not as “successful” as he was. Whenever I w ent out with him on weekends, I used to struggle to think up things to say, feeling on guard.

On the first day of my visit, we went out with one of my father’s friends for lunch at an outdoor cafe. We walked along that afternoon, did some shopping, ate on the street table, and laughed over my son’s funny facial expressions. Gone was my father’s critical (挑剔的) air and strict rules. Who was this person I knew as my father, who seemed so friendly and interesting to be around? What had held him back before?

The next day my dad pulled out his childhood pictures and told me quite a few stories about his own childhood. Although our times together became easier over the years, I never felt closer to him at that moment. After so many years, I’m at last seeing another side of my father. And in so doing, I’m delighted with my_new_friend. My dad, in his new home in Arizona, is back to me from where he was.

5. Why did the author feel bitter about her father as a young adult?

A. He was silent most of the time.

B. He was too proud of himself.

C. He did not love his children.

D. He expected too much of her.

6. When the author went out with her father on weekends, she would feel________.

A. nervous

B. sorry

C. tired

D. safe

7. What does the author think of her father after her visit to Tucson?

A. More critical.

B. More talkative.

C. Gentle and friendly.

D. Strict and hard working.

8. The underlined words “my new friend” in the last paragraph refer to________.

A. the author’s son

B. the author’s father

C. the friend of the author’s father

D. the café owner

An international team of fertility scientists made news last year by announcing they will clone human beings mainly to help infertile couples, despite strong opposition from religious groups and from scientists cloning animals. Earlier this year, a member of the team, Italian physician Severino Antinori, claimed they have produced the first cloned humans. But this was contradicted by his US counterpart, Panayiotis Zavos, who nevertheless reaffirmed their determination to ma ke cloned human beings a reality.

Human cloning has been contemplated at least as far back as five years ago when Dolly the cloned sheep was unveiled. A clone is an identical copy of an individual. There are natural clones, produced when the fertilised egg splits up into two or more cells, each of which develops into a foetus (胎儿) , resulting in identical twins or triplet.

What would you feel if one day you see another you appear in your home? Will you feel scared? Or you are just overexcited? No one can offer a definite answer.
