Part II Reading Comprehension (30 points)

Directions: This part is to test your reading ability. There are 3 passages altogether. After reading them, please make the correct choice. Passage 1

Every nation has a set of rules, either written or unwritten, which determines how people act with each other. Formal written rules are often laws, and they control how we drive, operate a business, or run a government. Individuals who disobey laws may be fined or put in jail. Because illegal behavior generally harms other individuals or society at large, our court system must punish people who disregard these formal rules.

Informal rules often called “manners”, describe correct and incorrect behavior in such situations as eating in a restaurant, going on a date, or working in an office. If one is impolite or misbehaves in these situations, other people often consider offender insensitive. And although we can strongly disagree to such misconduct, we can not legally punish someone for simply being inconsiderate or unpleasant.

Neither laws nor manners are inflexible; both change as society develops. For example, in the early twentieth century, the selling of strong spirits was forbidden. This law however had to be changed because the government found it impossible to force people to drink only soft drinks. More recently, many people who were dissatisfied with the unequal between the rights of men and women worked to pass the Equal Rights Law. As women became more independent and took on new roles, a new law was considered necessary to reflect that change. 26. What is the passage mainly about?

A. Laws of a society B. Social manners

C. Rules of a society D. The reason for people to change their laws 27. According to the passage, laws and manners _______. A. can change our society B. are not inflexible

D. The third paragraph mainly explains why both laws and manners have to be changed with the development of the society. 29. What is implied in the passage?

A. In the early twentieth century, the selling of strong spirits was forbidden. B. Laws are formal written rules.

C. Only those whose illegal behavior harms other people or the society will be legally punished.

D. We can also legally punish someone for simply being inconsiderate or unpleasant.

30. What is closest in meaning to the underlined word “disregard”(para1.)? A. disguise B. disagree C. discard D. disobey

Passage 2

It is quite clear that sleeping is necessary to everyone. If we don’t get enough sleep, we will feel tired.

Generally, we have two kinds of sleep: active sleep and passive sleep. The passive sleep gives us the rest our bodies need, and prepare us for active sleep, in which dreaming appears. In passive sleep, the body is at relaxation. The heart slows down. We move little. And the brain becomes very inactive. If a person continues to sleep, the brain temperature rises, the amount of blood in the brain increases, the body becomes very, very still, and the brain goes from being inactive to being active. And as the brain becomes more active the eyes begin to move rapidly. When the eyes begin to move, this is a sign of another change------- the change is that the person is dreaming.

Throughout the night a person usually dreams for about one and a half hours. Many people say that they don’t dream or that they rarely dream. Doctors have studied the sleep and have found that everyone dreams------in fact, every person needs to dream in order to keep healthy. It appears that we need passive sleep in order to rest our bodies and need active sleep in order to rest our brains. 31. Sleep is necessary to everyone because_______. A. our brains cannot work without it B. our bodies need it

C. it is of great importance to our health D. it is of great importance to our minds

32. According to the passage, we know that dreaming appears in _______. A. our inactive sleep B. our active sleep C. our passive sleep D. our health sleep

34. Which of the following statement is true about the state of passive sleep? A. His body moves a little and his brain becomes active B. His heart beats slowly but his body moves a lot

C. His heart beats slowly and his brain becomes very calm D. His brain becomes inactive and his heart beats fast 35. It can be inferred from the passage that______.

A. those people who dream a lot in their sleep can never keep healthy B. both active sleep and passive sleep are important to our health C. only passive sleep is necessary to every one of us

D. a person needs only one and a half hours’ sleep everyday
