Part B Tapescript: W: Good morning, Dr. Brown. M: Good morning, Mary. W: You know what? I went to your lecture yesterday. M: How did you like it? W: It was really great. I learned a lot. M: Thank you. It’s part of the book that I’m going to publish. W: Can you tell me something more? M: It’s about silk history on production, culture, trade and so on. W: I’m looking forward to having a copy. M: Hopefully, it will be published in October.

三问部分:

Question 1: When did you start to have interest in silk history?/ When did you start to take interest in silk history?/ When did you begin to be interested in silk history?

Answer 1: It was in 2002 when I first came to China for a conference as a historian. I happened to attend a

lecture about silk history. I learned the history about a lady in ancient China who devoted herself to silk production. I was deeply impressed. Then I began to focus on silk history and development.

Question 2: How did Chinese silk spread to other countries?

Answer 2: Well, the silk trade began in the early years of the 2nd century BC. A trade route linked to China was

the outside world. Silk was transported from China to Italy and some other European countries. But silk production had remained a secret for about 3000 years. In about 300 AD, a group of Japanese obtained silkworms, and they also took four Chinese girls back to Japan to teach how to produce silk.

Question 3: What is the present situation of silk industry?/ What is the current situation of silk industry?

Answer 3: The silk industry has been affected by man-made fibers, which are produced at lower cost and are

generally stronger. Silk still ranks first in the high quality clothing market, though it has been largely replaced.

Part C Tapescript: The Worth of Honesty Mary was a young painter. Recently, she was short of money, so she decided to sell some of her paintings. Tom, a rich man, who was particularly fond of Mary’s paintings heard about this. One day, Tom asked Mary to sell him one of her paintings. Mary asked for $500 for the painting that Tom chose. Tom thought it was a fair price and agreed. He quickly wrote out a check, put it into an envelope and gave the envelope to Mary. Later that day, Mary went to a local bank. She handed in the envelope to a clerk. The clerk opened it, read the check, and told Mary that it was $5000. Mary was surprised at the large amount of money and thought that Tom must have made a mistake. So she hurried back to Tom and told him about the mistake. Hearing this, Tom had a look at the check and thought for a while. Then he replied with a smile, “Yes, I did make a mistake. I wrote 5000 instead of 500. But please accept the $5000 because your honesty is worth far more than that.” 参考复述:

There was a young painter named Mary who needed to make some money. She put some of her paintings up for sale, and Tom, a wealthy man, heard about it. He liked her work, so he came to buy a painting. He picked one, and Mary asked for $500. Tom agreed and wrote her a check. But when Mary went to the bank, she was surprised to find that the check was actually for $5000. She thought there must have been a mistake, so she went to Tom and told him what she had found. Tom smiled, and told her that he had indeed made a mistake. He’d written 5000, instead of 500. But he told Mary to just take the $5000, since her honesty was worth much more than that.
