Many say their most painful moments are saying goodbye to those they love. After watching Cheryl, my cousin, watch her mother suffer for six months before dying, I think the most painful moments can be in waiting to say goodbye.

Cheryl made the two-hour trip over and over to be with her mother. They spent long afternoons holding hands and sharing memories.

Each time she kissed her mother before leaving, her mother would feel sad and say, “I’m sorry you drove so far and sat for so long, and I didn’t stay up long to talk with you.”

Cheryl would tell her not to worry. It didn’t matter. But still her mother felt she had let her down and said sorry at each goodbye.

“Mom, do you remember when I made the high school basketball team?” Cheryl’s mother nodded.

“You’d drive so far and sit for so long, and I never even left the bench to play. You waited for me

When we think of food farming we usually think of green fields in the country, outside the city. Sam Chee works on a very different type of farm, in the center of the Canadian city of Toronto. “We grow fruit, vegetables and herbs,” says Sam. “But not many people know the farm is here. You can’t see it from the street. We’re on top of an office building, 50 meters above the ground.”

Rooftop farming is becoming popular in cities like Toronto, New York and London. The roofs of buildings are often just wasted space, but this space can be used for growing good fresh food, right in the middle of the city. Sam explains how it works. “We grow everything in big boxes—there are hundreds of them. We catch rainwater to water the plants when the weather is dry.”

The rooftop farm where Sam works belongs to a restaurant called Green Garden, on the ground floor of the building. The farm produces about half the restaurant’s fruit and vegetables. Sam believes that the rooftop farm is what makes Green Garden special. “We help to keep food production local. We don’t need to transport this food from anywhere and that saves energy. It’s better for the environment.”

The food from the rooftop is fresher too. “When the fruit and vegetables are ripe we can pick them and use them right away. They taste better when they’re really fresh,” says Sam. “I hope that there will be more rooftop farms in the city soon. It could be the farming of the future.” 22. Green Garden’s rooftop farm is________.

A. the only one in the world B. in the middle of a small town C. one of many in cities around the world D. near the countryside of a city 23. The fruit and vegetables Sam grows are ________.

A. used in a restaurant in the same building B. sold to restaurants to cook dishes for people C. taken to a restaurant in another building D. given to people who work in the building 24. Sam thinks the food from the rooftop is better than that bought from other places because ________.

A. it is much cheaper and fresher B. it tastes better and is better for the environment C. it uses space which was being wasted D. it can’t be bought in the local stores 25. According to the passage, which of the following is RIGHT?

You probably know many of the things that you can do with the hundreds of different muscles in your body. But have you ever thought about how the muscles in an animal’s body aredifferent from yours? An animal’s muscles aremade to do the things that are most importantfor its life.

Lions are hunters. They depend on theirability to catch other animals. Lionsmust be fast in order to catch their prey(猎物). Thepowerful muscles in their back legs allow them torun at speeds of more than 30 miles per hour. They can also jump a distance of more than 35feet. The strong muscles in their frontlegs help them catch their prey.

Snakes also use their muscles for huntingprey and for movement, but their muscles work in very different ways than lions’ do.Because snakes do not have any legs, they use theirmuscles to push against the ground or otherobjects to move themselves forward. Their muscles also allowthem to eat things that seem much toolarge. For example, a snake may eat an egg thatis larger than the width of its body. How does this happen? The snake’s strong neck muscles work together to push the egg down the mouth.

The elephant’s long nosehas a lot of muscles. Scientists believe that the nose alone has more than 100,000 muscles! This is because the elephant uses its nose muchin the same way that people use their hands andfingers. Even though the nose is large, it canperform surprisingly tasks. For example,an elephant can pick up a small leaffrom the ground. The nose can also be apowerful tool. An elephant can use its nose topick up a tree by its roots or even to lift a babyelephant.

The great muscles of these animalsseem pretty unbelievable. But the muscles in yourbody work exactly the way you need them to.After all, it might be fun to be able to jump adistance of 30 feet, but as a human being, thereis just not much need for it.

27. The underlined word “hunters” in Paragraph 2 means persons or animals that ________.

A. keep animals for fun B. raise animals for meat C. catch animals for food D. run after animals for exercise 28. All the following are talked about in the passage EXCEPT.

Muscles in an animal’s body arenot the same as a human’s. 29. According to the passage, what makes the muscles in your body different from an animal’s?

A. The exercise.

B. Your parents.

C. The environment. D. Your needs.

30. Which of the following shows the structure (结构) of the passage? (P = Paragraph)
