A Comparison between Ningbo Port and Nagoya Port

1. A Brief Introduction of Two Ports

The Port of Ningbo-Zhoushan is a Chinese port, the busiest in the world in terms of cargo throughput. The Port of Ningbo-Zhoushan complex is a modern multi-purpose deep water port, consisting of inland, estuary, and coastal harbors. In history time, Ningbo port is one of the most important trade and transportation ports. As one of the four deep-ports in China, Ningbo port has many advantages, such as location, fairway, coastline resources. The Port of Ningbo is a multi-functional port that integrates its modern deep-water facilities across the inner river, the estuary, and the sea. The Port of Ningbo has shipping connections with over 600 ports in 100 countries.

The Port of Nagoya, located in Ise Bay, is the largest and busiest trading port in Japan, accounting for about 10% of the total trade value of Japan. Notably, this port is the largest exporter of cars in Japan and where the Toyota Motor Corporation exports most of its cars. It has piers in Nagoya, Tōkai, Aichi, Chita, Aichi,Yatomi, Aichi, and Tobishima, Aichi. The tow ports comes from different countries, and they have something in common and something different. The Port of Nagoya is located in the center of Japan, and serves as the gateway for the Chubu Region, which thrives as one of Japan's leading manufacturing centers for such industries as automobiles, aerospace, and machinery, while also possessing a large consumer market. The Port is linked to many countries and regions worldwide by liner trade services, in addition to domestic ferry services to Tohoku and Hokkaido.

2. The SWOT of the Two Ports

2.1 The Strength of Two Ports

Ningbo is located in central China's mainland coastline and it is mainland

China's famous deep-water port. Ningbo Port is one of the four deep-water ports along the coast of the mainland. The entry channel for the Port of Ningbo is 22.1 meters (72.5 feet) deep in most places. Ships of up to 300 thousand tons can easily navigate the harbor with the tides. The Port of Ningbo also offers many opportunities for development and construction because it has a deep-water coastline of more than 120 kilometers (74.6 miles). Behind the deep-water coastline is a wide, flat dockland suitable for storage, warehousing, and marine industries. Ningbo port takes Ningbo as the basis with the Hangzhou Bay Bridge, Yong Jin Expressway completion, Jin Yong railway also in planning and construction. Its direct economic hinterland is Zhejiang

Province,

and its

indirect

economic hinterland

is

Shanghai, Jiangsu, Anhui, Jiangxi, Hunan and Hubei which is along the Yangtze river.

The Port of Nagoya is located in the center of Japan, and serves as the gateway for the Chubu Region, which thrives as one of Japan's leading manufacturing centers for such industries as automobiles, aerospace, and machinery, while also possessing a large consumer market. An advanced road network around the Port provides efficient access to the north Chubu Region through the Chuo and Tokai-Hokuriku Expressways, and enhances east-west traffic with the Ise Bay Highway, which bisects the port. This highway is connected to the Tomei Expressway in the east and the Higashi-meihan Expressway in the west. Providing access to the Central Japan International Airport, or Centrair, is the Chita Transversal Road, which is linked to the Chita Hanto Road as well as the Nishi Chita Industrial Road, both of which lead to the Port of Nagoya. With this arterial road network in the area, the Port of Nagoya is expected to grow dramatically as a major transport junction for sea, land and air.

2.2 The Weakness of Two Ports

The infrastructure of Ningbo port is not completed. At first, Port through capacity is insufficient which is difficult to meet the needs of the rapid growth of demand. Second is the rapid growth of the throughput of Ningbo port. Port transportation pressure leads

to

frequent traffic

jams.

Thirdly,

The modern logistics is the outcome of knowledge economy. And the completed computer networking management has not been built. And finally, the function of Ningbo port is still mainly based on traditional handling, storage and transport. Informationalized level is not well enough.

Though the Nagoya port is a informationalized port and there are also some weaknesses. The berth is 295 which is less than Ningbo port. Because of the lack of natural resources inland, so the import is larger than the export. The export trade volume is less than Ningbo port.

