There are some great differences between the traditional family and the modern family. The first important difference is in the man’s role. The traditional husband was the head of the household because he was the only one who worked outside the home.If the wife worked for money, then the husband was not considered to be a good provider,In many families today, both husband and wife work for money. Therefore, they share the role of head of household. In

addition, the traditional husband usually made big decisions about spending money. However, the modern husband shares these decisions with his working wife. Also, the traditional husband did not help his wife with housework or meal preparation. Dinner was ready when he came home,In contrast, the modern husband helps his working wife at home.He may do some of the household chores, and it is not unusual for him to cook.

The second difference is in the woman’s role. In the traditional family, the woman may have worked for miney during her first years of marriage. However, when she gave birth, she would usually give up her job. Her primary role would be to take care of her family and home.In

contrast,in many families today, the modern woman works outside the home even after she has children .She’s doing two jobs instead of one,so she is busier than the traditional mother was.The traditional wife learned to live within her husband’s income. But the modern wife does not have to because the family has two incomes.

The final difference is in the role of the children .In the traditional family, the children were taken care of by the mother because she didn’t work outside. However, today pre-school children may go to a child-care center or to a baby-sitter regularly because the mother works. The school-age children of a traditional family were more dependent.Their mother was there to help them get ready for school and to make their breakfast. In conrtast, modern children are more

independent. They have to get up early and get ready for school themselves, and they may even have to make their own breakfast. 3.The main idea of the passage is . A.the change of the American society B.the change of the American children C.the change of the American family D.the change of the American adults

D.no longer works for money because the wife is working 6.According to the passage, which of the following is true?

A.The husband in the modern family does a lot of housework except cooking.

“The Lord of the Rings”, one of the best sellers in the new millennium (千年), was made up of three parts —— “The Fellowship of the Ring”, “Two Towers”, and “The Return of the King”. Millions upon millions of people have read it in over 25 different languages, but fewer know about the author and the history of the composition of the creative masterwork.

John Ronald Reuel Tolkien was born in South Africa in 1892. His parents died when he was a child. Living in England with his aunt, Tolkien and his cousins made up play languages, a hobby that led to Tolkien’s becoming skilled in Welsh, Greek, Gothic, Old Norse and Anglo-Saxon.

After graduating from Oxford, Tolkien served in World War I. In 1917, while recovering from trench fever, he began composing the mythology (神话) for The Rings. As a professor of Anglo-Saxon in 1930s at Oxford, Tolkien was part of an informal discussion group called the Inklings, which included several writers. The group was soon listening to chapters of Tolkien’s imaginative work “The Hobbit”.

Hobbit was a name Tolkien created for a local people that could best be described as half-sized members of the English rural (乡村的) class. Hobbits live in hillside holes. One of them, Bilbo Baggins, looks for treasures with a group of dwarves (侏儒). On the way, he meets the twisted, pitiful creature Gollum, from whom he sees a golden ring that makes the holder invisible. One of Tolkien’s students persuaded her employer, publisher Allen & Unwin, to look at a draft (草稿). The chairman of the firm, Stanley Unwin, thought that the best judge for a children’s book would be his ten-year-old son. The boy earned a shilling for reporting back that the adventure was exciting, and “The Hobbit” was published in 1937.

It sold so well that Unwin asked for a continuation. Over a dozen years later, in 1954, Tolkien produced “The Lord of the Rings”, a series of books so creative that they hold readers — new and old — after their publication. 57. What can we learn from the text?

A. “The Lord of the Rings” didn’t sell well in the last millennium. B. People know better about Tolkien himself than about his works. C. Tolkien was quite familiar with Old English.

D. Tolkien knew very well about different kinds of local languages in Africa. 58. Which of the following helped most in making “The Hobbit” published? A. One of Tolkien’s students. B. Stanley Unwin’s son. C. Allen & Unwin. D. Bilbo Baggins. 59. What is mainly discussed in the text? A. “The Lord of the Rings” and its writer.

B. A completely new masterwork in the new millennium.

C. A famous professor at Oxford University. D. The power of the magic ring.

60. Which of the following shows the right order of Mr. J.R.R.Tolkien’s life experience? a. He had his “The Hobbit” published. b. He became a member of the Inklings. c. He served in World WarⅠ d. He became an undergraduate at Oxford. e. His work “The Lord of the Rings” came to the world. f. He moved to England to live with his aunt. Beijing had its biggest snowfall since 1951. Britain is suffering through its longest cold snap (寒潮) since 1981. And freezing weather is hitting the Deep South, including Florida’s orange groves and beaches.

