Prana was a beautiful dog, whose name means “breath of life”. Although he died several years ago, I can still remember the days we spent together and what he has taught me about love.

I have two apple trees in the garden. Prana loved apples. When he went outside, he d catch an apple and take it into the house to eat later. The apples had been on the ground and were often

dirty so I wasn t always happy that Prana had brought them into the house.

It was an autumn day in America, but it was very cold. A big snow fell and we had not done anything for its coming. On that special day, Prana went outside and I watched him through the window. I noticed that he was madly digging(挖) holes and bringing the apples to the ground so they could be seen above the snow. I did not know why he was doing this. He seemed to want to do something special.

When I called him back, he had his usual one apple in his mouth. About five minutes later, I looked outside. The garden was completely covered with birds. Prana had dug up all those apples for his bird friends to eat. He knew that they wouldn t have stored enough food for the coming winter!

February has long been a month of romance. With the sweet smell of roses in the air, romantic films hit cinemas and love stories fill newspapers and magazines.

On the 14th day, it is a custom for a boy to take his girlfriend out to dinner, buy her flowers and chocolates, write poems, sing to her or even spell out her name with rose petals! This is what you see on Valentine s Day, a day named after Valentine who was a priest in the third century Rome. When the emperor (皇帝) decided that single men could become better soldiers than those with wives, he didn t allow marriage.

But Valentine continued to perform marriage ceremonies for young lovers in secret. When his actions were discovered, the emperor sentenced him to death. While in prison, it is said that Valentine fell in love with the daughter of his prison guard. Before his death, he wrote her a letter, which he signed “From your Valentine”, an expression that is still in use today. Valentine died for what he believed in and so he was made a Saint (圣徒), as well as becoming one of history s most romantic characters.

Nowadays, Valentine s Day is also popular among Chinese young people. Some students are planning to make Valentine s cards for parents, teachers and friends. Others want to hold parties at which they will exchange small gifts and eat heart-shaped cakes. The idea is to have fun and encourage people to share in the spirit of St. Valentine.

Sunny

Nowadays they are giving homework even during the holidays and I hate that very much. But I think there is a reason for it. Homework is given so that we can remember whatever we have learnt. Regular drilling and repetition make perfect. But teachers have started to give too much homework. Anything in excess (过度) is bad. So homework should be given with the idea of giving students a practice and not to overwork them.

Jane

What s the use of just homework without allowing children to get an insight (洞察) into the subject? It just makes them bookworms but nothing else. Home-work such as writing some things 5 times at home will just make them memorize things but not put them into use. I regret to say that teachers find it easy to bundle (归拢) the children with homework rather than making them get interested to understand what they learn. The same trend continues even in college. I find that most of the so-called high scorers are unable to answer simple things in an interview.

Sally

It is OK to give homework. But it should be given less. We are spending most of our time in school and at least we must be free in our home. If you give home-work, we will be very tired and we wouldn t be able to pay attention to extra-curricular activities, which in turn may affect our physical and mental health. So please give less homework to us.

Johnson

It is part of our work to give students homework. There will be some punishments if we won t do our work. So I have to do that though I know such a teacher is not liked by students.

64. Who thinks that too much homework may do harm to students physical and mental health?

A. Sunny. B. Jane. C. Sally. D. Johnson.

65. Who thinks homework should help students learn something practical?

A. Sunny. B. Jane. C. Sally. D. Johnson.

66. According to the last paragraph, why do teachers give students homework?

A. Because they care more about students metal health.

B. Because they find it easy to control students in this way.

C. Because they will be punished if they don t give homework.

D. Because they want students to get interested in their studies.

67. What problem do the speakers talk about?

A. Whether students should be punished without doing homework.

B. What kind of homework should be given to students.

C. What role homework plays in helping students to learn.

D. Whether teachers should give homework to students.

Rock and roll music developed in the United States in the early nineteen-fifties. It was based on the music called rhythm and blues that was performed by African American musicians.

Early rock and roll singers developed their own kinds of music. Elvis Presley, Chuck Berry, the Beach Boys, and Bob Dylan were the most popular rock and roll musicians in the early 1960 s. All were American. Then, in 1964, a new rock and roll group from England invaded America: the Beatles.

Some people say the Beatles music shook America like an earthquake. The Beatles changed rock and roll forever. Their early songs were influenced by American rock and roll musicians, including Chuck Berry. But the Beatles looked different and sounded different from any musical group be-fore them.

The Beatles released their first album in the United States in 1964, when all of the top five records in America were by the Beatles. In 1967, they released an album called “Sergeant Pepper s Lonely Hearts Club Band.” It was one of the first “concept” albums. That is, all the songs were linked by a common story or idea.

The popularity of the Beatles led the way for more rock and roll bands from England to become popular in America. The Rolling Stones was the most important of these bands. The Rolling Stones is one of the few groups from the 1960 s that is still performing and recording today. In 1965, the group recorded one of its most famous songs, “Satisfaction”.

The musical instrument most linked to rock and roll is the guitar. Experts say Jimi Hendrix was one of the most influential guitar players in rock and roll during the late 1960 s. His “Purple Haze” was liked by many people.

By the 1970 s, rock and roll music became known as rock music. It expanded into many new forms. For example, there was country rock, hard rock, acid rock, and heavy metal rock. Punk rock, jazz rock, and glitter rock.

In the middle 1970 s, experts say rock music regained some of the energy of early rock and roll. Bruce Springsteen and the E Street Band became popular with their album “Born to Run”. Springsteen s music was like the lively rock and roll music of the early nineteen-sixties. Many of his songs were about social issues. He sang about the effects of unemployment and the war in Vietnam.

A huge market is preparing itself for a new technical revolution — “e-paper”.

What if, tomorrow, with text shown on plastic-coated paper, we would turn the pages nearly with a click, and words and pictures would come to life? OK — tomorrow, it probably won t happen, but why not the day after tomorrow? For Bruno Rives, founder of Tebaldo, a company connected in new technological trends (趋势) and usages, there is no doubt that “now in Year Zero of electronic paper.”

The idea appeared several decades ago. But it has now reached its “technological maturity (成熟)”, according to Jacques Angelé, director of technological programmes for Nemoptic, a French company which is in the lead of e-paper development. “This new paper weighs 150 to 200 grams, is 5mm thick, and 7 to 8 inches diagonal (对角线) . It must be simple to use and be always updated; after several unsuccessful attempts, the e-paper is now ready.”

“It s a new opportunity for the press!” cheers Rives, who personally worked on this project. “It s a chance to at-tract readers who don t usually read the papers, and recon-quer those who have turned to the Internet. The money we will spend is not so big if we consider what s involved (涉及)!”

As for us, we will have to get used to a new object. Though a page in black and white doesn t shock us if we think of it like a pocket book, it may seem serious for other uses. Will it be long until it hits color or video, and will it be long before we get a foldable (可折叠的) electronic page? Maybe the technological attraction will make us forget the grainy texture of paper between our fingers. In fact, and even Rives agrees, it is not an easy task. He reminds us, “Paper did not explode in 321 BC, and we had to wait until the 1500s.”

D. papers of e-paper will have a chance to win over the Internet

74. From the passage, we can learn that the e-paper looks like _______.

A. a plastic coat B. a common newspaper

C. a pocket book D. a note computer

75. From the last paragraph, we can infer that _______.

A. the color on e-paper can t last long

B. e-paper still can t be folded

C. paper was made 1,500 years ago
