How to train your dragon by British author Cressida Cowell is one of the best pieces of children’s literature. A child can make a whole alternative universe with a vivid imagination and Toothless, the hero’s hunting dragon, thus turning a rainy day into an adventure of lifetime. However, if you have never read the book but instead choose to see the film version, you might think you were seeing a new-age war movie meant for adults rather than children.

Let’ look at Where the Wild Things Are for further discussion. The story centers around a lovely eight-year-old boy named Max, who sails away to an island. Creatures living there declare Max their king. What an amazing piece of children’s literature! A treasure for every child’s library. Yet, children were crying in the movie theatre. Owls were falling from the sky, chicken’s arms were being

3

torn off, and a child was running around a dark abandoned world fighting evil as the only human. It was almost as if Hollywood could not imagine children enjoying a movie for its basic literature content. Hollywood might be right. But more and more its audiences are complaining that there is an increased amount of violence in children’s stories today than in the past.

While there appears to be a trend in our society to make more violence, more accessible to younger children, books and literature are generally an exception. I truly believe that children’s literature has become more vivid and colorful. This is a great treasure for the children, and is certainly not violent. What has changed the children’s stories of today is not the writers, but the film industry. In some way, children’s literature is just being strangely twisted. I wonder how much influence the author has over this.

21. It can be inferred that the film Where the Wild Things Are is__________. A. moving B. frightening C. interesting D. amazing

22. According to the text, the author thinks that__________.

A. the film industry’s treatment of children’s literature is wrong B. writers should provide more colorful works for children C. there is an increase in violence in children’s literature D. children should read books rather than see films 23. How does the text mainly develop?

A. By inferring B. By giving explanations. C. By providing examples. D. By making comparisons.

Bunny Yeager, a model and photographer, died at 85, her agent, Ed Christin said.

Yeager’s greatest achievement is her cultural impact on making bikinis popular. “Anyone in Miami in the 1950s who wanted a bikini would come to her, and she’d make one,” he said.

Yeager became famous for making women feel comfortable enough to take off clothes. Her photos of Bettie Page in a bathing suit standing next to a real cheetah(猎豹) are still well-known today.

“They all wanted to model for me because they knew that I wouldn’t take advantage of them,” Yeager told The Associated Press during a 2013 interview.

4

In the 1940s, Yeager became one of the most photographed models in Miami during her early career. She later turned the camera on herself, in bathing suits she made for her 5-foot-9 frame by hand. Her self-portraits(自拍照) were turned into a book, How I Photograph Myself, in 1946.

She began taking photos of Page in 1954 as she began her job behind the camera.

She published about a dozen books. And her works have been displayed in art galleries across the world.

Yeager said she had a few requests when several magazines began to struggle or went out of business over the last decade, but her career returned to the public in 2010 when the Warhol Museum in Pittsburgh held an exhibition of her works, followed by another exhibition in Miami in 2013.

In her studio, Yeager kept some photos no one had ever seen in galleries. They will be included in a new book Yeager was finishing, scheduled for publication in September, celebrating the 60th anniversary of Yeager’s first photo shoots with Page, Christin said.

“I’m still feeling like a little child and excited about everything new that comes along in my life,” Yeager said in 2013. “I don’t know where it will lead to yet, but it sounds good to me.”

24. Bunny Yeager was probably born in _______.

A. 1950 B. 1925 C. 1929 D. 1940 25. Bunny Yeager’s photo of Bettie Page were________.

A. considered controversial B. never displayed at all C. not in How I photograph myself D. photographed with a cheetah 26. What is the right order of what Yeager did in her life? ① starting to take photos of Page ② publishing her self-portrait book

③ becoming a most photographed model

A. ①--﹥②--﹥③ B. ①--﹥③--﹥② C. ③--﹥①--﹥② D. ③--﹥②--﹥①

27. According to the passage, Bunny Yeager was________.

A. devoted and productive B. serious and interesting C. popular but unhappy D. honest and punctual

Many people rush into the commitment of bringing home a four-legged family member, only to find out that they are not ready for a pet. This often results in the dog being turned over to a shelter where it may not find another home. This can be avoided if potential pet owners take the time to figure out if they are truly ready for the responsibilities of pet ownership.