Whatever happened to global warming?

Such weather doesn’t seem to fit with warnings from scientists that the Earth is warming because of greenhouse gases. But experts say the cold snap doesn’t contradict global warming at all—it’s just a temporary phenomenon in the long-term heating trend. “It’s part of natural variability,” said Gerald Meehl, a senior scientist. With global warming, he said, “we’ll still have record cold temperatures. We’ll just have fewer of them.”

Scientists say man-made climate change does have the potential to cause more frequent and more severe weather extremes. But experts did not connect the current cold snap to climate change. So what is going on?

“We basically have seen just a big outbreak of Arctic air over populated areas of the Northern Hemisphere”, Arndt said.

In the atmosphere, large rivers of air travel roughly west to east around the globe between the Arctic and the tropics. This air flow acts like a fence to keep Arctic air restricted. But recently, this air flow has become bent into a zigzag (之字形) pattern, wandering north and south. If you live in a place where it brings air up from the south, you get warm weather. In fact, record highs were reported this week in Washington state and Alaska.

But in the eastern United States, like some other unlucky parts of the globe, Arctic air is coming from the north. And that’s how you get a temperature of 3 degrees in Beijing, a reading of minus-42 in mainland Norway, and 18 inches of snow in parts of Britain. The zigzag pattern arises naturally from time to time, but it is not clear why it’s so strong right now. 8.What is the best title of the text?

A.Freezing weather is hitting the Deep South. B.We’ll still have record cold temperatures. C.The air flow has become a zigzag pattern. D.Cold snap doesn’t contradict global warming. 9.With global warming, we will ______. A.also meet with severe cold snap B.have more hot temperatures forever C.never experience cold temperatures D.have more cold temperatures

10.According to experts, the current cold snap ______. A.suggests that the climate has changed greatly B.is not related to the climate change C.shows that the climate will turn cold D.is affected by global warming

11.Beijing had its biggest snowfall since 1951 because of ______. A.a fence from the Arctic C.a big outbreak of Arctic air 12.We can conclude that ______.

A.not all the parts of the Northern Hemisphere are cold in face of the cold snap B.the zigzag pattern arises naturally accidentally C.Beijing will get cold weather next year

D.Washington state and Alaska will not face cold weather next year 【答案】 8.D

B.a cooling trend in climate D.its large population

I was 18 when Tim and I began to date. Shy and quiet, I’d met his parents once before but hadn’t ventured to say more than “ Hello”. This particular evening, however, we were taking them out to dinner for their anniversary and I wanted to make a good impression.

Tim and his parents arrived and I was out the door in a flash. My good impression began with “ punctual”. I sat in the backseat beside Tim nervously watching his father’s eyes glance into the rearview mirror to examine me.

Tim and his parents had already decided on their favorite Mexican restaurant and that was fine with me; the dim lighting would hide the rising flush of my cheeks, and if anyone noticed, I could blame it on the peppers. With proper table manners I managed to survive halfway through dinner without making any unforgivable mistakes. However, in the midst of conversation I reached for my iced tea, raised the glass to my lips and very quickly discovered I had picked up the wrong glass. I quickly lowered the glass and set it back but it was too late; I had burnt my eyebrows, the hair in my nose, and curl over my forehead! I looked up slowly, praying no one had seen me, but all eyes at the table had seen and each face stared at me in shocked silence. Excusing myself, I ran to the restroom.

I would have hidden there forever but I’d barely gotten in the door when Tim’s mother arrived. “ Ah, honey,” she said, holding out her arms to me. “ Everything will be just fine.”

Tim and I eventually married. We had a small ceremony and a family reception afterwards held at the very restaurant where this incident occurred. This time, however, I didn’t drink any candles… only a Margarita(一种鸡尾酒名); they were served in different glasses. 13.It can be inferred from the passage that___________.

A.the author had never met her parents-in-law before dinning together B.Tim and the author took the bus to get to the restaurant C.Tim’s father was curious to know about the author

D.Tim’s mother was not satisfied with the author’s behavior 14.According to the passage, the author______________. A.felt very sorry for being late meeting Tim’s parents B.mistook wine for drinks and got drunk

C.had her eyebrows burnt because of her nervousness D.left a bad impression on Tim’s parents 15.What would be the best title of the passage?

A.Please Don’t Drink the Candles B.Please Don’t Light the Candles C.Please Behave Yourself

D.You Can Never Make a First Impression for a Second Time