2.3 The Opportunity of Two Ports

From the international perspective, with the the shift of the transportation core of international containers towards the Asian-Pacific region, the transportation market of export containers is prospective, and this provides many opportunities and a promising market environment for the development of Ningbo-Zhoushan port.

First, Zhejiang government pays much attention to Ningbo-Zhoushan port. It has proposed strategies for the construction of modern international port city, and formulated relative preferential measures for improving the development of Ningbo-Zhoushan port.

Second, the completion of Hangzhou Bay Bridge provides regional advantage for Ningbo-Zhoushan port. It improves the transportation condition, shifts Ningbo from a destination city to a regional hub city and increases the freightage from both sides of the north and south of Hangzhou Bay Bridge.

Third, compared with land transportation, water transportation is much cheaper, Ningbo-Zhoushan port can develop in land water transportation to explore new hinterland.

The area around the Port of Nagoya hosts Japan's automobile industry. It's the largest auto exporting port in Japan, shipping over one million completed automobiles every year. The Port of Nagoya is a major point of entry to Japan, with connections to about 150 countries around the world.

The Port of Nagoya is a great travel destination. Nagoya is the fourth largest city in Japan with a thriving porcelain industry and textile and lacquer crafts. Both Nagoya Castle and Atsuta Jingu shrine are impressive site for visitors. The Meiji Mura outdoor museum offers buildings characteristic of the Meiji period. And the Ise Grand Shrine near the Port of Nagoya is Japan's premiere Shinto shrine. Many small pearl fishing villages line the Ise Shima National Park that protects scenic coastal areas. The Mikimoto Pearl Island delights tourists with demonstrations of the techniques used in the pearl industry.

2.4 The Threats of Two Ports

At present, the intensive distribution in Asian-Pacific region brings Asian-Pacific region many threats. Ports at home and abroad compete more and more fiercely. There exists some region overlapped among the Shanghai Yangshan port, Fujian port

and Wenzhou port; Pushan port, Tokyo port and Kaohsiung port devote themselves to develop pivotal port of container. All these competition put pressure on Ningbo-Zhoushan port.

In addition, our country has strengthen macroeconomic regulation and control. The system of refunding taxes on exported goods reduces exporters’ positivity. The Ningbo-Zhoushan port, being a kind of world-oriented port, suffers a lot.

In recent years, a scale of international shipping businesses merge frequently, and the trend of manage federalization of shipping enterprises. This contributes the daily decline of ports’ natural monopoly power and their market status.

As for the Port of Nagoya, it is a port located in Japan where the geographical environment is complex and calamitous. Although Japan is a small country geographically, its economy develops fleetly, therefore, ports play a important role in national economic development. There are too many ports in the Asian and Pacific regions, and every port want to canvass cargoes. The competition is increasing.

3. Conclusion

These two ports are located in regions economically developed. They both promising in the future development. The Port of Ningbo-Zhoushan is a multi-functional, integrated modern deep water port. It has many advantages in its location, fairway, coastline and resources. It is a relatively ideal distributing center for exporting containers all over the world. Moreover, it takes part in inland freight transport largely. In recent years, the port of Ningbo-Zhoushan developed rapidly and become one of the most important port around the world. During the new period for the coastal ports’ construction and development in our country, Ningbo port can make

full use of its superiority in location condition, expand its industrial economy near port, and enhance more energy for this port. The cooperation mechanism in Yangtze River delta economic zone, the common development and the preferential policy environment can contribute much to the achievement of its formation of regional international logistics center. As for Nagoya port, studying the development strategies of Nagoya port can further promote the reasonable distribution of resources in Nagoya port, exert the effect of scale economy, form its integral advantages and serve better for economy development. In the whole, the strengths of Ningbo port outweight its weaknesses, its opportunities surpass its threats. The Nagoya port can give priority to the development of container, drive the development of regional economy and promote the development of the Greater Nagoya, Japan, even the international world.