Being a responsible pet owner involves a financial commitment that goes beyond buying dog food. There are also parasite (寄生虫) prevention, boarding costs while traveling and the cost to care for the pet should it become ill or injured. That is not to say that one must be rich in order to have a dog, but it is important to be prepared for the expenses that come with being a pet owner.

Another consideration is the time commitment. An owner away from home for 14 hours every day is not an ideal situation for a dog. A potential dog owner must also consider the time it takes to care for his or her pet, the time it takes to feed, walk, play with, bathe and clean up. Also, dogs require attention. Be prepared to spend time each day petting and playing with it.

Dogs are dogs, and will act like dogs. This includes barking, digging, having accidents in the house and, possibly, destroying some of the owner’s prized possessions, such as furniture, shoes and cell phones. If the above would cause an owner to want to get rid of the dog, then he or she is not yet ready to be a pet owner. Many wonderful pets end up in shelters simply because they acted like dogs!

28. Who might be qualified to be a dog owner, according to the text? A. Kari, a teacher who works eight hours a day. B. Jim, who has a daughter sensitive to dog’s smell. C. Dick, a jobless teenager who can hardly pay his rent. D. Steven, a business man who travels a lot on business.

29. To be a responsible dog owner you need to do all the following EXCEPT _________.

A. buying dog food and feeding it

B. taking it to hospital when necessary C. spending time each day playing with it

D. finding a shelter for it when you are bored with it

30. What does the underlined part in the first paragraph probably mean? A. Rush to adopt a dog formally.

6

B. Commit to buy a dog and take it home.

C. Run into a pet shelter and take one home so quickly.

D. Decide to be a pet owner without thinking about it carefully. 31. What might be the best title for the text?

A. Dogs Are Dogs B. Ready for a Pet?

C. Have Time for a Dog? D. Pets Are Family Members

D

The current Ebola (埃博拉病毒) outbreak in western and central Africa has infected at least 3,069 people, including 1,552 dead, making it the largest outbreak in history. Ebola is a deadly virus —about 60 percent of people infected with it have died.

How is Ebola doing its harm?

When a person becomes infected with Ebola, the virus damages the body’s immune (免疫的) cells, which defend against infection, said a researcher at Lancaster University. But if a person’s immune system can stand up to this attack, then he is more likely to survive the disease.

The patients that survive it best are those who don’t get such a bad disadvantage in immune system. But if the body isn’t able to get rid of this attack, then the immune system becomes less able to regulate (调节) itself. This means the immune system is more likely to run out of control, leading to a drop in blood pressure, multi-organ failure and eventually death. What are the common symptoms of the disease?

Fever. Headache. Joint and muscle aches. Weakness. Diarrhea. Vomiting. Stomach pain. Lack of appetite. Chills. Rash. Redness in the eyes. Hiccups. Cough. Sore throat. Chest pain. Difficult breathing or swallowing. Bleeding inside and outside of the body.

How to prevent the spread of Ebola?

Ebola can be spread primarily via direct contact with patients, specifically the blood and fluids of an infected patient.

We should avoid contact with infected patients and objects such as clothing, bedding, and needles used by them. Avoid areas where infections have been reported. For now, the disease has only been confirmed in central and West Africa, four cases in America and Europe. Avoid eating wild-caught bush meat. Researchers have suspected that the disease came to humans via animals,

7

probably through the meat of primates(灵长类). If you’re in an area where the disease has been reported, avoid purchasing, eating, or handling wild game to stay on the safe side.

Wear protective medical clothing if you’re around infected patients. Extreme caution is necessary. Hospital workers must use masks, gloves, goggles, and gowns, which needed to be worn at all times if you’re around infected patients. How Do People Survive Ebola?

Doctors don’t know for certain who will survive Ebola, and there is no specific treatment or cure for the disease. Although in the minority, some people do recover from infection. Our suggestions include:

Maintain your electrolytes (电解质) and body liquid. Sports drinks can be used. Monitor your blood pressure and control it if necessary. Dropping blood pressure may be a serious sign of infection. Breathe in an oxygen-rich environment. Quickly address any symptoms of infection. Be honest about when and where you’re feeling pain.

