Review on “Matchstick Men”

In USA, people will be called Matchstick Man if he or she can always deceive others to give their money on their own and the victims even don’t realize being cheated. At the first sight, I think this film may talks about something funny or comical. However, it raises other problems about some ones’ job and private lives, and how to face with the setbacks in our lives.

In this film, Roy, who is played by Nicolas Cage, is one of the Matchstick Men. On the other hand, he doesn’t let him out of greed of weakness and he never uses violence. So, in his own words, he always treats himself as a con artist, not a con.

Undoubtedly, Roy is a first-class con. Cooperating with his partner Frank, who is played by Sam Rockwell, Roy tells some victims that they are guaranteed winner of one of three fabulous prizes and how to evade tax by buying a water filtration system. Of course, there is no water filtration system. Simple is safe, said Roy, so they can always avoid the supervision system. After many years, he obtains more than $1000000.

However, Roy can’t enjoy his life. In other words, this experience brings more suffering than happiness into his life. He suffers from obsessive-compulsive disorder, panic-attack and cleanliness. He can’t endure dirt, especially around moldings. He might be hysterical or difficult-breathing if people don’t take off their shoes or throw rubbish on his carpet. Besides, he also won’t to be out, which should be called ’Agoraphobia ’.

So his job has a great influence on his private life. He lost his wife and all chance to be a happy man. All his life seems to rely on a little pill. In fact, it is a psychological problem. All these make him a loner. At this time, I always wonder whether job should be more important than family or not. Maybe being a con is not a good example here, but it should be a good lesson for us to pay more attention on job-select in two years later.

Ok, let’s return to the film.

In this film, there are two turns in Roy’s life. The first one is the appearing of his daughter, Angela (In fact, Angela is a con too). At first, that leads Roy’s static but ordered life to be disordered. Then, with the help of his psychological doctor, he tries to accept Angela, be a father and enjoy the happiness. He even decides to stop do what he do for a living and be a good father only.

To our surprise, the second turn comes to being and makes all his dream vanished. All these begin with a victim Chuck, but the worse fact is that Frank and Angela have planned to cheat him. This time, the great con artist is conned by the closest persons. Maybe, it goes as what Roy said:’ Crime must be paid, it is only just not very well ’. However, what Roy paid are not only all of his wealth but also his sadly life being a con. He gets rid of the pain of the old life successfully and goes out of the door to enjoy the sunshine eventually.

I must say Roy is lucky. He doesn’t become upset nor does some extreme things when faced with these facts. There is much unhappiness or sadness in our daily lives, the

different attitudes we choose toward often result in vary endings. Be more optimistic like Roy, things may become more acceptable and our lives may be better.