32. Ebola causes the death of a human being by ________.

A. attacking him with high fever B. regulating his immune system C. damaging his immune cells D. harming all his organs directly 33. What is NOT mentioned as the symptom of Ebola? A. Fever and chills. B. Swallowing difficulty. C. Loss of blood. D. High blood pressure.

34. In order not to be infected by Ebola, we should _________. A. have the clothing of the infected cleaned B. avoid eating wild animals like monkeys C. not travel to Africa, America or Europe D. stay at home without going anywhere 35. It is true that ________.

A. a certain number of people survive Ebola B. human has found a special cure for Ebola C. oxygen can save infected people’s lives D. low blood pressure is surely caused by Ebola

第二节(共5小题;每小题2分,满分10分)

根据短文内容,从短文后的选项中选出能填入空白处的最佳选项。选项

中有两项为多余选项。(注意:E=AB;F=AC;G=AD)

I was born in a poor family. 36 It forces me to be outdoors more, come up with ways to entertain myself, and appreciate the things I have in life. The following are some lessons I pick up from my mom and dad who have taught me that money isn’t everything.

It doesn’t have to be new to be good. My mom is the queen of garage sales and resale shops. 37 From books and clothing to furniture and cars, my parents have showed me that used things are often good things. My parents have formed a deep-rooted belief in me that what is one person’s junk can indeed be another person’s treasure.

38 Some of the best memories I have as a child growing up are those that take place in nature. Everything from caving and camping with my dad to hiking in the hills with my mom has taught me that outdoor activities can be a ton of fun but don’t have to cost much money.

It’s amazing what you can do to replace what you don’t have. We live in an old schoolhouse where we have no heat during the winter. 39 We have no television, but we would draw pictures and play games at night. You would think such conditions would have made for a terrible childhood, but in fact the opposite is true.

It’s not how much you spend but with whom you spend it. I have great times playing with my brothers. And every day, all of the family members would sit together to have breakfast. 40 Such quality time costs nothing but makes me happy.

A.All this doesn’t matter though. B.My dad is a true “American picker”.

C.Outdoor activities can be fun and cheap.

D.Money can go a long way towards helping people be happy. E.We would heat the house with a wood-burning stove instead. F.Sometimes I think I am actually lucky not to have a lot as a child.

G.Each Sunday my parents and I would go to eat dinner at my grandparents’

house.

52.选A。考查不定代词。由前句的puzzling可知作者和朋友对此毫不知情。have nothing to do with为固定短语,意为“与??无关”。

53.选B。考查动词。由下文的paid the bill and left可知作者与朋友已喝完咖啡,故选B。

56.选A。

A piece of paper on the wall saying “A Cup of Coffee”.可知此处为wall。

59.选D。考查名词。根据and平行结构前后感情色彩相似,再由空后的dignity“尊严”可知,此处优选respect“尊重”。wisdom意为“睿智”。

60.选B。考查动词短语。由上文He put up a piece of paper on the wall.以及后文threw it into the dustbin可知,此处意为“取下”,故选take off。bring down 意为“降低”;keep away意为“避开”;cut off意为“切断”。 第二节 语法填空

I’m totally free this weekend and glad to do you a favor. Tom is a clever and outgoing boy, and I always love to play with him. I plan to arrive at your house at 8 o’clock in the morning and take him out to do some exercise in the nearby park, which is really good for his health. When I chatted with Tom a few days ago, he showed a special preference for Chinese food. I know a great Chinese restaurant in our neighborhood. Tom will be delighted if I invite him to try some delicious food there. After lunch, we’ll have a short break and then I will play games with him. Don’t worry about him. I think we will get along well with each other. I hope you will have a good time on Saturday.

Li Hua 录音文本 (Text 1)

M: Here are two packages for you from New York. Could you please sign your name here? W: Sure. Thanks. (Text 2)

W: Look how thin the mommy is—and she had a baby only six months old.

M: Yeah, my wife gets really depressed when she sees moms like that. She had our daughter two years ago and she still can't lose weight. (Text 3)

W: I wanted to go to Spain in August but it's so expensive.

M: Well, summer is peak season, so it's the most expensive time. Why not go later in the year? (Text 4)

W: I'm hungry. Shall we go for a bite to eat? M: Sounds good.

W: And then how about going to see the new film? M: It's wonderful. (Text 5)

W: Yesterday’s lecture was excellent, right?

M: The topic was interesting, but the lecture was much more difficult, and I couldn’t follow it completely. (Text 6)

W: Oh, no! Not again! This happens every day. M: What’s wrong?

W: Look at the mess, Jim! You have your supper and never do the washing-up afterwards. M: I don’t do the washing-up but I wash the car every week. W: I don’t care about that. You never help me with the housework! M: That’s not true, darling. I prepare your meals, right?

W: Oh! So what? The kitchen’s always a mess afterwards. You cook meals and I do the rest every day.

17

M: Calm down. OK, I will do everything in our house from next weekend. (Text 7)

M: I'd like to rent a bike for a day. How much does it cost?

W: It's 20 dollars a day. A day is from 9:00 in the morning until 7:00 in the evening. M: So, if I brought the bike back at 7:30, would I have to pay for an extra day?

W: Yes, and there's a deposit to pay as well. It's 50 dollars. Then when you bring the bike back, we'll give you back the 50 dollars. But if you didn't bring the bike back before 7:00 pm, we'd keep the money, of course.

M: Well, you don't need to worry. I'll surely bring the bike back at 5:00. Do you have helmets, by the way?

W: Of course. It's free to rent a helmet. Let's go and choose a bike and a helmet for you. (Text 8)

M: Hi, Tracy. You’re getting ready for tomorrow’s lessons, aren’t you?

W: Oh, yes, but I’m a bit nervous. I don’t know what will happen in class or how I’ll get along with my new classmates…

M: I can understand. Just take it easy. You’ll make a lot of new friends very soon.

W: Thank you. I’ll try my best to get used to my new school life as soon as possible. By the way, what time does the first class begin?

M: At 8 o’clock. But before that we have 10 minutes to hand in homework and then 20 minutes for morning reading.

W: So we must get to school before 7:30, right? M: Right.

W: And how long does each class last? M: 45 minutes, with a 10-minute break.

W: Well, I hear that lunchtime is nearly 12 o’clock and I think I’ll be starving by then. M: Don’t worry. There’s a 30-minute break after the second class, so we can buy something to eat. Or you may take some cookies and fruits to school. W: That’s good. (Text 9)

W: Darling, I’m going to stop by Bergner’s first. It’s got some quality stuff. Who knows, some of their dresses might be on sale. M: Bergner’s?

W: It’s a fairly well-known store like Penny’s. I need to get something for Lisa’s birthday. She’s into name brands. Any suggestions?

M: A Gucci handbag or Calvin Klein T-shirt might be nice. Oh, I have a 15% discount card for

18

Penny’s. Let’s go ahead and use it. Here it is.

W: It’s wonderful. We can save some money for our home. Oh, no! I was supposed to give Helen a call an hour ago. It’s already a quarter to five. I left my phone with her. She must be still waiting for my call. M: Use my phone, Darling.

W: OK. Is my telephone number 61199621?

M: Oh, my god. You still don’t remember it. It’s 61299621. Only the last number is different from mine. Mine is 2.

W: Don’t blame me. I have changed it for only three days. M: OK. You should write it down on your notebook. (Text 10)

Hello. My name’s John Williams. I’m an English teacher. And I have started a website to help you improve English listening and speaking skills as quickly as possible. My online English lessons take just 5 to 10 minutes each day to complete. And there are no advertisements to take your attention away. You can also download the sound files to your computer and exercise them and take your lessons again anytime. I’ve designed the online English course to be a very easy, cheap and quick way to improve your English speaking, listening and conversation skills. And also to improve your listening scores in English exams. Every day, you’ll learn some new English vocabulary, idioms and phrasal verbs. And you’ll feel more confident in working and making friends in English. You’ll also learn correct English pronunciation. I always make sure my online English lessons are short, interesting and easy to remember. My idea of learning English is that it is best for you to learn a little each day and remember it clearly. This idea doesn’t mean a new method, but instead it is a concept. I hope you can accept. Whether you’re taking other English classes or not, and no matter what method you use, I can help you to achieve your English learning goals.
